John Dowland (1563 - 1626)

John Dowland était un compositeur et luthiste né en Angleterre ou en Irlande en 1563 et mort le 20 février 1626.

On dispose de très peu d'éléments sur la première partie de sa vie, mais on pense qu'il serait né à Londres ou éventuellement à Dublin. On sait qu'il a séjourné à Paris, où il était au service de l'ambassadeur auprès de la cour française. Il devint catholique romain à cette période, ce qui le conduisit, selon ses dires à l'écarter d'un poste à la cour protestante d'Élisabeth Ire d'Angleterre. Ce qui l'amena en tout cas à travailler à la cour de Christian IV de Danemark. Il retourna en Angleterre en 1606 et en 1612 il assura un des postes de luthiste auprès de Jacques Ier d'Angleterre. Il mourut à Londres.

La plus grande partie de sa musique est destinée à son instrument, le luth. Son ?uvre comprend donc plusieurs pièces pour luth seul, des lute songs (chansons pour une voix et luth), des chants à plusieurs parties vocales et luth, et plusieurs ?uvres pour consort (ensemble instrumental) de violes et luth. Une de ses pièces les plus connues est le lute song Flow My Tears.

Il écrivit par la suite son ?uvre instrumentale la plus connue, Lachrimae or Seaven Teares Figured in Seaven Passionate Pavans (Pleurs ou Sept larmes représentées par sept pavanes passionnées), un groupe de sept pavanes pour cinq violes et luth, chacune étant basée sur Flow My Tears. Cette pièce devint l'une des plus connues de la musique pour ensemble instrumental de cette époque. Sa pavane Lachrymae antiquae fut aussi l'un des grands succès du dix-septième siècle.

La musique de Dowland exprime souvent la mélancolie, un sentiment très présent dans la musique de cette époque. Il écrivit d'ailleurs une pièce pour ensemble dont le titre pourrait selon certains résumer son ?uvre, intitulée Semper Dowland, semper dolens (toujours Dowland, toujours souffrant). Ce serait cependant oublier d'autres pièces plus humoristiques, comme My Lord Chamberlain, His Gaillard (an invention for two to play upon one lute) - une invention pour deux luthistes jouant sur un seul luth.

La musique de Dowland est un thème récurrent des livres de science-fiction de Philip K. Dick.
