Weber's work, especially his operas, greatly influenced the development of the Romantic opera in German music. He was also an innovative composer for the clarinet, for which he wrote many works. His body of Catholic religious music was highly popular in 19th century Germany. Weber also wrote music journalism and was interested in folksong, and learned lithography to engrave his own works. His operas influenced the early work of Richard Wagner.
