Julius Hemphill is celebrated for the brilliance and expressive range of his compositions for Saxophone Quartet and Sextet. The Saxophone Quartet works included in Book I and II were premiered by Julius with the World Saxophone Quartet (WSQ). Covering a broad range of musical styles, they are compelling vehicles for improvisation and equally works that can be performed without improvisation as a concert suite. The orchestration is S/A/T/B, with some doubling of alto and soprano saxophone. These two collections are also available for String Quartet instrumentation and performance. The Catalan composer and vihuela player Luis de Milan (1500-1561) ranks among the most important composers of the Spanish Renaissance. His collection El Maestro from 1536 was the first publication of vihuela music in music history (the vihuela is a predecessor of the guitar). The six pavans contained therein are typical examples of the stately processional dance. According to the etymological derivation of'pavo' (Spanish/Latin: 'peacock'), this characteristic bird call which can be performed freely and naturalistically by the saxophoneplayer can sometimes be heard in this 'peacock's dance'. World premiere: 15.2.2017 Ballhaus Berlin, with Domiki Wollenweber (cor anglais) and the saxophone quartet CLAIR OBSCUR. Also published by Schott: a version for alto saxophone (cor anglais) and organ (ED 21260).

Minimax was premiered in 1923 in the original version for string quartet at the Donaueschinger Musiktage and edited in 2014 by Christoph Enzel for saxophone quartet. The 6 parodies of military music perfectly match the saxophone, the wit and spirit of the compositions can be transferred without restriction. Some coarseness works almost better on the saxophone than in the original.
