In 2014, Chanticleer commissioned me to make a new arrangement of the Hungarian-Romani folk song Jarba, Mare Jarba for their 2014 touring program. Passed down orally through the Romani communities, this beautiful folk song, with text in a language called Beas (beh-osh), speaks of a deep longing to visit one's homeland, a place where the singer can never return. Chanticleer consists of twelve men whose vocal ranges span from low bass to high soprano, equivalent to the range of a mixed choir of women and men. I composed slow sections of original material to represent the singers' longing to return home; these are interspersed with the folk song's traditional fast sections. The incorporated shouts and calls in the score are typically found in the performance of Central European folk songs. I hope you enjoy singing this new version of Jarba, Mare Jarba that contains all of the vigor and excitement of the Chanticleer version. PERFORMANCE NOTES All spoken sounds (indicated by x noteheads) should be performed by individuals. Feel free to elaborate with more sounds of your own in the tradition of Eastern European folk music. If the piece is memorized, feel free to experiment with clapping on the off-beats of m. 93 to the end. I am grateful for the opportunity to introduce this new collection. The one-word title, Onward! is a call anyone can respond to, at any age. To quote Scottish singer Sir Harry Lauder, we can all 'keep right on to the end of the road'. Most of the hymns were written between 2012 and 2015, some of which are hymn-style versions of biblical psalms or significant portions of a psalm, or in response to a verse of scripture. Some older texts have also been included, paired here for the first time with recently crafted tunes.
This collection also includes a previously unpublished song I co-wrote with my wife, Susan Heafield, a United Methodist pastor and musician. Praise Partners, our joint musical venture, has released two collections: We Can Be Messengers (Ref PP001) and Tell the Good News! (Ref PP003), both distributed by Stainer & Bell.

During his time as Master of the Queen's Music, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies wrote a new carol for Her Majesty the Queen each Christmas. Ave, Plena Gracia , written for Christmas 2009, was the fifth in this series after An Heavenly Song, Wonder Tidings, The Yule-tide Bell and Kings and Shepherds all of which are published in the Schott Royal Collection.First performed in St. James's Palace by the choir of the Chapel Royal on the Epiphany at the end of the 2009/2010 Christmas period, Ave, Plena Gracia is a short and traditional Latin setting that would be perfect for amateur choirs looking for new repertoire.

Charles Gounod, the 200th anniversary of whose birth falls in 2018, is known above all for his operas - Faust, Sapho, Romeo et Juliette, etc. But throughout his life Gounod was also a very religious man. As winner of the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1839, he spent an extended period in the Holy City and subsequently devoted several years exclusively to writing sacred music. For a time he even thought of becoming a priest and signed his letters Abbe Ch. Gounod. As well as several masses - including the famous St Cecilia Mass - he composed numerous smaller works for various scorings for use in the liturgy and other church services. This collection contains 20 smaller sacred motets for 4-6-part mixed choir with organ or piano accompaniment, mostly ad libitum.

Since an invitation to the Emerald Isle, Harald Genzmer (1909-2007) has been fascinated with the local tradition and culture. Therefore, after the songs 'Irische Harfe', he wrote another cycle for mixed choir at a ripe old age: 'Lieder einer Insel'. In three parts with ten choral settings altogether, the composer tells stories from the mythology of the Emerald Isle in the Irish poems, in the texts of old and modern lyricists, describes emotions, desires, laments: from 'Weissagung Cathbads' to 'Lobgesang der Gerechten', from the bright 'Monch und seinem Lieblingskater' to the sad lament 'Das Lied in einem Madchenherzen', from the tender 'Anrufung des Friedens' to the contemplate 'Abendgebet'. The freely tonal settings range from simple, chordal-homophonic via declamatory to expressive. Of intermediate difficulty, these choral miniatures are suitable not only for professional ensembles but also for ambitious amateur choirs.

The Magnificat shows the typical personal style of the composer Gunther Martin Gottsche, who was inspired by the colorful harmonics of French Impressionism as well as by elements of jazz music. He has given equal consideration to both the vocal line and the ease of execution as well as an understanding for the musical events and a comprehensible interpretation of the text. The work, which was revised at the beginning of 2016, is based on an earlier work commissioned for the Dresden Kreuzkirche. A version with organ accompaniment (instead of orchestra) is also available. Score available separately - see item CA.2721000.

Commissioned by the Maryknoll Community to celebrate its centenary of papal approval in 2011, Missa ad Gentes was composed with a particular vision – to create a Mass setting with the 2010 revised English texts representing both Maryknoll’s United States heritage as well as the diverse cultures in which Maryknoll missioners serve in Central and South America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.  With each piece of the Mass, Fr. Joncas honors the musical heritage of a different culture, creating a truly unique setting celebrating the Church’s diversity. The title, meaning “Mass ‘to the peoples’†draws on the text of the Second Vatican Council’s document on missionary activities. “It is my hope that the Missa ad Gentes will assist English-speaking Roman Rite Catholics to worship with new liturgical texts, faithful to their heritage but enriched by the great diversity of languages and cultures that make up the Church Catholic.†-Michael Joncas Keyboard accompaniment and guitar chords are printed in the edition.
