Nordanvind is a tour de force symphonic rhapsody that is built on three Scandinavian folk songs. Composer Carl Strommen has composed these Viking-influenced melodies into a concert setting that brings out all of the history of the Scandinavian people. The piece is at times bold and aggressive, at other times beautiful. Carl employs all of the instrumental colors of the concert band to create a new work for more advanced ensembles. Modern Scandinavians are descendants of the Vikings, an adventuresome people who were known for their love of the sea, their naval prowess, and as fierce fighters . The Scandinavian Vikings were warriors from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden who traded, raided and settled in various parts of Europe, Russia, the North Atlantic islands, and the northeastern coast of North America .Starting around 1850, over one million Swedes left their homeland for the United States in search of religious freedom and open farm land . Augustana College was founded in 1860 by graduates of Swedish universities and is located on the Mississippi River in Rock Island, Illinois . Home of the “Vikings,†Augustana College is the oldest Swedish- American institution of higher learning in the United States . This powerful and lively piece takes inspiration from Swedish history and from Swedish folk songs and hymns .Havsdrake (Dragon of the Sea)The Nordanvind or “North Wind†blows a cold wind during a journey of a group of courageous Viking rowers . The “Dragon-ship†or long ships designed for raiding and war was a sophisticated, fast ship able to navigate in very shallow water . To musically portray these magnificent seafaring vessels, the director is encouraged to use an Ocean Drum (or a rain stick) during the introduction . Wind players may consider blowing air through their instruments to suggest the North wind . Adding men’s voices to accompany the haunting low brass and percussive “rower†sounds can be helpful in creating the dark and ominous portrayal of Viking adventurers .Slangpolska efter Byss - KalleIn Sweden, a “polska†is a partner dance where the dancers spin each other (släng in Swedish “to sling or tossâ€) . Slangpolska efter Byss - Kalle is attributed to Byss-Kalle, who was a notable Swedish folk musician, specifically a nyckelharpa player . Slangpolska efter Byss - Kalle is a traditional “polska†dance song most often played on the Nyckelharpa or keyed fiddle and is commonly heard in pubs and at festive events throughout Sweden . Approximately 10,000 nyckelharpa players live in Sweden today, and the Swedish and the American Nyckelharpa Associations are dedicated to this Swedish National instrument . The director is encouraged to share video and audio examples of the nyckelharpa playing the original Slangpolska efter Byss - Kalle .Tryggare Kan Ingen Vara (Children of the Heavenly Father)Tryggare Kan Ingen Vara Is a traditional Swedish melody, possibly of German roots, and was believed to be arranged as a hymn by the Swedish hymn writer, Karolina Wilhelmina Sandell-Berg (1832–1903) . As a daughter of a Swedish Lutheran minister, she began writing poems as a teenager and is said to have written over 1,700 different texts . There are two different accounts as to the inspiration for this hymn . The first story is that Lina (as she was called) wrote the hymn to honor her father and to say thank you to him for raising her and protecting her . A second belief is of her witnessing the tragic death of her father . She and her father were on a boat, when a wave threw her father overboard . It was said that the profound effect of watching her father drown is what caused Lina to write the text to this hymn . Although this is a treasured song to people of Swedish descent everywhere, it speaks to all people about a father tending and nourishing his children, and protecting them from evil .SPS71FThe Augustana College Concert BandFounded in 1874, the Augustana Band program is one of the oldest continuously active collegiate band programs in the country . The Concert Band is one of two bands on campus and was formed more than thirty years ago . The Concert Band attracts students of every skill level and from a wide variety of majors . Students in the ensemble play a large part in choosing their music for performance, which include works from the standard repertoire, orchestral transcriptions, and the latest compositions from leading composers .Rick Jaeschke began his musical career as a clarinet player in the 1st US Army Band . He received a Bachelor of Music degree from Susquehanna University, a Masters of Music from James Madison University, and a doctorate from Columbia University in New York . He was also fortunate to study conducting with Donald Hunsburger and with Frederick Fennell .Dr . Jaeschke taught band and choir at Great Mills High School in Southern Maryland, and for fifteen years, he was the district Music Supervisor in Armonk, New York, where he taught high school concert and jazz bands, beginning band, and music technology . During that time, the music program flourished, and the high school band consistently received Gold Medals in the New York State Festivals, as well as in national, and international festivals . As a clarinet and saxophone player, Dr . Jaeschke performed in the New York metropolitan area with the Rockland Symphony Orchestra, the Putnam Symphony Orchestra, Fine Arts Symphony Orchestra, and served as the concert master for the Hudson Valley Wind Symphony .For several years, Dr . He has served on various educational boards, is a National edTPA scorer, and has presented at state, national and international music conferences . LES DJINNS was written at the request of pianist Caroline Montigny-Rémaury, though César Franck's (1822-1890) short work for piano and orchestra was instead premiered on March 15, 1885 by Louis Diémer with the Société Nationale de Musique. The piece is inspired by the poem of the same name in Victor Hugo's LES ORIENTALES, as Franck represents the idea of the mysterious and supernatural forces tearing the nocturnal sky through their passage. Franck was impressed with the virtuosic playing and interpretation of Diémer in this difficult work, which sparked a renewed interest in the piano for the composer. Concert Band/Harmonie - Grade 4 SKU: BT.DHP-0910329-010 Composed by Jan Van der Roost. Inspiration Series. Set (Score & Parts). Composed 1991. De Haske Publications #DHP 0910329-010. Published by De Haske Publications (BT.DHP-0910329-010). This quiet piece with its broad tones was originally written for brass band on request of Robert Leveugle, chairman of the composers own band: Brass Band Midden Brabant (Belgium). The direct cause was a visit to the beautiful cathedral of theEnglish city Canterbury, in which so many fine compositions sounded throughout the centuries. Later on, Jan Van der Roost rescored this piece for symphonic wind band, exploring the full richness of colours of this formation. Besides solo phrases forseveral instruments, there are some massive tutti passages making the wind orchestra sound like a majestic organ. By the way: an ad libitum organ part adds an extra richness, colour and power to this piece, making it sound even more broad andgrand.

Concert Band/Harmonie - Grade 4 SKU: BT.DHP-0971085-010 Composed by Jacob...(+)
Concert Band/Harmonie - Grade 4 SKU: BT.DHP-0971085-010 Composed by Jacob De Haan. Inspiration Series. Festive and Solemn Music. Set (Score & Parts). Composed 1997. De Haske Publications #DHP 0971085-010. Published by De Haske Publications (BT.DHP-0971085-010). Jacob de Haan was commissioned to compose this concert piece by the St. Peters Wind Symphony from Brisbane, Australia. Ross Roy is the monumental late 19th century villa where St. Peters Lutheran College was founded in 1945. The villa has always remained the school symbol. In this composition, Jacob de Haan sees the Ross Roy as a metaphor for the years spent at school (a monument in time), where one's personality is formed. So, the opening theme the artist calls the Ross Roy theme initially has monumental characteristics. The rhythmic motion, which strides along in the lower register and percussion at the beginning of the next section is typical of Tempo di Marcia. Thismovement, accompanied by repetitions of sound, is a metaphor for the structure and discipline in school. This is the introduction to a march theme, symbolic of passing through the classes up to the final examinations. Then, the Ross Roy theme is dealt with again, now in a playful, humorous variation. As if the composer is saying there should also be time for a smile in school. The same theme can be heard in major key and a slower tempo in the following section, expressing pride and self-confidence. This is also the introduction to the expressive middle section that represents love, friendship and understanding. We then return to the march theme in a slightly altered construction. The oriental sounds, constituting the modulation to the final theme, are symbols of the diversity of cultures in the school. The characteristic final theme first sounds solemn, but turns into a festive apotheosis. It is no coincidence that the final cadence is reminiscent of the close to a traditional overture, for the school years can be considered the overture to the rest of one's life. The premiere of Ross Roy was conducted by Jacob de Haan in Brisbane, on August 22, 1997.
$191.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

When Max Reinhardt was engaged to direct a German language production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing at the Vienna Volksbühne in 1918, he asked Korngold to compose the incidental music. The production, under the German title Viel Lärmen um Nichts did not open until May 6, 1920 at the Schönbrunn Palace Theater. In the pit, the composer led members of the Vienna Philharmonic, performing no less than 18 pieces of music. In the meantime, due to the tardy premiere of the play, Korngold had already extracted a five-movement orchestral suite which garnered much praise when performed three months before the play's opening night. The five movements included: 1. the Overture; 2. Scene in the Bridal Chamber; 3. Holzapfel und Schlehwein (a mock-serious scene); 4. Intermezzo (Garden Scene); and 5. Hornpipe. When the play moved to Vienna's Burgtheater (more than 80 performances) and later to the Rezidenz Theater in Munich, the music continued to attract much attention. Demand for the music was such that Korngold arranged the suite into versions for violin and piano (four pieces), and for solo piano (three pieces). German composer-arranger Leo Artok (1885-1935) arranged the most popular three items (1. Hornpipe; 2. Garden Scene; and 3. In the Bridal Chamber) for small orchestra, which were then published by Schott in 1926. This newly engraved edition of the Artok arrangement, offered with a new full score for the first time, has been completed by R. Mark Rogers. All editions noted above are available from the publisher. Instrumentation: 1.1.2.1: 2.2.1.0: Timp.Perc(2).Harm: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set). Published by Carl Fischer Music (CF.SPS78). ISBN 9781491152553. UPC: 680160910052. Key: Bb major. Festival March is presented in a new edition arranged by Richard Summers. It is a tour de force composition for advanced bands and hearkens back to a bygone era during the golden age of the band movement. Directors and students will hear operatic music from composer Victor Herbert who is best known for his Christmas classic, Toyland. This is a richly scored masterpiece that deserves to return to standard status in concert band repertoire. We are proud to bring you this new setting of this cherished classic. Festival March by Victor Herbert was written for the Pittsburgh Symphony and first performed under Herbert’s direction in Chicago on Dec. 9, 1901 celebrating the 12th anniversary of Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre. Also known as the Auditorium Festival March, he included it many times for programs of a festival nature. The main theme Auld Lang Syne, a famous Scottish folk song, is incorporated many times along with brass fanfares, interludes and march melodies. This band arrangement is very similar to the original orchestral composition. The missing string parts, the addition of the saxophone section and other band instruments, editing of the superimposed triplets against sixteenth notes, to one or the other, and articulations suitable for the band, were major challenges. The style of early twentieth-century American music is captured here. This arrangement will give band musicians access to a fine piece of music that could only be appreciated by orchestra musicians up to now. Although suitable for many occasions, this piece is a great way to begin or end a December holiday concert.  Notes to the ConductorVictor Herbert’s music can be interpreted in a romantic style, which is the conductor’s responsibility to read in nuance and musicality. The beginning and other triple-tonguing sections of this piece have a March of the Toys quality to it.  The interludes and Auld Lang Syne sections are legato and musical. The March sections can also be shaped musically.About the ComposerVictor Herbert was born in Ireland in 1861 and raised in Germany. When he moved to America in 1886, he joined the Metropolitan Opera as principal cellist and eventually composed many works including forty-three operettas on Broadway from the 1890s to World War I, including Naughty Marietta and Babes in Toyland. Victor Herbert conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony from 1898 to 1904 and then was the conductor of his own Victor Herbert Orchestra. He formed ASCAP with a group of composers in 1914 and was the director until his death in 1924. Among his thirty-one compositions for orchestra, Festival March was a favorite of his and was eventually published by Carl Fischer Music.  . $150.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) completed his Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor in 1803, not long after writing the famous letter to his brothers, the Heiligenstadt Testament, in which he lamented his increasing deafness. He gave the first performance of the piece, as soloist, on April 5 in a public benefit concert at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. The opening melody in the first movement bears striking similarity to the first theme heard in Mozart's 24th piano concerto. As a whole, the piece provides an essential link between the Mozartean charm of the two earlier concertos and the more idiosyncratic work found in his middle period. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.0.0: Timp: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Solo Piano. These products are currently being prepared by a new publisher. Concert Band/Harmonie - Grade 4 SKU: BT.DHP-1115071-010 Un hommage au sculpture Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. Composed by Jan de Haan. Concert and Contest Collection CBHA. Concert Piece. Set (Score & Parts). Composed 2012. De Haske Publications #DHP 1115071-010. Published by De Haske Publications (BT.DHP-1115071-010). 9x12 inches. English-German-French-Dutch. Le Lion de Belfort was composed for the official inauguration of the sculpture Le Lion de Belfort: an enormous red sandstone lion that dominates the landscape of the French city of Belfort. This 22 metre long and 11 metre high lion symbolises the heroic French resistance during the Prussian siege of Belfort in 1870-1871. The composer added a narrator and three-part choir to the concert band instrumentation, who utilise texts written specially for the occasion by Jean Ehret. The work’s première took place at the inauguration of Le Lion de Belfort on 28 November 2010, 130 years after sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) completed the statue.
An exciting and impressive composition that portrays an epic struggle in the distant past between the forces of good and evil. A wizard, a beautiful exotic maiden, a battle, and our hero are woven in the fabric of this musical tale. Sprightly melodies, lively rhythms and tasty writing for a whole battalion of percussionists produce an opening section which is full of energy and vitality. The flowing adagio section features a nice oboe solo (cued in clarinet) and a horn section soli (cued in saxes) that really make this piece special. I Love the 207 was composed in February 2010 for a commission by Osumi Symphonic Band in Kyoto. It was first performed on 25 April 2010 by Osumi Symphonic Band, conducted by Masanori Ozaki. This piece begins with an introduction to present the instruments, followed by a light scherzo. The title is an affectionate reference to the commuter rail 207 series of the West Japan Railway Company. When the band started their activity, the 207 series trains began running through the fields next to the building where they practice. The composer hopes that the trains continue to run and bring smiles to people’s faces.
