Variations on a Double is a real musical leviathan: almost an hour long, it is a sound-monstrosity that makes exceptional demands of the performers, and is the product of an unusual degree of fusion of the clarinet with the piano. Composed in 2005 for Csaba Klenyan and Gabor Csalog, the work interprets the meaning of the musical +double+ in an unconventional way: in it there is not a union of two independent instrumental characters, each with its individual identity - as in a grandiose sonata; instead, its artistic form tends in exactly the opposite direction. A single, monodically conceived unit of musical material passes over and over again through the doubling; they do not form two parts, yet do not unite in unison, but present the split face of a single endless - fragmented and episodic - monologue, like Siamese twins. Beware, this is only for the musically mature!

Summer Solstice is a 19-minute concerto in three movements, composed for solo clarinet with a colorfully-textured string orchestra. The piano reduction is comfortably voiced for recital use. Dorff's joy in writing for his own instrument is readily heard in the warm cantabile writing and gracefully idiomatic passagework. Drawing inspiration from the elegance of Mozart's concerto and the rhythmic grit of Copland's, Dorff's concerto is a true hybrid of jazz-inspired language with classical form and counterpoint. The Philadelphia Inquirer has written, Summer Solstice is light without being insubstantial, melodic without being obvious. It has an invariably American sound. Orchestral score and parts are available on rental. Full score is also available for sale as study score (416-41604) or large score (416-41604L)._____________________________________Text from the scanned back cover:Summer Solstice (Concerto for Clarinet and Strings)The Philadelphia Inquirer has written “Summer Solstice is light without being insubstantial, melodic without being obvious. “French composer and conductor, Paul Bonneau (1918-1995) published his Suite for Clarinet and Piano in 1944, and it remains popular to this day. Bonneau's composing was highly versatile, ranging from over fifty film scores, operettas, songs and other pieces for woodwind, including a concerto. His Suite is highly virtuosic, made up of four movements; 1) Improvisation, 2) Dance of Demons, 3) Complaint, and 4) Playfulness. The work contains typically French characteristics including chromaticism and difficult technical passages. All these elements combined make for an enjoyable and challenging piece for clarinetists.&rdquo.

Raymond Gallois Montbrun (1918-1994) composed his Concertstuck for Clarinet and Piano in 1946, two years after he won the Grand Prix de Rome. His Violin Concerto, Japan Symphony and Concertstuck for Clarinet and Piano remain popular to this day. Concertstuck for Clarinet and Piano begins with a virtuosic clarinet cadenza, covering a wide range on the instrument. The piece remains virtuosic throughout, with many changes of tempo, articulation, dynamics, rhythms, key signatures and time signatures throughout. As a suitable and varied piece for the repertoire of advanced clarinetists, Gallois Montbrun's Concertstuck for Clarinet and Piano cannot be missed.

This work, which was written shortly after the Trumpet Sonata and the Five Pieces For Piano, was first performed by Georgina Dobree and the composer at the 1957 Darmstadt Festival. The score was subsequently lost, but was rediscovered by Kevin Corner in 1983. 'This is a dramatic, emphatic and at times extravagant piece. The first movement is a Moderato reaching through wide-flung clarinet lines and keen piano gestures to a great climax near the end. Then comes a quick movement, a kind of demonic scherzo, including a cadenza for the clarinettist. The finale is an Adagio that gradually achieves a sort of simplicity, though not before exceedingly testing times for both players. Duration c. 25mins.

These Sonatas were written as part of Jean-Xavier Lefèvre’s Méthode for the Clarinet. They are great stepping stones to the more difficult clarinet master works by Mozart and Weber and are also invaluable first pieces for those studying period performance on the classical clarinet. They retain Lefèvre’s original notation for clarinet and the bass lines are transposed down a tone so the Sonatas are playable on the B flat clarinet. The right hand of the piano parts have been realised from a single unfigured bass line probably intended for the cello. The piano parts are designed to be stylistic, complementary to the clarinet line, satisfying to play and occasionally challenging.
