Absolutely one of the funkiest big band charts ever written. This Andy Clark arrangement of a great Don Sebesky original is loaded with appeal! Includes an open section for solos by any instrument and a drum solo section which climaxes with a terrific dogfight between the drums and the entire band! The ranges aren’t extreme, but it does require a solid trumpet section and a rhythm section that can play really funky to pull it off.

This chart was written when Thad lived in Denmark and was named after jazz organist Rhoda Scott. This writing is typical Thad that was a favorite of the Mel Lewis Orchestra and it is still played by the Village Vanguard Orchestra. This medium tempo AABA composition displays the classic Thad Jones harmonic and melodic approach to writing for a big band. Not as well known as Don’t Get Sassy or Tip Toe as it was first recorded in Denmark and then again with the Mel Lewis Orch on the The Definitive Thad Jones CD’s recorded in the US in 1988, but it is a great one. Commissioned for the Cardinal Vaughn Memorial School Jazz Band in London, England, this swing shuffle original for proficient bands will energize players and audiences. Equally appropriate as an opener, closer or anything in between, solos are offered to trumpet and trombone, but blues-based changes mean that the solo section can be expanded for other players if desired. Afterward there is a great stop-time sax soli with trumpet lead that yields to another solo section with changes cued in the saxophone parts.
