ISMN 9790900969910. A narrative work for intermediate unaccompanied mixed choirs (SATB divisi, a cappella), setting Lewis Carroll’s epic adventure poem ‘Jabberwocky’. Score includes piano reduction for rehearsal, and pronunciation guide.In Lewis Carroll’s ‘Jabberwocky’, published in his 1871 novel Through the Looking-Glass, a “beamish boy†sets out on an adventure through a mysterious land populated by fantastical creatures, vanquishes a fearsome beast and returns triumphantly home. Central to the enduring appeal of the poem is Carroll’s linguistic creativity. There are at least 16 other choral settings of ‘Jabberwocky’, so why choose this one? Like most, Kirsten Duncan’s composition seeks to express the meanings of the words and actions in the text through musical ideas. Unlike most, this piece is composed for intermediate to advanced mixed adult choirs (SATB divisi) without any instrumental accompaniment, and combines the tradition of Anglican chant (evident in the final stanza) with a mood of fireside storytelling for a ripping musical yarn of high adventure. Kirsten Duncan has had a lifelong passion for choral singing. Now based in Canberra, Australia, she has performed with Gaudeamus (Judith Clingan), Hamburg International School (ISH) Singers, the choirs of Christ Church St Laurence Sydney (Dr Neil McEwan), The Resonants (Helen Swan) and others. Kirsten started composing choral music in 2015, contributing to the musical community that has been a stabilising thread throughout her life. The spear is said to have extraordinary powers. He who possesses it will rule the world and he who loses it thereafter will die an untimely death. The last person recorded to have had it was Adolf Hitler. This musical composition journeys through the time of Hitler and his obsession to obtain the spear, his atrocious acts during his tenure of the spear, and the loss of the spear. The spears main thematic motions are the glissandos in the violin that represent the spears anger and tortuous ways. I. Spear Found takes place during his times as an understudy of Dietrich Eckart, a dedicated satanist and figure in the Occult Thule Society and founding member of the Nazi party. Dietrich said: Follow Hitler! He will dance, but it is I who have called the tune! Spear Found, is Hitler's journey to capturing the spear to rule the world. II. Spear Possessed begins with no time meter or key signature. It is ad liberty of the performers and is a musical representation of the spears possessive powers towards evil. This movement takes place during the time of the Holocaust and the actions committed during Hitler's reign of world domination. The movement infers a jewish folk song titled, Dayeinu, a jewish Passover song meaning it would have been enough. This song is set in context of freedom. The movement goes through variations of Dayeinu and the spears version of a possessed Dayeinu. The violin has fast and rapid rhythms with small thematic material of the folk tune. At the end of the movement, the piano strikes the low end of the piano with a soft yarn mallet to symbolize the bombs dropping and the start of World War II. III. Spear Lost takes place during WWII and the Marines efforts to take down Hitler's reign. During the 3rd movement, the Marine Corps music comes to life as they take control of the spear and ultimately end the war. The Spear however, takes its last stand as the spears motif soars over the possessed marine tune. At the end of the movement, the spear is once again screeching as it survives and goes missing once again.

As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Coven Trio for Piano, Flute, and Clarinet evokes the mood from the three witches scene at the beginning of Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. I imagined this would be a musical setting of their meeting. Think...something wicked this way comes....The piece has five connected sections described as: Sultry, Hypnotic, Evocative, Frenzied, and Calm. It opens with the sultry sound of the lowest register of the flute who is joined by the piano and clarinet stating the opening theme. Then the clarinet begins a hypnotic canon that gradually gets faster and faster. The canon morphs into an evocative fanfare culminating with the piano in a frenzied climax and concludes with a calm chorale-like passage. This exciting trio that explores the range and a variety of extended techniques for Piano, Flute, and Clarinet. The extended techniques used in this piece are flutter tonguing, fall-offs (downward pitch bend) for flute and clarinet as well as key pops for flute. Key pops are accomplished by quickly fingering the notes indicated without blowing into the flute. The sound is soft and staccato but does have a pitch. This piece also requires the pianist and clarinetist to strike a metal brace on the piano frame with a medium yarn or cord wrapped marimba mallet whilst the pianist holds the sustain pedal down to produce a percussive effect. I encourage performers to use anything (costumes, lighting, sets, and props) to bring this piece to life beyond the exciting soundscape.

Here is a new suite of older carols for string quartet in which each musician is required to play a wee bit of percussion in addition to his or her real instrument. The potential for entertaining visual theater is nearly as high as the potential for mishap. (If all goes according to plan, nothing should actually go airborne.)This is something of a sequel to my earlier Christmas quartet And Therefore Be Merry, which has never been out of print since it was first published over twenty years ago. But where that work was a continuous medley, this is a set of independent and more fully developed movements, each able to stand on its own. As mentioned above, each member of the quartet is responsible for a small item of percussion. These are all things which could readily be found in a local school band room: a triangle, a tambourine, a suspended cymbal - played with a soft (yarn) stick - and a small frame drum, played with the bare hand. These are all earlier, earthier carols than what one typically finds on the radio or playing over the speakers at the mall. They include Gloucestershire Wassail, Riu Riu Chiu, Angelus ad Virginem, The Sans Day Carol, The Wexford Carol, and Masters in This Hall. Being perhaps less familiar, they bring a welcome respite from the overworked seasonal fare we all hear a bit too much of each year. They speak of simpler times, and of a far less frantic approach to Christmas. These fresh and inventive arrangements will make a useful addition to a quartet’s repertoire, provided the players have the requisite spirit of adventure. Score and Parts total 67 pages. Performance time is about 14 minutes.
