The music is in the key of G major and the total duration is 2 minutes. This music was written as a self-accompanied work, as such the underlying harmonic structure is built into the melody. Some other distinctive features include an abundance of chromatic notes, changes in tempo such as rubato and accelerando, and dramatic fermata. The viola is a bowed instrument which is larger than the violin, and has a deeper sound. Between 1550 and 1700 two violas existed one called "tenor' viola and the other the "alto" viola. These two instruments were tuned the same as the modern viola but the tenor viola was longer in size. The tenor fell out of use after 1700 due to it being to large to be played comfortably. Subsequently the alto viola became known simply as the "viola", although in French the instrument is called the "alto". Since the 1700s it has played the role of the middle voice of the violin family; the violin is tuned a perfect 5th above the viola, while the cello is tuned an octave below. |
