The prodigy Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847) composed the CONCERTO FOR VIOLIN No. 1 in D minor, MWV O 3, in 1822 when he was only 13. Written for Eduard Rietz, a dear friend and teacher, the concerto was forgotten, and after Mendelssohn died, his widow gifted the score to Mendelssohn's friend Ferdinand David. The work remained unknown until violin virtuoso Yehudi Menuhin, in 1951, was shown the manuscript by a London rate books dealer. Menuhin, realizing the opportunity he had, quickly bought the rights for the work from the Mendelssohn family, edited the concerto, then offered the first performance in well over 100 years at Carnegie Hall on February 4, 1952. While not as popular as Mendelssohn's VIOLIN CONCERTO in E minor, the work does find frequent performances. Reprint of the Renate Unger edition. String count of 8-8-5-5-5 in set.

Premiering on May 22, 1813, at the Teatro San Benedetto in Venice, L'italiana in Algeri (The Italian Girl in Algiers) by Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) was a success, with subsequent performances in Vicenza, Milan, and Naples. It was later performed at His Majesty's Theatre in London in 1819, and again in New York in 1832. Rossini's mixture of opera seria and opera buffa is notable — L'italiana in Algeri tells the tale of Isabella, an Italian girl who uses her wiles to trick unwitting Mustafà, the Bey of Algiers, into freeing her and her lover, Lindoro from his palace. The opera itself fell somewhat out of favor in the 19th century but has been revived frequently since World War II with many successful productions. The sorrowful cavatina Cruda sorte! Amor Tiranno! takes place in Act I, and serves as the introductory aria of Isabella, who finds herself shipwrecked in Algiers. The aria is preceded by the chorus Quanto Roba! Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.0.0: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Solo Contralto: Mixed Chorus.

The three-act operetta LA RONDINE (The Swallow) by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) was first completed in 1916 and premiered at the Grand Théâtre de Monte Carlo on March 27, 1917. It tells the story of Magda, a Parisian courtesan, who is torn between more transactional love she has chosen and the romantic love of a wife with the young man Ruggero, whom she meets at a small house party of her protector Rambaldo, then again at a Paris nightspot. After leaving to live with Ruggero for some time, she flees back to Rambaldo when Ruggero proposes marriage, declaring that she cannot keep her past a secret and she will not allow her previous life to bring grief to both Ruggero and his parents. Never satisfied, Puccini revised the operetta in both 1920 and 1921, altering the ending each time, and he passed before he settled on the definitive version. The beautiful tenor aria PARIGI! È LA CITTÀ DEI DESIDERI (Paris! It is the city of desire) was not included in the original libretto and added by Puccini to give Ruggero, the romantic lead, something to do in the first act. While it does not move the plot forward, the aria does quickly endear listeners to the Ruggero character. The aria was later cut from the opera and is not usually heard in staged versions, although the music was used again with different text in Puccini's 1917 song MORIRE?, S. 89. This edition of the aria by Michael Kaye is from the second version (1920) of the opera.

Chinese mythology is a cultural heritage that has been passed down through the ages. It is full of bizarre andsupernatural artistic charm. Shan Hai Jing is like a history book, which contains many mythological stories depictingthousands of mountains and waters, geography and humanities, The Concerto for Orchestra Shan Hai Jing is using alarge scyle orchestra in multi-movements, inspired by the anceint supernatural aesthetics, and creates an imaginaryuniverse and human illusion with an abstract sound world. This work is not based on the story of the ancient gods, butbased on the geographical distribution of the Fivering Mountains, metaphorical waters, mountains range, folkcustoms, and rituals of the gods, depicting the north, west, east, south, and middle respectively in five movements. Thecharacteristics of the mountain system and the regional customs. The first movement, Beishan Jing (Largo) (page 1-30). In this movement, folk music elements such as the traditionalMongolian “Humai” and the traditional Tibetan “Bon’e’ri” are used to Ode the folk customs and heroism of the vastmountains and plains and different ethnic groups. The second movement, Xishan Jing (Allegro and Adagio) (page 31-52). The music of this movement has the westernstyle of Gansu and Qinghai Plateau. The third movement, Dongshan Jing (Adagio and Allegro) (page 53-86). The legend of great bells that ringspontaneously without being struck has origins in the ancient Classic of Mountains and Seas, in which we read:“Upon the Mountains of Plenty, Nine Bells ring with Knowledge of the Frost.”Tales of those blasts of wind that pulse like a heartbeat through caverns in the limestone cliffs, setting off a mysterioussympathetic ringing from bells encrusted in frost, led to “Frost-Bell” becoming a word during the Tang dynasty, almosta millennium after the Mountains and Seas classic first appeared. The fourth movement, Nanshan Jing (Adagio and Andante) (page 87-100) . The music is characterized by thewoodwinds and string harmonics texture depicting of the cloud mountain in the south of the Yangtze River, Fujian,Guangdong and Hunan. The fifth movement, Zhongshan Jing (Allegretto) (page 101-118) symbolizes the end of the ritual ceremony, which isroughly centered on the sacred place of Chu. The people danced together, waving flowers and hitting the bronze drums, just like sending the Divine Comedy, the scene is lively, the atmosphere is Solemn and lively.

Lindsay E. Stetner's Lighting the Dark was inspired by the work of Nikola Tesla. This piece was inspired by a documentary called Mysteries of the Abandoned, which featured the now abandoned laboratory. The most striking feature of the property is the nearly 200-foot tall Wardenclyffe Tower. His work with electricity and the Tesla coil has become an area of fascination in our quest for cleaner energy and electric cars. (3:50).

Count d'Ogny commissioned Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) to write three symphonies for the Concert de la Loge Olympique, which was then recognized as one of the finest orchestras in Europe. He completed the second of these, the SYMPHONY No. 91 in E flat major, Hob. I/91, in 1788. It received its premiere the next year in the Tuileries Palace gardens, mere months before King Louis XVI and his royal family came to live there under custody of the French Revolution. It is his last symphony to exclude trumpets and timpani, but stuffed with delicacies that would have appealed to its Parisian audience. Its graceful, ebullient character offers no hints of the hard misfortune that would soon fall on the aristocratic listeners who first enjoyed this charming work. Instrumentation: 1.2.0.2: 2.0.0.0: Str (4-4-3-2+2Vc Obligato-3 in set).

This composition in two distinct parts, of classical and baroque inspiration, evokes a stay in the beautiful Quercy region, in particular in Rocamadour. In the first movement, Confidence, it evokes stories, stories the tales of yesteryear shared in a peaceful and serene setting, like that of the landscapes calm and picturesque views around Rocamadour. The melody seems to whisper secrets offering an atmosphere that is both nostalgic and contemplative. Then, in the more rhythmic part, the Dance comes alive with energy. Its rhythm reflects the joyful and festive spirit of local traditions. We can imagine a lively dance, perhaps inspired by festivals and celebrations which take place in Rocamadour, where the music resonatesthrough the cobbled streets and old city walls. Music For a While is a collection of three short sketches. The music interweaves elements of East European folklore, North American minimalism, European polyphony and traditional Italian music. The first sketch is a very rhythmical, lively and powerful dance based on a fragment from Bela Bartok’s collection For Children. The second sketch is like a canon, a tribute to Pachelbel, but interestingly the development of the piece is influenced by contemporary minimalism. The music, based on a cell of 4 bars with a typical tonal progression that is constantly variated, is simple, beautiful and bright. The last sketch is an homage to Federico Fellini’s universe. With a typical Italian dance rhythm (including references to Nino Rota’s music), this piece evokes the crazy, funny and melancholic wMusic For a While est une collection de trois courts croquis. The writing of this piece arose from seeing Goya's painting Un pavo muerto an unadorned oil painting where a turkey and a wicker basket rest on an indistinct black background.Fantasizing about making a harpsichord fantasy (I wrote a double stave version of the piece), how to evoke and decline the sensations felt at the glance, musically? Through, I thought, the use of a particularly dark and passionate mode, culturally and emotionally akin to the tones and features of the great Spanish painter's painting. Unlike my usual type of writing, often susceptible to unexpected disturbances, I forced myself to use almost exclusively the notes of the modal scale in different combinations, and in the middle section of the piece to employ them by transforming them into brighter modes (to let some light filter through).A composition that also features some rather explicit moments of instrumental virtuosity, ideally thought of as possible offshoots of a hellish fandango.- Alfredo Franco, January 2024«L'écriture de cette pièce est née de la contemplation du tableau de Goya Un pavo muerto, une simple peinture à l'huile où une dinde et un panier en osier reposent sur un fond noir indistinct.

Dedicated to the luminary Steve Cowan, …empty mind, open heart… is a four-movement suite that centers around the intervals of a fifth and a tritone. Each movement is inspired by a quote from the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu. The opening movement is a meditation. The aleatoric rhythms and pacing of the notes are guided by the breathing of the performer, according to specific instructions in the score. Out of that atmosphere emerges a fluid, serene series of arpeggios in irregular rhythms in the second movement. Each new chord changes only one or two notes at a time in a gradual evolution over time. The third movement is a study in rhythm, sometimes dizzying.
