Hail Lovely and Pure is a setting for a cappella chorus of a short poem from The Second Shepherds' Play, an English mystery play written in the 15th century by The Wakeï¬eld Master of Northern England. Mystery (or miracle) plays were a form of medieval drama that represented Biblical subjects such as the Creation and the Last Judgment. The text consists of the ï¬rst lines spoken by the shepherds when they entered the stable to celebrate the birth of Jesus. My brother David C. K. McClelland (1947-1976) translated this fragment from the original Middle English and made a small calligraphic version of it which I discovered among his papers. David probably intended to make a larger, more elaborate manuscript of the poem, though if he did so it has not been found.SATB Chorus, a cappella Duration: 13'30 Composed: 2011 Published by: WMC Music (BMI).

Pacific Dreams describes the experience of Miguel, a traveling composer from Spain who, feeling somewhat alienated from his homeland, is wandering through an area of Sydney known as The Rocks. At a small outdoor market in a typical street of this oldcolonial neighbourhood, he discovers a print of William DeShazos painting Pacific Dreams Portrayed in the painting is the surf of one of the exotic islands in the Pacific. Next, with the impressive Sydney Harbour Bridge looming over the narrowstreets of The Rocks, he envisions sultry Pacific beaches. Suddenly a theme he once composed about the lakes in Japan comes to him. Is it the Asian influences present in cosmopolitan Sydney that bring this theme to mind? Or perhaps the waters aroundSydney, over which he could sail to Tahiti? He is uncertain. Could this same theme be used to create a new composition about his feelings for the metropolis Sydney? How then to work his Pacific Dreams into the mix? Miguel is certainly no fan ofHawaiian music. Mayby he could use the vocabularies of islands like Hawaii and Tahiti, their beautiful vowel combinations being sung ad libitum by a mixed choir. With these ideas and his newly purchased print of Pacific Dreams, he boards the Metroat Circular Quay. He has a final glimpse of the harbour and the Sydney Opera House as the train races into the ground. On to the hotel! To work! He must compose!Maestoso : Miguel is impressed as he gazes upon the Sydney Harbour Bridge. And yet, hewants to go away from this city. Away, to an exotic island in the Pacific.Steady Rock : In the Rocks, musicians are playing at a square. Miguel basks in the atmosphere but at the same time he is fantasizing about Hawaii and Tahiti.Andante Lamentoso :In his hotel room, Miguel is feeling sad and lonely in this big city. He takes comfort in his Pacific Dreams.Allegro : Miguel boards the boat that takes him from Darling Harbour to Circular Quay. In his mind he is traveling on to Hawaii. Or is ithome, where the bolero is playing? He is pulled back to reality by the skyline of Sydney.

Using the “Ave Maria†text as a prayer for all humans in our life's voyage, the tune Ms. Rugen creates sounds reminiscent of an Irish folk song. Her harmonies are 21st century and ever so sensitively displayed. A sense of being on a 17th century vessel that is crossing the ocean to new lands permeates through the music. It is transporting. This is a lovely concert selection for advanced high school, college and community choirs. Medium in difficulty.

Contains four pieces: 1. Fifty-Second Street Swing, 2. Remembering Billie, 3. On the Road, 4. Take Five. The following is a remembrance by the composer: Under the picture in my high school yearbook it said, Silence is golden. Lost my diploma on the way home from graduation but I knew what I wanted to be: A Big Band Pianist. Started hanging out in Manhattan on Fifty Second Street. There were seven jazz clubs in one block, between Sixth and Seventh. Couldnt drink at seventeen, so just nursed cokes at a dollar each. My salary was twenty a week. Sat by the great Art Tatum, the incredible blind pianist. My teacher accompanied Billie at the Onyx. Later, Dizzy and Bird appeared on the scene. This wonderful year passed, and I swapped my piano for a rifle. The Marines had plans for me. Where would I find a piano? Would I still be able to play? But, find them I did: in the States and even on some Pacific Islands. Sometimes you could even recognize what you were playing. Sometimes, had to kick someone off the bench. I told Kim Rich, the poet, my stories and somehow she made these wonderful lyrics with just a few phone conversations. Hey! Im immortal!!!

The few works which Henri Duparc composed and left to posterity display a deep preoccupation with grief and pain, coupled with a great fear of loneliness. His Chanson triste (Sad Song), composed in 1868 or 1869, was one such work. Duparc treasured it so much that he made an orchestral version of it in 1912. He set texts by contemporary French poets such as Charles Baudelaire, Sully Prudhomme, and Henri Cazalis, who wrote under the pseudonym Jean Lahor. Denis Rouger, founder and director of the figure humaine chamber choir, has arranged art songs for solo voice and piano for his ensemble, in the process carefully adapting these to the needs and expressive possibilities offered by a larger ensemble. Music edition for the successful CD Kennst du das Land... (Carus 83.495).

Alan has crafted a superb arrangement of this treasured hymn that first appeared in the Sacred Harp Hymn Book of 1844. After a free introduction by choir and trumpet, the first two stanzas introduce the tune in strict tempo while the trumpet outlines melodic fragments above the chorus. In each succeeding verse we find imaginative varied choral textures with trumpet prominently displayed.

Program note:Looking Up is a piece for large chorus and orchestra, and is in three sections, played without pause. In the 16th century, a variety of psalters in meter were printed in England, with the idea of making psalm-singing something that could happen easily at home, with the rhyming meter being an aid to memorization. These translations are wonderful exercises in brevity and sometimes clumsy rhymemaking, and were usually prefaced by a lengthy explanation as to their merits; the title of one of the first such volumes in English is: The Psalter of Dauid newely translated into Englysh metre in such sort that it maye the more decently, and wyth more delyte of the mynde, be reade and songe of al men. I thought it would be appropriate to set one of these introductions, and the first section of Looking Up sets the preface to Thomas Ravenscroft's psalter (1621), in which he writes: “The singing of Psalmes (assay the Doctors) comforteth the sorrowfull, pacifieth the angry, strengtheneth the weake, humbleth the proud, gladdeth the humble, stirres up the slow, reconcileth enemies, lifteth up the heart to heavenly things, and uniteth the Creature to his Creator.”It begins meditatively, but eventually grows agitated and fervent, with a vision of the “quire of Angels and Saints” “redoubling anddescanting” - an ecstatic and terrifying vision of the skies opening up. Ravenscroft then encourages the use of instrumental musicfor worship, at which point, a long, acrobatic orchestral interlude with jagged edges antagonizes the choir, who sing a kind of private, anxious meditation on two pitches. One of the most delicious biblical texts is an Apocryphal prayer known as the Benedicite or the Prayer of the Three Children (the same who were rescued by an angel after King Nebuchadnezzar tried to have them burnt in an oven for not bowing to his image). The text is repetitive, obsessive, and a gift to composers - each line is an invocation of an element of the natural world, followed by the phrase, “blesse ye the Lord, praise him & magnify him for ever.” In Looking Up, the setting begins with three solo voices, and then grows to include the whole choir, itemizing the whole of creation. The idea that these boys are spared from the furnace and then five minutes later are saying, “O ye the fire and warming heate, blesse ye the Lord...” has always felt very loaded to me, and the orchestra plays with this conflict between joyful praise and a more terrible (in the 16th-century sense) awefor the divine. The text for the third, and shortest, section is taken from Christopher Smart's (1722-1771) A Song to David, purportedly written during his confinement in a mental asylum. This ode to King David points out how David, as the author of some of the Psalms, observes the whole world from the “clustering spheres” to the “nosegay in the vale.&rdquo.

The Out from the Shadows Choral Series brings you “Summer Is Gone,†a new setting of British poet Christina Rosetti's 1862 poem “Bitter for Sweet.†The composer, Samuel Coleridge Taylor, displays superb control of text painting and dynamics, creating vocal lines as natural as speech. In perfect harmony with Rosetti's text, falling chromatic figures tossed back and forth among voice parts create an inescapable sense of decay and sorrow. Taylor's harmonic rhythm conveys the latent impression of time stretching and constricting. A truly masterful work, this piece makes for a great festival or competition performance. A fun challenge for an accomplished chamber or larger choir, and a memorable addition to any concert. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) was an English-born composer and conductor who hailed from an English and African musical family. After discovering his inherent musical ability, Coleridge-Taylor's family arranged for him to study at the Royal College of Music under composition professor Charles Villiers Stanford. After completing his degree, Coleridge-Taylor was appointed a professor at the Crystal Palace School of Music and became the conductor of the Croydon Conservatoire Orchestra. With his compositions, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor sought to draw from traditional African music and integrate it into the classical tradition, in a similar fashion to Brahms and Dvorak with Hungarian and Bohemian music. He was a prolific composer and a well-respected conductor in England and America, even touring in America and being received at the White House by President Theodore Roosevelt. His most celebrated work was his cantata Hiawatha's Wedding Feast. On his death, close friend and poet Alfred Noyes said, “Too young to die: his great simplicity, his happy courage in an alien world, his gentleness, made all that knew him love him.â€.

Choral literature played a major role in Adolphus Hailstork’s early inspirations, as he grew up singing in choirs. While in college, he created this beautifully plaintive madrigal, setting the words of Orlando Gibbons’ familiar “The Silver Swan.†The result is a strikingly powerful new setting, a perfect partner to the iconic work from the Renaissance, and an early glimpse of Hailstork’s magnificent career filled with choral and vocal music. THE SILVER SWAN is in a traditional tonal language and scored for a cappella S.A.T.B. chorus without divisi, making it easily within reach of choirs of all levels.

In addition to his vast output of German poetry, Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) composed nearly 400 poems in French. His poems on roses struck me as especially charming, filled with gorgeous lyricism, deftly crafted and elegant in their imagery. These exquisite poems are primarily light, joyous and playful, and the musical settings are designed to enhance these characteristics and capture the delicate beauty and sensuousness of the poetry. Distinct melodic and harmonic materials recur throughout the cycle, especially between Rilke''s poignant 'Contre qui, rose' (set as a wistful nocturne) and his moving 'La rose complète.' The final piece, 'Dirait-on,' is composed as a tuneful chanson populaire, or folksong, that weaves together two melodic ideas first heard in fragmentary form in preceding movements. 'Les Chansons des Roses' was premiered and recorded in 1993 by Portland, Oregon ''s celebrated chamber choir, Choral Cross-Ties, conducted by Bruce Browne. The complete cycle has been widely performed since then and also recorded by the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Los Angeles Chamber Singers, Nordic Chamber Choir and tonight's performers, the Donald Brinegar Singers. The Choral Collection Psalms contains over 50 settings for mixed unaccompanied choir from six centuries. It is a true treasure-trove of compositions in various styles and levels of difficulty: with some unknown new discoveries and some classics of the choral literature, the selection will enrich both worship and concerts. The 150 psalms of the Old Testament express rejoicing, joy, confidence, but also lament, grief, anger, and even doubt. The psalms are present throughout Christianity and Judaism to this day, and are sung worldwide in countless settings. The Choral Collection Psalms displays the whole stylistic and linguistic variety ranging from contemplative, simple Anglican chant through Russian Orthodox homophony to virtuoso motets with jazzy echoes. The linguistic spectrum is equally broad: English, French, German (some with added singable English translation), Estonian, Icelandic and, of course, Latin psalm settings are represented, as well as works in Church Slavonic and Hebrew (both accompanied by transliterations and a singable German text). The foreword (German / English) offers many hints regarding the performance of the psalm settings, and a detailed index will help with choosing appropriate pieces for the liturgical occasion according to the Anglican, Protestant, or Catholic calendar. Over the last ten years editor Stefan Schuck has performed two psalm compositions every week in his NoonSong series in Berlin. From the resulting 800 works, he has selected the most interesting compositions arranged according to level of difficulty. The choral director's volume includes a CD with recordings of selected works, sung by sirventes and conducted by the editor, which will help with learning and rehearsing the repertoire. over 50 psalm settings from six centuries for worship and concert use stylistic variety and mixed levels of difficulty: from Anglican Chant to virtuoso motets for four-part mixed choir, some with organ/piano accompaniment transliterations and German singing texts help with practising cross-cultural repertoire liturgical classification of all settings for Catholic, Protestant, and Anglican lectionary includes many unknown jewels such as Boze, Boze moj (Cesar Cui), Jauschew be seser eljaun (David Rubin), and Schubert's setting of Psalm 23 in the first Hebrew version CD recording (sirventes berlin, cond.
