the title suggests, there
should be a
tongue-in-cheek aspect to
the performance of this
piece with the idea that
it doesn't take itself
too seriously. Close
attention should be paid
to staccato notes, making
sure not to play them too
short and clipped,
keeping in mind that a
staccato quarter note
should have the length of
an eighth note and not
the length of a sixteenth
note. Although the piece
is a march, it needn't
conform to any strict
interpretation of what a
march should be. Some of
the tongued eighth-note
passages may need to be
double-tongued, depending
on tempo, using the
Dig-A-Duck method. For
instance at m. 34 the
repeated eighth notes
might be tongued
dig-a-da-duck,
dig-a-duck, da dot dot.
Slurred eighth-note
passages should follow
the curve of the line,
getting slightly louder
as notes ascend and
slightly softer as they
descend. Measure 39
through m. 51 will have a
somewhat chaotic feel, so
go with the flow! The
sparsely orchestrated
passage at m. 68 is
understated--perhaps a
little spacey in keeping
with our theme--and not
to be overplayed until
the crescendo at m. 88,
when we return to
business as usual.
Trumpets show off again
(rarely a problem for
trumpet players) on the
D. S. back to m. 6. On
the Coda, another
disjointed-sounding
theme, again departing
from any strict
interpretation of a
march--again, making sure
that the staccatos are
not too clipped--is
followed by a repeat of
the main theme, this time
layered. Care should be
taken to balance the
entrances of the layered
instrument groups as they
enter. An exuberant final
four measures puts the
cherry on top. Percussion
can play out for the most
part, very little
subtlety required.
Overall, this piece is
meant to be FUN, for both
the performers and the
audience!. As the

2 tubas SKU:
P2.PZA90187 Composed
by Various. Edited by
Zach Collins. Arranged by
Jim Self. 2 tubas (or 2
bass trombones) or
tuba/bass trombone with
downloadable backing
track. Score and
downloadable audio.
Published by Basset Hound
Music (P2.PZA90187).
Concert Duets
is a collection of 14
arrangements of works by
prominent 18th-century
composers, mostly taken
from Trio Sonatas. Duet
11 is a Jim Self original
work in the Rococo style;
and Duets 12, 13 and 14
are arrangements of the
three-movements of the
Bach Concerto for Two
Violins. Included with
this edition are
play-along recorded
tracks by tubist Zach
Collins, who also served
as editor of the current
edition.
I created
these duets as Christmas
gifts for my tuba playing
friends, with the first
duet being arranged in
1976. All 14 of the duets
are challenging and fun
to play and are
especially effective as
concert pieces.
As
a young musician I had
the privilege of playing
duets with many of the
world’s finest
tubists including Harvey
Phillips, John Fletcher,
Bob Pallansch, Chester,
Schmitz, Dan Perantoni,
Toby Hanks, Ron Bishop,
Winston Morris and Tommy
Johnson. I learned more
about playing music in
these duo sessions than
from any other musical
activity I have ever
experienced. Duets are
powerful teaching tools
for learning and
mastering rhythm,
phrasing and intonation
and for developing
overall
musicianship.
Jim
Self:
Self (b.
1943) is a Los Angeles
free-lance musician, a
veteran of thousands of
Hollywood motion
pictures, television
shows and records, and

of the Mothershipâ€
in Close Encounters of
the Third Kind. He is
Principal Tuba/Cimbasso
with the Pacific and
Pasadena Symphonies and
the Los Angeles Opera and
Hollywood Bowl
Orchestras. Formerly he
was in The U.S. Army Band
and tuba / euphonium
professor at the
University of Tennessee.
He holds a DMA from the
USC Thornton School of
Music where he is Adjunct
Professor of Tuba and
Chamber Music. His
compositions and
arrangements include
works for solo tuba,
brass quintet, other
brass, string and
woodwind chamber music,
wind band and orchestra.
Jim has produced many
solo jazz and classical
recordings. His music and
recordings are available
from Potenza Music and

is a Yamaha Performing

NotesThere is no possible
way I could compose a
piece of music worthy of
the memory of my close
friend, Dr. David Kirby,
who died very suddenly at
an early age. Neither
could I write a piece
that could come close to
reflecting his kind
spirit, wit, personality
or talent. In fact, it
was almost impossible for
me to write anything at
all. My own grief and the
stages of my
grief kept getting in
the way. I ended up with
a setting of the
hymn-tune, Resignation.
Resigned. To the fact
that he is no longer
with us. I know he is
in a better place, but we
are not. We miss him very
much. And so, My Shepherd
Will Supply My Need seems
to speak to those of us
he left behind. I
apologize if this piece
does not reflect your
special feelings for him
or help you celebrate his
moving on. Unfortunately,
I could only put down
what I have come to
accept and hope in some
way it may speak to any
of you that knew him or
to others of you who have
also lost a close friend.
My Shepherd Will Supply
My Need. That is my
hope and my hope for
you.Although technically
very easy, this
composition requires a
maturity of musicianship
to be performed properly.
The Bb contrabass
clarinet part is integral
to the composition, but
there are cues in the
tuba part if you need
them. Â Make sure you
bring horns to the fore
at m. 53 and the low
brass at m. 59 so the
melody can be heard
without effort.
Exaggerate dynamics to
bring more emotion to the
piece. Be careful not to
diminuendo too soon near
the end or it will be
difficult to diminish
even further at the very
end, where the lone
clarinetist holds over a
couple of measures,
fading into nothing. I
hope your students will
enjoy this piece and take
from it a greater
appreciation for the way
making music can express
feelings. $13.00 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 1 to 2 weeks | | |

Belvidere Park in the
summer of 2017. We had
recently moved to
Belvidere, Illinois, and
a nice selling point was
the close proximity to
the park. That summer, I
often took my oldest
daughter on morning bike
rides through the park,
and the piece really took
shape on those bike
rides. My hope was to
paint the beauty and
majesty of the park in a
work for developing
bands. I wrote
