With the Schicksalslied Brahms created a very personal interpretation on the theme of fate in a timeless piece of music that will not fail to impress in concert hall or church. The new edition is a modern Urtext edition of the score based on current editorial principles. It is based not only on the composer's personal copy of the first edition as the primary source, but also on the engraving manuscript which was long thought to have been lost. Thus the composer's handwritten corrections made in this manuscript could be incorporated in the new edition, as well as a revision in this bilingual edition of the English translation of Friedrich Holderlin's dramatic poem. Score and part available separately - see item CA.1039900.

Ms. Foster’s deep faith and musicology are amplified in one another to a profound degree. Her gifts and skills in performance, choir direction and congregational singing are exceptional. The goal of her work, however, is worship, and the songs in this collection easily invite us there. —The Reverend Msgr. Eddie Tolentino, Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Silver Spring, Maryland As You Go, Tell the World • Go Tell it on the Mountain • God Is a Wonder to My Soul • He Arose / They Crucified My Savior • I Know the Lord Has Laid His Hands on Me • I Will Bless the Lord • Is There Any Room in Your Heart for Jesus? • Jesus • Oh, Freedom • Take Me to the Water • We Are One • What a Friend We Have in Jesus.

In Charles Gounod's L'absent, composed in 1873, the absent one asks at night time whether the beloved remembers him in the light of the moon and at the sound of the evening prayer bells. These art songs were originally composed not for chamber choir, but for solo voice and piano. Denis Rouger has carefully adapted them to suit the requirements and expressive possibilities offered by a larger ensemble, without losing the any of the qualities of the original in the process. Each part in the choir has a melodic line drawn from the harmonic and rhythmic framework. In the process, the variety and refinement of the choral language combines with an enormous flexibility in form and expression, as French melodies or German art song demand from a soloist and pianist. The songs have been recorded by the figure humaine chamber choir on the CD Kennst du das Land ... (Carus 83.495).

Musical theater fans will be all ears for this barn-burner from Broadway's Shucked. It's a truncated version of the a-maize-ing opening number. Sing about the world's most useful crop in a hilarious three-minute arrangement that hits all the highlights of the corny crowd-pleaser. Kicks off with a theatrical duet, breaks into a bouncy two-beat, includes a kernel of a kickline, plus some full gospel sangin' at the end---wow!

Telemann’s passion oratorio “Der Tod Jesu†was composed in 1754-55, roughly at the same time as the same-named highly regarded work by Carl Heinrich Graun. Both pieces are settings of the same libretto by Karl Wilhelm Ramler. In this late work, Telemann consciously contrasts the carefully crafted recitatives with musically reduced solemn choruses to obtain an emotional reading of the Passion text. This vocal score complements the Urtext score of this moving passion oratorio which is published as part of the “Georg Philipp Telemann Musical Worksâ€. The complete orchestral material is available on hire.

The Bach contemporary Christian August Jacobi is among those composers who made a lasting impression among 18th century Middle German composers, since the influence of the Thomaskantor himself was limited primarily to Leipzig. Jacobi's cantatas are richly varied and they not too difficult to perform. Five of the six movements of the Christmas cantata Also hat Gott die Welt geliebet for soli, choir, strings and basso continuo are based on Luther's Christmas chorale Vom Himmel hoch, da komm ich her, which give the work a traditional character (the text of the first movement is based on the Gospel of St. John). The richly varied instrumentation and alternation between choral movements and duets by the soloists bring to the sound of the cantata a variety which will also be enhanced by the use of the harp (ad libitum). Score and parts available separately - see item CA.1036900.

This little-known tune provides great material for a hymn anthem. It's a sending forth text, scored with the men always echoing the text of the women at one measure. First, in canon, then in counterpoint. Mixed meters are introduced in the third and fourth stanzas, and the final stanza expands the score to SAT over echoing bass. Lots of excitement here. This edition may be performed as a suite of three: Lord, Enthron'd in Heav'nly Spendor, Look unto Abraham, and Know That the Lord Is God. The trumpet in C part is interlined in the score.

Joseph Haydn's Stabat Mater, written in 1767, was the first church work the composer wrote after entering the service of Prince Esterhazy in Eisenstadt. Unlike almost all his other sacred works, it soon circulated in numerous copies and established Haydn's reputation as the leading vocal composer of his day. This edition is based on three original copies of parts, which are regarded as being particularly close to the (missing) autograph manuscript because of the date they were made and the reliable transmission of the music text. As so, this great, moving setting of the Stabat Mater is now newly available in a modern, scholarly edition. The complete performance material is available on sale. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5199100.
