Par SAURET EMILE. Émile Sauret, violin virtuoso, teacher and composer, was admired by some of the greatest composers of his time, including Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Bruch, Wagner, Grieg and Mahler. He gave numerous concerts with Liszt, Rubinstein, and Moszkowski, and often played duets with Sarasate. He is predominantly remembered for the fiendishly difficult cadenza he composed to Paganini?s first violin concerto. Sauret?s 24 Etudes Caprices for solo violin are a substantial virtuoso journey through every major and minor key. Written while he was a professor of violin at the Royal Academy of Music in London, they are notable for the exceptional variety of filigree detail and variation in nuance, dynamic, fingering, bowing and phrasing, creating etudes far more substantial than is typical in this genre. Unavailable since their first publication early in the 20th century, the Etudes Caprices are edited by leading violinist and Sauret specialist, Nazrin Rashidova, who has made the first complete recording of the Etudes Caprices, performing them on Sauret?s own Stradivarius. Using the original Simrock edition as a basis, this edition supplements Sauret?s original bowings and fingerings with Rashidova?s own suggestions. The Sonata à violin solo (M.S. 83) is an early work by Paganini that can be ascribed to the years 1796-1800, a period which includes works such as the posthumous Grande concerto (M.S. 75), the Inno patriottico con variazioni (M.S. 81) and the Tema variato (M.S. 82) for violin. There are no doubts as to the authenticity of the work: the highly virtuosic experimental writing, the indications ?Organetto? and ?Flagioletto? and the use of the fourth string are all distinctive traits found in Paganini?s writing from this period which link the Sonata to the Inno patriottico con variazioni and the Tema variato. The most significant characteristics of this composition are its length and the three-movement structure that connect it to the Classical style, at least far as the first movement is concerned: it is written in sonata form, something rarely seen in Paganini?s solo violin works. / Date parution : 2022-02-17/ Répertoire / Violon

Allerheiligentag V. Par LINJAMA JYRKI. The material for Jyrki Linjama's Allerheiligentag cycle is a Finnish folk chorale for All Saints' Day (no. 146 in the Finnish Hymn Book). The first work in the cycle is a string trio (2007), the second a piece for orchestra (2009), and the fourth and fifth are solo works for viola da gamba (2018) and Sonata for violin solo (2019). The composer tells: 'The choice of topic and material was originally influenced by the place where the string trio would be premiered ? the old church on the island of Seili (Själö) in the Turku archipelago. The bleak history of the mental hospital on the island invited images of suffering and death. I got so attached to the fine, bleak melody that this series of works began to emerge.' Lasting 17 minutes, the sonata for solo violin has three movements, all of them embracing the folk choral material and Béla Bartók?s influence in different ways.
