Acclaimed French composer Albert Roussel is known today for his famous pupils Erik Satie and Edgar Varèse as well as for his own marvelous works. Composed specifically for the famed Goldman Band and premiered in 1933 inNew York City A Glorious Day is an invigorating work written in a modified overture format of fast-slow-fast. Mark Fonder's faithful transcription is an important addition to the literature for contemporary wind bands.(6:10)

Joueurs de flûte op. 27 for Flute and Piano-The stimulus for this work composed in 1924 was given by the French flautist Louis Fleury who also gave the first performance of the work. As suggested by the title the four single movements are dedicated to particularflautists yet not real people but imaginary ones in mythology religion and literature. “Pan” “Tityre” “Krishna” and “Monsieur de la Péjaudie” (a character in anovel by Henri de Régnier) are the individual titles in the composition which is a loose type of Sonatine. The specific cast of the pieces is given by the sophisticated rhythm and striking harmony. It is fitting that thischarming work has recently been enjoying increasing popularity.
