Benjamin, Louis, Paul Godard est un compositeur français né le 18 août 1849 à Paris et mort le 10 janvier 1895 à Cannes. Il entre au Conservatoire de Paris et étudie le violon avec Richard Hammer et Henri Vieuxtemps. Il apprend la composition avec Henri Rober.

A l'âge de seize ans, il compose sa première sonate pour violon et piano. Il obtient le prix Chartier et celui de la ville de Paris en 1878 pour sa symphonie dramatique pour soli choeurs et orchestre, le Tasse. C'est également en 1878 qu'il représente à Anvers le 31 janvier 1884, son premier opéra les Bijoux de Zalamea tombé dans l'oubli depuis.

En 1887, il devient professeur au Conservatoire de Paris. Son chef-d'?uvre, Jocelyn d'après un poème de Lamartine (Bruxelles, 25 février 1888) dont on retient la célèbre Berceuse qui révèle le meilleur du talent lyrique de ce compositeur. Un autre opéra, le Dante et Béatrice est représenté à l'Opéra-Comique le 13 mai 1890.

Il écrit deux autres opéras : la Vivandière dont l'orchestration est terminée par Paul Vidal (création à titre posthume à Paris le 1er avril 1895) et les Guelphes représenté (également à titre posthume) à Rouen le 17 janvier 1902.

Il compose aussi trois symphonies à programme : Symphonie gothique (1883), Symphonie orientale (1884) et Symphonie légendaire (1886), un Concerto romantique pour violon et orchestre (1876), deux concertos pour piano, trois quatuors à cordes, quatre sonates pour violon et piano, une sonate pour violoncelle et piano et deux trios avec piano, une centaine de mélodies.

G. Schirmer publie un recueil en deux volumes des ?uvres pour piano (New York, 1895) et Paolo Gallico un autre recueil de pièces pour piano (New York, 1909).
