Fanfare for Billy-It is a tradition at Marlow High School Oklahoma that the band members’ parents host a Band Banquet every May at which the senior members of the band present a gift to the band director as a token of gratitude for his year’s work. In 2009 clarinet player Brenna Hensley had the idea to commission a new piece from composer Philip Sparke to present to band director Billy Daniel which would be played at the Spring Concert later that month. Salute to a Hero was the result.The piece opens with a decorated fanfare played on cornets and trombones and after a short bridge passage this reappears played by the full band. A central lyrical section brings a mood of calm utilisingdifferent brass colours before the fanfare returns to close the work.

Break-Dance is an obvious next of kin to the two Clarinet trios Vox In Rama and Tattoo For Three. This piece however combines the roaring despair of the first trio with the twisted rhythmical display of the latter. The title of course is a reference to the modern street-dance electric boogie but the very music itself takes the naming most literally indeed: formally and rhythmically after a straightforward head-on opening it breaks into isolated jagged fragments winding up in a bouncing piano cadenza. Albeit not an obvious piano concerto the piano part hovers in the front line the same way the horizontal guy ringing himself on the pavement is doubtless aneye-catcher to passers-by. The springy 'body-language' that kicks off the piece suddenly stiffens and freezes into hard-edged blocks and the real 'dance of breaks' emerges into focus. Break-dance is commissioned by and dedicated to Yvar Mikhashoff and Spectrum. Arranged for 2 Trumpets 3 Trombones and Piano.

The Yiddish word ‘Klezmer’ has been derived from the Old Hebrew words ‘Kley’ (tool instrument) and ‘Zemer’ (song singing making music).Klezmer is the traditional music of Jews from Eastern Europe.Yiddish musicians (Klezmorim) were regularly invited to come and play at Yiddish weddings as well as several other Jewish celebrations and festive occasions. Despite its close connection with traditional Eastern European folk music Klezmer music has succeeded in preserving its distinctive Jewish character. ‘Klezmer Discovery’ is a voyage of discovery through the richly varied music of the Jewish people from Eastern Europe.The introduction consists of a number of motives from differenttraditional melodies (a Mitzve Tenzel and L’cha Dodi) followed by a melody in 3/8th time (Kandel’s Hora). This dance melody originally came from Bessarabia (present-day Moldavia) and was taken along to America by Jewish musicians round 1900. Subsequently ‘Der Terk in Amerika’ a composition by famous clarinet player Naftule Brandwein can be heard. A number of fast cheerful dance melodies (bulgars) form the finale of ‘Klezmer Discovery’ (Lebedyk un Freylekh Lomir sich iberbetn and Sherele).

Adventure Land was commissioned by Clermont Communauté (which includes the city and suburbs of Clermont-Ferrand) and the CREA (the directors of the local music schools and conservatoires). This work was the opening piece of a show combining orchestra, choir and actors, which was co-written by the author and producer David Bulcourt. The story takes place in the city of Clermont-Ferrand, which an explorer discovers through a series of riddles and adventures. Adventure Land is written in the form of a symphonic march which features a slow and pleasant passage in the middle of the work. The result is a dynamic and playful piece, similar to the style that one might find in cartoons or animated films.
