Published by JohnWillard Utuk (A0.1257964). The High Priestess is a chamber work for mixed instrumentation, including an F Horn with piano, violin, and flute. This piece is inspired by the artwork of the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck, specifically the less credited illustrator of the world famous deck, Pamela Colman Smith. The music represents the symbolism and feeling behind the High Priestess card, with keywords of strength, adaptability, seriousness, intuition, loving understanding, knowledge, introspection, and self-trust. Each instrument is featured throughout, as the main melody and distinct rhythms are traded and dovetailed around the ensemble. The piece begins with a feeling of watery calm (e.g. Venetian Boat songs), ascends to a hopeful journey, moves through tense trials, then returning back to the distant flute melody, followed by a piano “solo†that ultimately inspired this chamber work in the first place. This work is great for high school, collegiate, amateur, or professional ensembles, as well as very advanced young chamber players looking for something new and fresh. Rhythms are simple, while expression and musicality can be explored. In performance, be mindful of balance issues, so seating arrangement can be adjusted. I recommend the horn player be seated on the outside, so as not to cover up the flute. Average performance time: ca. 4:30Other instrumentations are in progress, so please check back for updated editions. The original instrumentation involved the oboe and cello. Nebraska, My Heartland incorporates the poetry of both Willa Cather, the famous Nebraskan poet and writer who helped the rest of America gain an appreciation for the pioneer life, and Veronica Torraca-Bragdon, a contemporary poet and friend whose heart will always belong to Nebraska. Cather’s poem, Prairie Spring was chosen because it vividly portrays the struggles of the pioneers who originally settled here, yet juxtaposes this struggle with youthful determination, and the optimism and enthusiasm brought about by hope. Veronica’s poem, titled Nebraska, is the centerpiece for the fanfare and celebration of a state that abounds with success in all of the ways that make Nebraska a great place to live. The music begins as the sun is about to rise and burst forth with the promise of a new day. It speaks of Nebraska’s natural beauty and landscapes while the sweet song of the Western Meadowlark, our state bird, drifts on the wind. Next, the changing seasons and thriving spirit of Nebraska’s people are portrayed with an energetic, youthful melody leading into a celebratory sesquicentennial fanfare. But as the seasons change, the listener is reminded that to thrive is also to persevere, and soon a storm begins to loom. First the rolling thunder, then the rain, and finally the full devastation of nature’s fury are realized by the combined forces of both ensembles. Yet, as hope springs eternal, we are reminded again of the strength of the pioneer and the roots that keep us anchored against the storm. Published by JohnWillard Utuk (A0.1217376). Do you or someone you know like the Heartstopper webcomic characters Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring? Here's a charming piano solo inspired by Alice Oseman's series that literally has music bringing them both together! Using each letter from their names, two distinct melody lines were created as a musical cryptogram (hidden words matched to musical pitches). Both themes are simple, and I wanted this piece to capture the optimism portrayed in the first two volumes of the graphic novel (and season 1 of the Netflix adaptation). Overall this solo has a light-hearted pop feel and a driving rhythm that can appeal to tweens, teens, and adults alike. Written in the key of C major, players get to explore varied musical elements and techniques: left hand syncopation, simple rhythms of mostly quarter, eighth, and half notes (crochet, quaver, and minums for our UK Friends!), triplets, alternating legato and staccato passages, tempo changes and different dynamic markings (p, mp, mf, f, ff). Musical phrases are 4-8 measures long, which makes recognizing patterns and form easy for students. With performance directions of hopeful, happily, and relaxed, interpretation beyond just notes and rhythms is an advanced concept teachers can explore with students. This solo piece can be played for fun, talent shows, recitals, sight reading, or (for fans of the series) entertainment during Heartstopper episode marathons! This piece celebrates the essence of youth, adventure, and hope of what's to come. Total performance time: 4:35. Key: C Major Musical Elements explored: syncopation, staccato, legato, simple rhythms, dotted quarter notes, triplets, sensitivity to musical interpretation, dynamic contrast, tempo changes, pedaling. Teachers can spark imagination with students by asking, What are the characters doing in this passage? How would they feel in this part? After a brief introduction the theme is presented in a straight forward ensemble harmonization with some altered pitches. The next section places the melody in the viola line with opposing lines in the violins. The ensuing section now gives the tune to the second violin with contrapuntal action in the other voices. A chorus section is now more articulated and active until the tune is handed to the first violin with ever more moving counterpoint in the other voices. One of many marches penned by John Philip Sousa's principal trombonist and virtuoso, Arthur Pryor, this arrangement revises the original 1906 version heavily for the modern concert band. This simple piece follows the most basic march form with four repeated sixteen bar strains: two before and two after the key change trio. The Db Piccolo is transposed and expanded to the modern piccolo and two flutes. five clarinet parts (including the Eb) are reduced to the standard three. Eb altos are transposed for F Horn and given a bit of melody in the third strain. Many other changes scattered throughout the piece update it for the modern band while staying true to the original and breathe some new life into an old and forgotten march.George Willson has been an performer, composer, and conductor for thirty years in various mediums and ensembles.Mp3 provided is a midi extracted from the composition program.
