Dedicated to Demarre McGill, Principal Flute, Seattle Symphony OrchestraFlute Duration: 6' Composed: 2020 Published by: Subito Music Publishing PROGRAM NOTE: The year 2020 has definitely been a very challenging year with many upheavals. During this time of the COVID-19 health crisis, wearing masks, and high racial tensions, I decided to compose four short solo woodwind works for flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon, which represent the core woodwind section in an orchestra. I was inspired to compose these short pieces after I first heard Igor Stravinsky's three short pieces for clarinet, which totals a little more than four minutes in duration. I thought that it would be nice to highlight and honor my African-American male colleagues in the orchestral music world. I wanted to celebrate the fact that they are the principal player in the section of their respective orchestras. The short pieces are as follows: Principal Brother No. 1 for flute solo for Demarre McGill, Principal Flute of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 2 for oboe solo for Titus Underwood, Principal Oboe of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 3 for clarinet solo for Anthony McGill, Principal Clarinet of the New York Philharmonic, and Principal Brother No. 4 for bassoon solo for Bryan Young, Principal Bassoon of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra. These works all begin with notes that are representative of their name; D for Demarre, B for Titus (ti in solfège starting on C), A for Anthony, and Bb for Bryan. There is also a rhythmic figure in the opening measures of each piece, which represent the utterance of their names. All four of these works are rhapsodic in nature with elements of improvisation. - James Lee III.

In Impulso Jean Guillou regards the flute as a person who appears and asks a short, yet compelling question in front of the public. This question is followed by a statement. And when the question is asked again, it is again followed by this statement, and the whole development of this work happens through increasingly precise paraphrases to which new ideas are added which are presented like a lyrical development and like a constant amplification. All gestures, all attacks or caresses of breath and lips multiply only with the aim of lending more richness and more substance as well as more reason to this initial question and statement. With the weight given to the more eloquent deductions and developments, the discourse comes to an end, while returning, as if in conclusion, again and again to this short and final statement from the beginning. Thus, the impulse and breath of the flute is expressed - eloquent and passionate - between paraphrase, exposition and clarification.

SYRINX, L. 129/CD 137 by Claude Debussy (1862-1918) is among the most famous works for solo flute and is considered to be an indispensable part of the flutist's repertoire. The first solo flute work of any significance since C.P.E. Bach's SONATA in A minor, written over 150 years prior, SYRINX is also credited with reinvigorating the flute as a solo instrument, a trend that continues still. Written as part of the incidental music to Gabriel Mourey's play PSYCHÉ, the short work was originally entitled FLÛTE DE PAN, and it is thought that it was intended to be played off-stage by the dedicatee, famous French flutist Louis Fleury. Reprint edition.

â€Small Suite for Flute and Piano is a piece written for the Paris Conservatoire contest by Pierre Petit. Really melodious, it lasts eight minutes and is divided into three distinct movements. The first part, ?Gai et allant? is quite fast and has to be played joyfully. It uses the whole range of the instrument with some really high notes and includes a Cadenza. The second part, ?Lent et très chanté?, is slower, slightly lower in range and really melodious. It is quite short compared to the other parts. The third and final movement has the same kind of range as the first one. Fast, it features a part to be played at Marzuka tempo and one to be played at the same tempo than the beginning. The piece ends on a really high trill. Small Suite is really enjoyable to play and to listen to. It however requires some strong skills in terms of technique and sonority that would be acquired by advanced players: the difficulty is therefore rated at 7.“.

Viennese composer Luna Alcalay continues to enrich the solo instrumental repertory, on this occasion with a short piece for flute in which she exploits, with her customary mastery, the instrument's rich expressive potential. Skilfully judged variations of dynamics, phrasing, attack and tone colour, often in close succession – en passant (in passing), as the title suggests – all combine to create an eight minute journey full of shifting light and atmosphere.

“Born in 1970, Éric Ledeuil is a versatile musician, working as a flautist, composer, conductor and teacher. All his expertise combined have created the wonderful short work, The Mysteries of Brocéliande. This delightful work by Ledeuil depicts the legendary forest in Brittany, France, which has been used in numerous literary works. It is a place of legend due to its uncertain location, unusual weather, and for notably containing a supposed magical fountain and the tomb of Merlin. The Mysteries of Brocéliande for Flute and Piano accompaniment is an essential and varied piece for intermediate flautists. Ledeuil's piece, depicting beautifully the inspiring forest of Brocéliande, makes for an exciting performance piece for the Flute.&rdquo.
