Published by Matthew Scott Phillips (A0.1004152). Throughout the centuries, civilizations have used sundials to tell time. This instrument consists of a gnomon (Greek for knower), a long pole or incline, whose shadow is cast onto a flat stone or metal plate, that either lies on the ground or is erected onto a wall. This plate is marked with the hours of the day, and the gnomon's shadow passes over the marks. More than just an ancient timepiece, these instruments are doorways to the eternal past, and prophets of the eternal future. They bare witness to the infinite fleeting-ness of the lives of human beings. Unlike a modern watch or digital clock, in which every second enjoys its own momentary significance, the hours as marked by the sundial flow into one another in a continuous stream, that is ultimately timeless. The final hour of any mortal creature is, in this way, no more significant than the first, and all our hours seem insignificant in the context of the cosmos' grandness. Etched upon a great many sundials, in Greek, Latin, English, German, or French, is a motto designed to inspire human beings to consider these truths. Why so many sundial makers felt the need to inscribe on their creations their own philosophies and musings is unclear. Yet, each of these mottos seems contrived to express the contemplations of time and eternity so integral to the sundials' existence. Mottos such as umbra sumus (we amount to shadow) often hold multiple meanings. The we referred to can be the hours, which seem extant only because of the shadow passing over them. Or it can refer to the ephemeral nature of our lives, which on the grand calendar of eternity are so short as to be nothing. Or perhaps it warns that time itself is no more than an illusion; a shadow. Whether they are existential, humorous (I only count the sunny hours), or offer advice (use the hours, don't count them), these mottos are intended to give us pause: to compel us to look for a moment, not at the fleeting significance of our mundane lives, ticked away as they are in tiny hours, but to consider the eternal time that lies beyond us, and to therefore be briefly in contact with it. This composition, approximately an hour long and written for piano trio (Piano, Violin, and Cello), intends as its goal the same purpose as the mottos that inspired it. To transport those who listen to it (listen not merely hear) away from the earthly, and into the cosmic. Each movement is named after a different motto. The mottos, their English translations and the locations of the sundials that bare (or once bore) them is listed at the front. This is one hour, hopefully, that will not simply fade away, but rather will be one spent in the company of the eternal. .

When the professional EvNiKa Clarinet, Violin, and Piano Trio asked for original music, this water idea began to form in my head. The Stream, inspired by Virgil Thomson’s piece The River (1937), stylistically models various American speech rhythms and folk melodies to personify a small but growing body of water. William Blake (1757-1827), a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual art of the Romantic Age, published the lyric poem The Lamb in his collection, Songs of Innocence, in 1789.The Lamb is presented as from the viewpoint of, and in the voice of, a child. In the first stanza, the child asks the lamb if it knows its Creator; in the second, it tells the creature, by means of metaphor, that its Creator is the Lord Jesus Christ, who like the lamb took on the flesh of a created being, “little,†“meek,†and “mild.†The child declares that he/she shares with the creature the name of the One who is, in Christian belief, both the sacrificial Lamb and the Shepherd of his flock. William Blake (1757-1827), a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual art of the Romantic Age, published the lyric poem The Lamb in his collection, Songs of Innocence, in 1789.The Lamb is presented as from the viewpoint of, and in the voice of, a child. In the first stanza, the child asks the lamb if it knows its Creator; in the second, it tells the creature, by means of metaphor, that its Creator is the Lord Jesus Christ, who like the lamb took on the flesh of a created being, “little,†“meek,†and “mild.†The child declares that he/she shares with the creature the name of the One who is, in Christian belief, both the sacrificial Lamb and the Shepherd of his flock. My Variations on the hymn tune Gordon (My Jesus, I Love Thee) are intended for church pianists looking for interesting arrangements of hymns familiar to their congregations. The four variations in this set display increasing rhythmic complexity as one plays them from beginning to end, ranging from continuous streams of eighth notes to eighth-note triplets to sixteenths. The first, and simplest, variation can be played alone. Variations 2-4 are written as a continuous group, though they too can be played individually if desired, by adding a conclusive tonic note in the bass. For the most part the pitches of the hymn tune are presented without ornamentation, though there are occasional exceptions. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

These short Preludes for guitar are intended to illustrate a particular technical point or points. It may be either technical or compositional or both and I would have to say that I have been influenced by Tarrega’s Preludes which he wrote mostly for his students and so have called them Preludes rather than Studies. I learnt Tarrega’s pieces such as Adelita and Lagrima early in my study of the guitar and always enjoyed their nature as both technical exercises but also performance pieces. I have tried to emulate that with these pieces. The piece makes extensive use of open strings but is essentially a set of variations. The melody keeps returning but with small alterations as does the accompaniment. There is also a B section in E minor before a return to the opening melody. The return to the opening section has, as a variation, a change in bass and harmony. The original C major7 chord becomes E minor by changing the bass and the E minor chord becomes C major7 in the same fashion. The effect is subtle but attractive and is no harder to play.

The composer has written about the piece: â??The music describes Santiago's emotions, thoughts and actions during his last journey. The trumpet announces his signature theme, accompanied by the brass and strings depicting the sound of the seagulls and the ocean. The magnitude of the vast ocean, the anticipation of catching the fish, memories of a distant waltz, and the exciting fight that ends in triumph. Now, it's time to return home with his valuable possessions. He already won the last and most important fight of his life.
