Hartsough grad≠u≠at≠ed from the Ca≠ze≠no≠via Sem≠in≠ary in 1852, was or≠dained a Meth≠od≠ist min≠is≠ter in 1853, and joined the Onei≠da Con≠fer≠ence in New York. Around 1868, he moved west for health rea≠sons, be≠com≠ing su≠per≠in≠tend≠ent of the Utah Mis≠sion, then pre≠sid≠ing el≠der of the Wy≠om≠ing Dis≠trict. About the same time, he served as mu≠sic≠al ed≠it≠or for Jo≠seph Hil≠lman?s Re≠viv≠al≠ist. In 1871, Hart≠sough be≠came pas≠tor of the Meth≠od≠ist church in Ep≠worth, Io≠wa.
