Four poems sharing a common motif of 'Night' provide the texts for my choral cycle Nocturnes the American Choral Directors Association's commissioned work for its 2005 national convention. For Rilke's atmospheric ?Sanuit d'ete ? several melodic themes are supported by dense colorful harmonies in both the choral and piano parts leading to a climactic section where all are combined and stated simultaneously. Neruda's ?Soneto de laNoche ? from his Cien Sonetos de Amor speaks of an eternal love that transcends death while reaffirming life. My a cappella setting of this gorgeous poem is predominantly quiet serene and folk-like utilizing directharmonies accompanying long lyrical vocal lines. Agee's wondrous ?Sure on this Shining Night? is set much like a song from the American musical theater a genre for which I have held a life-long esteem. This title is taken from the compilation French Songs And Choruses For Mixed-Voice Choir (NOV165198) Debussy's Nuit d'étoiles arranged for SATB. One of Debussy's first published works Nuit d'étoiles features many of the characteristics that can be found in later Debussy compositions but is more traditional in it's melodic construction and structure.

No other work by Mozart is so enshrouded in myth as his final composition the D-minor Requiem. Mozart died before its completion and the missing sections had to be added by others. The many handwritten copies circulated after his death added to the corruption of the text by contributing errors of their own. Now Peters is publishing a new urtext edition of this staple of the choral repertoire edited by David Black. The edition relies on Mozart’s composition and the traditional completion by Franz Xaver Süssmayr. For the first time however it incorporates sources previously unavailable to earlier editions including the Neue Mozart-Ausgabe.

Jan Dismas Zelenka's Te Deum in D for SATB and Orchestra.Two settings of the Te Deum by Jan Dismas Zelenka have been survived: the Te Deum in D major ZWV 145 of ca. 1724 and the present Te Deum a due cori in D major ZWV 146 which was composed in 1731. Whereas the Te Deum ZWV 145 is scored for five voices (?soli e tutti?) and an orchestra including two trumpets and timpani the setting of the Te Deum a due cori which includes five soloists and two four-part choirs as well as four trumpets and timpani and soloistic flauti traversi is magnificently realized in a more decisive manner. The large solemn scoring suggests that the work was composed for aworship service on the occasion of the birth of the Electoral Princess Maria Josepha of Saxony.

Bach's Magnificat In D was originally composed in 1723 for the Christmas Vespers in Leipzig with Christmas specific texts that would be later removed to make the work suitable for year-round performance. The work can be divided into twelve parts grouped into three movements beginning with an aria and ending with a fugal chorus. This edition is edited by Neil Jenkins for SATB with a Piano accompaniment. In the original key of D.
