Added by magataganm, 07 Jul 2012 "The Spinning Wheel" was written in the mid-1800s by an Irish lawyer and poet named John Francis Waller. It's a beautiful ballad written as a waltz. The waltz has a rigid but gentle beat that seems to echo the foot movements of the one operating the spinning wheel. Listeners talk about their minds drifting peacefully away as the song progresses. It tells the story of a young woman who is spinning in her home in Ireland while looking after her blind grandmother who is sitting by the fireside. Although originally written for traditional folk instruments, I created this arrangement for Concert (Pedal) Harp. |
