Friction, Pressure, Impact comprises three movements, each of which focuses on the question of musical metabolism in a different way. The first movement, Friction, has a moderately fast metabolism, working through the musical material between the instruments with some speed yet with a kind of compulsively controlled rate of evolution. Pressure has a much slower pace of working through its musical argument, which is relatively minimal. It moves heavily and sensuously through its course. Impact changes and shifts with a mercurial speed; although this movement has one single argument throughout, it is an argument that is constantly changing shape and perspective: phrase-lengths, local patterns, registers, and harmonic inversions are constantly in flux, pelting the music's surface like a hale storm.- Hannah Lash.

The source of the present edition is preserved in the Archivio di Stato, Bologna. Editorial principles: In the score, the number of editorial interventions has been kept to a minimum. The original dynamic and expression markings are extremely few and far between, but precise. Only three dynamic levels are specified: forte, dolce ( = piano) and dolce assai ( = pianissimo). As regards expression markings we note the complete absence of the legato sign, though the appoggiatura, staccato, trill and two different types of bow-vibrato (both in association with dolce or dolce assai) can all be found. It is a well known fact that 18th century vibrato, obtained not by a movement of the left hand but rather by a variation in the pressure of the bow, was an expressive effect to be used with discretion and not, as today, a constant means of sound production. Ukrai nian Sketches, written in 1941, is the last surviving work by the Polish-Ukrainian composer Józef Koffler. Originally a follower of the Second Viennese School, Koffler, himself a professor and functionary in Soviet Ukraine, had to change his style in the face of enormous political pressure. Despite the harsh circumstances, these six miniatures for string quartet are free of all kitsch of 'socialist realism' and radiate an independent expressiveness and immediate lyricism in the interweaving of Eastern European folklore and the classical string quartet tradition.
