Cello Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.547674 Composed by James M. Guthrie. Contemporary,Instructional. Individual part. 9 pages. Jmsgu3 #3031709. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.547674). Dardanus Variations for Solo Cello is a set of variations on a thematic fragment from Dardanus, a tragédie-lyrique by J.P. Rameau (1683-1764). Each variation depicts a different scene from the opera.I: Entrance of Dardanus: Son of Electra and JupiterII: King Teucer proposes the marriage of his daughter Iphise to King AnténorIII: King Anténor accepts Iphise to become his brideIV: Ismenor the Wizard introduces Iphise to DardanusV: Dardanus encounters the sea monsterVI: The Sea Monster creates havoc for King AnténorVII: Dardanus falls in love with IphiseVIII: Dardanus slays the Sea Monster, saving King Anténor's lifeIX: King Teucer and Dardanus make peaceX: King Teucer permits for Dardanus to marry IphiseXI: The Proposal of DardanusXII: Iphise rejects the proposalXIII: The Second Proposal of DardanusIXV: Wedding Dance Dardanus is connected to the Trojan War through his lineage and the founding of the royal house of Troy. The Dardanoi, the descendants of Dardanus, formed a contingent among Troy's allies in the Trojan War. The House of Dardanus, of which Dardanus was the founder, played a significant role in the lead-up to the war. The city of Troy, founded by Dardanus's descendant, Ilus, was central to the myths surrounding the Trojan War. Additionally, Aeneas, a prominent figure in the Trojan War, was referred to as a Dardanian and was destined to save the House of Dardanus from extinction. Therefore, Dardanus's lineage and the founding of Troy are the critical connections between Dardanus and the Trojan War.Ancestry and Founder: Dardanus was the son of Zeus and the Pleiad Electra. He was the mythical founder of Dardania on the Hellespont and the ancestor of the Dardanians of the Troad and, through Aeneas, of the Romans.Migration and Settlement: According to mythology, Dardanus fled from Arcadia to the island of Samothrace and then to the Troad, where Teucer, the ruler of Phrygia, hospitably received him. He married Teucer's daughter Bateia and became the founder of the royal house of Troy.Family and Descendants: Dardanus married Chryse, with whom he fathered two sons, Idaeus and Deimas. He later married Batea and had several children, including Erichthonius, who became the ancestor of many famous individuals in the Troad, including Tros, Ganymede, Laomedon, and Priam.Cultural Depictions: Dardanus has been the subject of various operas by composers such as Jean-Philippe Rameau, Carl Stamitz, and Antonio Sacchini, reflecting the enduring influence of his mythological story.Legacy: Dardanus lives on in the Dardanelles, the narrow strait separating Asia and Europe, once known as the Hellespont, a name also linked to Greek mythology. These facts highlight Dardanus's role as a critical figure in the foundation of Dardania and the royal house of Troy and his rich and enduring mythological legacy.

Cello Solo - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1280451 Composed by St. Thomas Aquinas, 13th Century. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Christian,Early Music,Historic,Medieval,Sacred. Individual part. 2 pages. Jmsgu3 #871859. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1280451). A solo accompaniment for the procession of the Transfer of the Most Blessed Sacrament on Good Friday. Designed to accompany congregational singing.Pange lingua gloriosi corporis mysterium is a Medieval Latin hymn attributed to Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225–1274) for the Feast of Corpus Christi. It is also sung on Maundy Thursday during the procession from the church to the place where the Blessed Sacrament is kept until Good Friday. The last two stanzas (called, separately, Tantum ergo) are sung at Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The hymn expresses the doctrine that the bread and wine are changed into the body and blood of Christ during the celebration of the Eucharist. It is often sung in English as the hymn Of the Glorious Body Telling to the same tune as the Latin. The hymn is a significant part of the Christian liturgy and is traditionally sung at Vespers and during processions on Corpus Christi and Holy Thursday.

Cello - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549203 Composed by Gabrieli. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Renaissance,Standards. 58 pages. Jmsgu3 #3461839. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549203). Instrumentation: 8 Cellos arranged in two choirs. Full Score: 28 pg. Study Score: 14 pg. Parts: 2 pg. ea. Innovations First of all, Gabrieli preferred sacred vocal and certainly instrumental music. Hence, he concentrated on music that consequently took advantage of resonance and likewise reverberation for maximum effect. Seems like Gabrieli may have invented dynamics – or was rather the first to indicate them such as in his Sonata Pian’ e Forte. Consequently, he was also a pioneer in spatial techniques. He therefore developed and used very specific notation to indicate instrumentation. Gabrieli experimented with assembling massive instrumental forces into isolated groups separated by space. In this way, he consequently contributed heavily to the Baroque Concertato style. Polychoral Works Gabrieli probably used the layout of the San Marco church for his experiments. This is because he worked there as a musician and composer. Furthermore, the church had two choir lofts facing each other. He certainly used these to create striking spatial effects between instrumental forces. Certainly, many of his works are composed such that a choir or instrumental group could first be heard on one side, then consequently followed by a response from the group on the other side. Sometimes there was probably a third group positioned near the main altar as well. Spatial Music Above all, Gabrieli studied carefully detailed groups of instruments and singers. Furthermore, it seems like he created precise directions for instrumentation in rather than two groups. The instruments, because they could be appropriately situated, could consequently be heard with perfect clearness at distant locations. As a result, arrangements that seem bizarre on paper, can in contrast sound perfectly in balance. First Works Finally, Gabrieli published his first motets along with his uncle Andrea's compositions in Concerti (1587). These compositions furthermore indicate considerable usage of dialogue and echo effects. Consequently, here we see low and high choirs with the variance between their ranges indicated by instrumental accompaniment. Seems like Gabrieli’s later motets Sacrae Symphoniae (1597) move away from close antiphony. In contrast, he moves towards not simply echoing the material but developing it through sequential choral entrances. Even more, he takes this procedure to the extreme in the Motet Omnes Gentes. Unlike earlier works, here the instruments are certainly an essential part of the presentation. Also, only parts marked: Capella are supposed to be sung. Homophony Hence, after 1605, Gabrieli moves to a much more homophonic style. He writes sections purely for instruments – which calls Sinfonia – and smaller sections for vocal soloists, accompanied by a basso continuo.

Published by jmsgu3 (A0.550708). The Cello Choir Christmas BookChristmas Reharmonizations by James M. Guthrie. The Cello Choir Christmas Book is a collection of the 18 Most Famous Christmas Songs of all time with new and surprising harmony.FormatFirst of all, your cello choir can perform the Cello Choir Christmas Book directly from the score. This is easy because each song is only two pages long, hence there are no page turns. Alternatively, this download includes a full set of parts. So various combinations are also possible: e.g. cello 1 & 2 read from the score on one stand, while cello 3 & 4 use the parts on a separate stands. The Cello Choir Christmas Book is available in whatever format works best for your particular ensemble.PerformanceThis collection of the most famous 18 Christmas songs can be performed as a medley as written. Moreover, selected songs from the Cello Choir Christmas Book could be chosen as the last verse of a hymn presentation. In this case, just play the usual arrangement from the hymnal for the first verses, then switch to this arrangement for the final verse. This adds a great deal of energy and unexpected adventure to your performance. Each song could be repeated depending upon the length of time required. This is a very versatile collection. Suitable for Christmas parties or receptions, church services, and receptions, nightclubs, and school presentations. Also, they are very easy to perform or even sight-read.MusicEach song in the Cello Choir Christmas Book is adventurously reharmonized, but the melody always remains perfectly intact. This makes it easy for anyone to sing along. Moreover, the songs end properly in the correct key so as to add an element of familiarity and closure. Tempo markings occur at the beginning of each song, but you can adjust these to your liking. Articulations are carefully calculated to emphasize the characteristics of stringed instruments.ContentsVeni, veni, Emmanuel (O Come, O Come, Emmanuel)Helmsley (Lo! Cello Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549259 Composed by James M. Guthrie. 20th Century,Contemporary,Instructional,Standards. Individual part. 9 pages. Jmsgu3 #3479669. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549259). I. Moderato, II. Lento misterioso, III. Rondo Spirito The Moderato unfolds in the standard sonata-allegro form. It explores some divergent elements: a lyrical Dorian principal theme, a terse Phrygian subordinate theme subjected to extreme compression in an asymmetrical meter, and a brief closing theme - again in Dorian. The development section presents fragmented variations of the themes and a new theme essentially extracted from the transition. The recapitulation proceeds as usual, with the secondary theme appearing in tonic - in this case, G Dorian. The principal theme's final statements appear in the closing theme's rhythm. A coda based on a fragment of the closing theme ends the movement. The Lento misterioso is an elegiac ternary construction that introduces quartal/quintal harmony and modal exploration. The contrasting B section involves an agitato passage that investigates Phrygian relations. The Rondo Spirito is a simple Rondo: ABACABA. The impetus of the movement derives from elements of the previous two movements: quartal/quintal harmony from the Lento and asymmetrical meter from the Moderato. Other elements appearing in this piece are cycles of thirds, modal explorations, and extended range. Â

Veni, Veni, Emmanuel, also known as O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, is a Christian hymn for Advent. Here are some interesting facts about it:Ancient Origins: The hymn synthesizes the great, ancient O Antiphons sung for Vespers during Advent.Tune and Translation: The familiar tune, Veni Emmanuel, was first linked with this hymn in 1851, when Thomas Helmore published it in the Hymnal Noted, paired with an early revision of Neale's English translation.Variations: While the Veni Emmanuel tune predominates in the English-speaking world, several others have been closely associated with the hymn.Significance: The hymn is significant for its ancient origins, association with the Advent season and musical adaptations.

Cello Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549261 Composed by James M. Guthrie. 20th Century,Contemporary,Instructional. Individual part. 7 pages. Jmsgu3 #3479689. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549261). The Fantasia follows the general scheme of the classical sonata-allegro form. A repeated fragmented motive characterizes the primary theme. The transition introduces pentatonic and synthetic materials that dissipate into a Lydian chord. The Lydian mode provides materials for the lyrical secondary theme section. A closing section revisits elements of the synthetic scale from the transition. After a repeat of the exposition, the development section begins agitato, fragmenting and transposing various diminutions of the primary motive. This is interrupted by a double augmentation and then a bariolage passage leading to declamatory statements of the primary theme transposed eventually to the subdominant. After modulating the transition materials, the secondary theme is developed in the subdominant. This time, the music is adjusted to explore a quotation of the first measure of Bach’s Cello Suite I. This treatment dissolves into a two-part transition (quasi-spiccato), leading to a final development of the Lydian motive, this time in double stops. A final transition section provides the thematic impetus for the third movement. The recapitulation ensues with the re-transition somewhat truncated and the secondary theme transposed to the tonic. A coda section dissipates excess energy while developing Lydian ideas in preparation for a quiet closing that repeats the now-broken Lydian chord.

A set of variations for solo cello based upon the madrigal Amarilli mia bella from La Nuove Musiche, 1602, by Giulio Caccini.Amarilli, mia bella is a well-known solo madrigal composed by Giulio Caccini. Included in his collection Le nuove musiche from 1602, It is considered one of the most popular solo madrigals of the 17th century and has remained a prominent piece in vocal pedagogy. Alessandro Guarini wrote the text of the madrigal. The song is distinguished by its leggiadria and dolcezza, and it was one of the first of Caccini's songs to be widely disseminated through Italy and Europe. Amarilli, mia bella is the oldest song in the 24 Italian Songs and Arias. Various composers have reworked it, and it has appeared in vocal anthologies up to the present day.Le nuove musiche is a significant collection of monodies and songs for solo voice and basso continuo by the composer Giulio Caccini, published in Florence in July 1602. It is one of the earliest and most significant examples of music written in the early baroque style of the seconda pratica. The volume contains 12 madrigals and ten arias and is dedicated to Lorenzo Salviati. It is known for its essential introduction, which clearly describes the purpose, intent, and correct performance of monody from the time. The preface also includes musical examples of ornaments and expresses Caccini's disappointment at inappropriate ornamentation by the singers of his day. Le nuove musiche was highly influential and inspired many similar collections in the seventeenth century. It is regularly anthologized in modern collections, and its success changed the course of music history.
