Kommos (Lamentation) / "When the World Moved On" - Oboe 2
Oboe (band part)
Oboe Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1018945 Composed by Benjamin Harry S…
(+)
Oboe Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1018945 Composed by Benjamin Harry Sajo. 20th Century,Contemporary. Individual part. 1 pages. Benjamin Sajo #6078673. Published by Benjamin Sajo (A0.1018945). Programme Notes: This composition was written to be considered for pairing alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #3, the Eroica, but can stand on its own virtues as an intense and slow meditation on heroism. The music is like a boiling pot on the stove that’s just began to overflow its bubbles. The first part of the title, kommos, is a Classical Greek term from Attic dramaturgy, literally meaning striking but specifically referring to beating oneself up during lamentation--ripping at the hair, gouging out the eyes--like Oedipus--slapping the forehead, and other acts amid moments of extreme emotional turmoil. For example, from Aeschylus's play Agamemnon, a character bewails: Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! For you have destroyed me-and utterly [...]What is this fresh woe [...]what monstrous, monstrous horror, beyond love's enduring, beyond all remedy? And help stands far away! We can easily imagine physical accompaniment to the script; rather than bottling up the pain, the hero lets it all explosively come out.  The second part of the title, When the world moved on, is an epigraph taken from American author Stephen King’s The Dark Tower epic. The primary setting of the novel, a world similar in many ways to our own, is experiencing a dark age where the glorious past is all but a distant memory and all good things are referred to wistfully as occurring, When the world moved on. Yet, the main protagonist, Roland, the last gunslinger, emphasizes that it is not just a figure of speech, but the literal distances between destinations have increased, the positions of the stars have changed, as well as the occurrence of other unnatural phenomena. The world has become a gulf of isolation from all corners. Taken together, this piece is a lamentation for when the world moved on. Truly completed on Yom Kippur during the Covid-19 Pandemic, being unable to fast or go to synagogue, this is my atonement.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Instrumental Duet Instrumental Duet,Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.596575 Composed by Juan MarÃa Solare. 20th Century,Jazz,World. Score and parts. 12 pages. Juan Maria Solare #4794271. Published by Juan Maria Solare (A0.596575). About the title: - First of all, entradora is an adjective that can be applied to a femenine noun. (In Spanish you have different declinations for masculine and femenine adjectives). The masculine version is entrador. - Second, entradora can be understood in this context as a substantivized adjective, i.e. a word that is actually an adjective, but is used as if it were a noun, like if I say Now I will play 'Entradora'. (for a more scientific explanation check yor favorite English grammar book). - Third, entradora is a wink to Argentine composer Julián Plaza, who used adjectives as one-word title of several of his milongas and tangos, for instance Nocturna, DanzarÃn, Melancólico, Melancólica, Sensiblero, Nostálgico, Disonante, Dominguera, Expresivo, Futura, Instrumental, Juguetón, Paseandera, Payadora, Solemne, Temperamental - and possibly others that I am not aware of. - And fourth, the meaning of the word entradora in the coloquial Spanish of Argentina is this one: if applied to a person, is someone that easily makes friends, that wins the trust of the people very easily, who is very charming. I applied to an object (or to a melody) it means that it is easy to grasp, that you remember it immediately (as an earworm), that is accessible and uncomplicated. - Oh, there is a fifth point: are you native (or good) English speaker? After all this explanation do you come to an understandable translation of this word, Entradora? If yes, let me know! The milonga Entradora was composed in Bremen, Germany, from 10 to 13 November 2018. Duration: around 2'15. Premiere by Juan MarÃa Solare on 8 January 2019 at the theatre of the university of Bremen (recital Neue -und alte- Innigkeit, New -and old- intimism). Second version: for 8 instruments. Premiere: Orquesta No TÃpica, 22 January 2019, theatre of the university of Bremen. Third version: for piano four hands. Bremen, 16 January 2019. Premiere: Selma Hande Gade and Juan MarÃa Solare, Bellapais Spring Music Festival, Kyrenia, Cyprus, 16 April 2019. Video by the composer in his private Studiohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4f89TCd3di8 Entradora is dedicated to Gudrun Zelle.

Brass Ensemble - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.964567 Composed by Henry Purcell. Arranged by Betsy Bright. Baroque,Concert,Contemporary. Score and parts. 8 pages. Bright Music Company #6247011. Published by Bright Music Company (A0.964567). This heart-wrenching aria is adored by all audiences. Even without words, the melody is tragically beautiful and brings tears to the eyes of the listener. This brass quintet arrangement features the flugelhorn (or optional trumpet) as Dido. It is basic enough on the surface that it can be played by Level 2 ensembles. But of course it can be presented by professional ensembles with first rate artistic expression and it will be the highlight of any recital program. This piece is also short enough that it can fit beautifully into an education program without boring our younger listeners!Duration: about 2 minutes

Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.911345 By Keith Terrett. By Various. Arranged by Keith Terrett. Jazz,Spiritual,Traditional. 43 pages. Keith Terrett #517391. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.911345). Four Early Jazz Classics from the USA for Brass Quintet includes: 1)Little Brown Jug:It was originally a drinking song. It remained well known as a folk song into the early 20th century. Like many songs which make reference to alcohol, it enjoyed new popularity during the Prohibition era. In 1939, bandleader Glenn Miller recorded and broadcast his swing instrumental arrangement of the tune with great success, and the number became one of the best known orchestrations of the American Big Band era. 2)Frankie & Johnny:Frankie and Johnny (sometimes spelled Frankie and Johnnie; also known as Frankie and Albert or just Frankie) is a traditional American popular song. It tells the story of a woman, Frankie, who finds that her man Johnny was making love to another woman and shoots him dead. Frankie is then arrested; in some versions of the song she is also executed. 3)Tin Roof Blues:Tin Roof Blues is a jazz composition by the New Orleans Rhythm Kings first recorded in 1923. It was written by band members Paul Mares, Ben Pollack, Mel Stitzel, George Brunies and Leon Roppolo. The tune has become a jazz standard and is one of the most recorded and often played New Orleans jazz compositions. 4)Battle Hymn of the Republic:The Battle Hymn of the Republic, also known as Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory outside of the United States, is a song by American writer Julia Ward Howe using the music from the song John Brown’s Body. Howe’s more famous lyrics were written in November 1861, and first published in The Atlantic Monthly in February 1862. The song links the judgment of the wicked at the end of time (Old Testament, Isaiah 63; New Testament, Rev. 19) with the American Civil War. Since that time, it has become an extremely popular and well-known American patriotic song. Arranged here for Brass Quintet, this arrangement is available for most ensembles of your choice, e-mail for other arrangements. An excellent selection for your next concert!

Three Laments of Heloise for Chamber Orchestra

Chamber Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.876665 Composed by Dosia McKay. 20th Century,Contemporary,Renaissance. Score and parts. 81 pages. Gavia Music #57229. Published by Gavia Music (A0.876665). Three Laments of Heloise were inspired by the Letters of Abelard and Heloise, especially the character of Heloise, her crushing loss, self-denial, sacrifice, and forced conformity to the standards of medieval society. The first movement entitled Queens Envied Me My Joys is Heloise’s recollection of early days with Abelard. Every wife, every young girl desired you in absence and was on fire in your presence, writes Heloise. The pleasures of lovers which we shared have been too sweet… They are always there before my eyes, bringing with them awakened longings… The second movement If Not With You, My Heart Is Nowhere, expresses Heloise’s sense of abandonment by her lover. She writes to him: My heart was not in me but with you, and now, even more, if it is not with you it is nowhere; truly, without you I cannot exist. The third movement, My Most Wretched Soul, gives voice to Heloise’s continued struggle with her loss and the reality of the convent life. She does not see herself as a servant of God, but rather a hypocrite who remains pious on the outside and rages inwardly. Of all wretched women I am the most wretched, and amongst the unhappy I am unhappiest. How can it be called repentance for sins, however great the mortification of the flesh, if the mind still retains the will to sin and is on fire with its old desires? Modal scales and dance sequences give the Laments a Renaissance feel. Music theory students might appreciate the fact that the unifying element of the three movements is the interval of the 7th which appears very frequently in melodic and harmonic gestures and creates a feeling of ambiguity and of a lack of resolution. For chamber orchestra: Flute (or Piccolo), Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Strings (Quintet, or 4,4,3,2,1, or larger), 2 Percussion: Frame Drum, Tambourine. Total duration 8:00. Possible transcriptions for period Renaissance instruments - please contact the composer. Composed in 2009. Copyright 2009 Dosia McKay / Gavia Music (ASCAP).

Choral Choir (SA) - Digital Download SKU: A0.873032 Composed by Sally Whitwell. Contemporary,Standards. Octavo. 6 pages. Sally Whitwell #3869015. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.873032). Composer’s Note - DaybreakDuring the Winter of 2016, I journeyed to my hometown Canberra for a job interview and audition. It was for the head of the new Music Academy at Canberra Girls Grammar School, my old school. Which was kind of weird. As part of my specifically designed interview/audition experience, I was required to run a composition workshop, and this song Daybreak is the result of that.It was an odd experience to return to the scenes of my youth, to see how much everything had changed. So many new buildings, so many of the old buildings repurposed, so many more opportunities afforded to the girls at the school now than we could ever have dreamed in the late 80s and early 90s. It was pretty early in the morning when I arrived, the winter mist just beginning to clear to one of those perfect sunny cold Canberra days. The school is directly down the road from Parliament House, and as the mist cleared to reveal that magnificent flagpole above the treetops surrounding the school, I decided that the joy and optimism of a new day would be the perfect subject for our composing collaboration. The girls were very generous with their ideas. The song was finished within a few days and I sent it back to the school. I think they liked it? It was hard to tell from their response. I didn’t get the job. (No surprise to me, as I have almost never been successful at auditions and job interviews. Fortunately people just know my work, ask me to do stuff, and I just say yes. Haha.) But I’m a big believer in creativity as a way of healing. I still really like our song we wrote, those lovely girls and I, so I am releasing it into the wild.
