Brahms, Reger and the consequences Adolph Busch had already emigrated to the United States when he wrote the A-Major Clarinet Sonata . Shortly thereafter he revised the work once again until it was completed in its final form in spring 1941. Busch, a brilliant and sought-after solo violinist of the 1920s and 30s, concertized regularly in England and had become friends there with the clarinetist Reginald Kells, to whom he also dedicated the piece in three movements. Demanding in its musical idiom and no doubt inspired by the expressive playing of his friend, the sonata evidences a strong proximity to the works of Brahms and Reger. This work, which was written shortly after the Trumpet Sonata and the Five Pieces For Piano, was first performed by Georgina Dobree and the composer at the 1957 Darmstadt Festival. The score was subsequently lost, but was rediscovered by Kevin Corner in 1983. 'This is a dramatic, emphatic and at times extravagant piece. The first movement is a Moderato reaching through wide-flung clarinet lines and keen piano gestures to a great climax near the end. Then comes a quick movement, a kind of demonic scherzo, including a cadenza for the clarinettist. The finale is an Adagio that gradually achieves a sort of simplicity, though not before exceedingly testing times for both players. Duration c. 25mins.

The two sonatas of Johannes Brahms's op. 120 are widely hailed as crowning points of the repertoire for clarinet and piano. Moreover, in the version for viola and piano arranged by Brahms himself, they rank among the most frequently played viola works of the 19th century. They far surpass in compositional substance the relatively few original sonatas written for these instrumentations during the same period.Of the two fellow works, the Sonata No. 2 in E flat major is the more accessible. Diverging from the classical-romantic tradition, Brahms used the key of E flat major here not to express the heroic or monumental, but to obtain lyrical, chiefly restrained characterizations. The serenade-like beauty of the principal theme, which opens the sonata, has always been particularly admired. In his review of the world premiere, the renowned Viennese music critic Eduard Hanslick, a friend of Brahms's, raves with the words it was as if it had fallen from the Heavens. The closing set of variations also follows with gentle gracefulness this lyrical character. However, the middle movement, with its tempestuous outer sections in E flat minor and the hymnic trio in B major provides a passionate and serious contrast, which allows the flanking idyll to unfold its beauties all the more insistently.

Born in Switzerland, Jean Xavier Lefevre (1763-1829) was a sought-after clarinetist and one of the first clarinet professors at the Paris Conservatory. He is still known today for his Clarinet School (1802), which became a standard work in France and beyond. From this textbook comes the popular Sonata no. 1 with its catchy melody that encourages light playfulness. The piece is graded hereas level 2. Also available: Sonata No. 2 g minor (SE 1039). Lefevre wrote the piece originally for the then common C-Clarinet. For use in the classroom, this edition omits the transposition ofthe clarinet part into the B tuning. The accompanying bass voice of the original was transferred to the piano and supplemented with some suggestions on dynamics and articulation. Hints and tips from publisher Rudolf Mauz (Die frohliche Klarinette) offer students assistance in the preparation of the work. Variations on a Double is a real musical leviathan: almost an hour long, it is a sound-monstrosity that makes exceptional demands of the performers, and is the product of an unusual degree of fusion of the clarinet with the piano. Composed in 2005 for Csaba Klenyan and Gabor Csalog, the work interprets the meaning of the musical +double+ in an unconventional way: in it there is not a union of two independent instrumental characters, each with its individual identity - as in a grandiose sonata; instead, its artistic form tends in exactly the opposite direction. A single, monodically conceived unit of musical material passes over and over again through the doubling; they do not form two parts, yet do not unite in unison, but present the split face of a single endless - fragmented and episodic - monologue, like Siamese twins. Beware, this is only for the musically mature!
