Breitkopf and Haertel #PB 5710. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.PB-5710). ISBN 9790004216477. 10.5 x 14 inches. Richard Strauss's last completed tone poem is regarded as the pinnacle of his art of orchestration: Now I've finally learned to orchestrate, he himself is once supposed to have said about it after the dress rehearsal. The single-movement Alpine symphony that we know today ultimately evolved - over almost 15 years - from the original drafts of an artist's tragedy, titled Der Antichrist. Eine Alpensinfonie [The Antichrist. An Alpine Symphony] up to the stage of the last sketches. With unprecedented plasticity, the work showcases a (metaphysical?) mountain hike with stops in the forest, at the waterfall, on the alpine pasture and, of course, at the summit. Apropos alpine pastures: up to the score's fair copy stage, Strauss envisaged a high and a low alphorn for the section Auf der Alm [On the Alpine Pasture] and the well-known Dulioh theme, though for various reasons first detailed in our new Urtext edition, these exotic instruments did not find their way into the printed version. In the new edition, the editor, Nick Pfefferkorn, reproduces the alphorn passages in small print, also adding two alphorn parts to the performance material, besides evaluating the corrections made by Walter Seifert at Strauss's request.

SKU: BR.EB-9387 Composed by Christian Mason. Edition Breitkopf. New music...(+)
SKU: BR.EB-9387 Composed by Christian Mason. Edition Breitkopf. New music (post-2000); Music post-1945. Set of parts. Composed 2019. Duration 20'. Breitkopf and Haertel #EB 9387. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.EB-9387). ISBN 9790004188576. 0 x 0 inches. Commissioned by the Kolner Philharmonie (KolnMusik) for the non bthvn projekt 2020 and the Cite de la musique / Philharmonie de Paris Dedicated to Arditti Quartet Each movement of this quartet explores a single state, its lights and its shadows. Each movement, you could say, is a moment . And these moments could last for more or less time without compromising their essential nature. The processes could be extended or compressed, repeated or reversed, but the core ideas - if they are ideas, but maybe they are simply experiences? - are what they are. Despite this, the precise sequence of movements matters a great deal. Heard together they do articulate some kind of linear narrative, maybe even a metaphorical journey (albeit a circular one where the arrival might, who knows, prove to be a new departure). One situation gives way to another and instrumental relationships within the quartet vary, but ultimately the imaginative impulse behind the piece preferences states of unity. Whether or not this unity is expressed texturally - sometimes literal unisons pervade, but not always - there is generally a sense that even seemingly diverse aspects relate to a fundamental condition of concord: a conscious limitation in the pitch structure to spectral emanations of the root notes E-flat and C. At the opening this is unambiguously audible in the perpetual alternation of these two notes in the low cello register. Later the two spectra are woven into a micro-tonal 'double-spectral-mode' (derived from the first 24 partials of the C and E-flat fundamentals), which defines the subtle melodic inflection of the second movement, and the never-quite-chromatic ascending scales of the third. For now this feels like a rich source of melodic possibility, so far only just glimpsed... And why the insistence on E-flat? Probably by way of historical anecdote. Apparently Karl Holz (a member of the Schuppanzigh Quartet) said to Beethoven: We performed your Quartet in E-flat Op. 127 in his [Weber's] honour; he found the Adagio too long; but I told him: Beethoven also has a longer feeling and a longer imagination than anyone standing or not standing today. - Since then, even Linke (another member of the quartet) can no longer stand him: we cannot forgive him for this. Listening again to Op. 127, in light of these comments, I was struck by the opening moment: the unfolding of an E-flat 7th chord over the course of a few bars. Every time I hear it I find myself wishing that Beethoven would have lingered longer there, without resolution or progression, just enjoying that sonority. And maybe - why not? - tune the 7th naturally. And what would it be to stretch that moment into an entire piece? What would Weber think of that?! In the end I was not so extreme in my self-limitation, and other concerns took over, but it was from these thoughts that the composition process began... Lastly, about the title: it comes from a book called 'The Clock of the Long Now' by Stewart Brand, published at the turn of the millennium. It's about the creation of a thousand-year clock to embody the aspiration to thinking in terms of longer time-spans than are presently habitual. If the music of Beethoven embodied a 'longer' feeling and imagination than some of his contemporaries were able to appreciate, what is our relation to time now? Longer or shorter? Maybe it depends who you ask... It's probably more extreme in both directions: attention spans might be diminishing in the digital world, but conversely there is an awareness of distant pasts and potential futures which would have been inconceivable at the time of Beethoven. In any case, the interesting thing is to ponder how societal conditions, assumptions and expectations might - whether consciously or unconsciously - influence the time of art, for listeners and creators alike. And what if time is running out? (Christian Mason)

Whereas Nono considered the world to be only fragmentarily analyzable, so-called consumer capitalism increasingly intrudes upon ego structures, by fragmenting them to the point of: assumed insufficiency, i.e., was consumption a form of infiltration?, or: in television you can see models licking face cream because it's so rich etc. (retranslated), as Meredith Haaf cited in her book review (SZ / 23.05.2016 Alexandra Kleeman: You Too Can Have A Body Like Mine) , and to the point of similar perfection-senselessness. Music doesn't do things by halves. Even when events or notes are puffed up, they can retain elegance and significance. Other ego amplitudes are of violinistic nature or are favourite memories - Paganini's Capricci, Stockhausen's Studie I, Steve Reich, the tone C and similar things. The craziest egos are quantums, because at no time are they identical with themselves. They can entangle and superpose, are nonlocal, etc. Although the sound character in this Duo is fairly open, I believe I succeeded in making probability waves of harmonic stopovers perceptible. This means hearing without analyzing and without constantly measuring. Nonlocality - without messenger particles - means no harmonic steps, but with the capacity to interact. (Nicolaus A. Huber, May 2016)

| Une Geometrie, Nr. 3 - Vertical et Blanc Carus Verlag
Bass flute, Bass clarinet, Baritone saxophone, Guitar, 2 Violins SKU: CA.1633...(+)
Bass flute, Bass clarinet, Baritone saxophone, Guitar, 2 Violins SKU: CA.1633000 For bass flute (alto flute solo), bass clarinet, baritonsaxophone, guitar, 2 violins. Composed by Walter Feldmann. German title: Vertical Et Blanc 2006. Playing score. Composed 2006. 70 pages. Carus Verlag #CV 16.330/00. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.1633000). ISBN 9790007113469. Language: all languages. The texts of the French author Anne-Marie Albiach have long been the point of departure for my works. Following the viola concerto << monstrueuse vecut dans le cadre >> la memoire, which is based on her << H II >> lineaires, the three texts entitled << une geometrie >> have generated a new cycle. As in the other two works of the cycle, << vertical et blanc >> is predicated on two different readings of the text: on the one hand a (private) reading by Anne-Marie Albiach in which time is measured out; while on the other hand the graphic text is measured millimeter by millimeter. The latter serves as the basis - the genetic code - for the temporal, horizontal structures of the ensemble part, whereas the reading of the author appears late in the melodic lines of the solo alto flute, which force the ensemble to play an accompaniment in flat surfaces. In << vertical et blanc >> one clearly recognizable element is repeated: a ninth chord, the basic element in the works of Claude Debussy, the composer who I admire wholeheartedly. For the generation of tone materials this chord is compressed and stretched within the ranges (frames) of tones which are derived from the horizontal positions of the text fragments: lower, borderline tones on the left margin, and higher borderline tones on the right margin. Thus the disposition on the page, essential for Anne-Marie Albiach (and first introduced in poetry by Mallarme in Un coup de des jamais n'abolira le hasard), is rendered in sound. Naturally each element of the text serves to mould structure and dynamics, to include the typography: fragments within quotation marks, in italics, etc., yield different sonorities and movements. Whereas the ensemble articulates rhythmically each character of the text, the rhythms of the solo flute articulate only its syllables and words. Each word of the author's reading of the text is instrumentated differently, which is important for the entire cycle. Thus a compact network of instrumental combinations is created in which, word for word, the text is made audible. $38.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Ravel's first sketch of the score as well as his final handwritten score were laid down as the principal sources. In his preface, Monnard examines Ravel's sound aesthetics against the background of concert reception and historical recordings. Moreover, he also provides insights into Ravel's ideas concerning the tempo: ,,I must say that the Bolero is rarely conducted the way I think it should. Mengelberg speeds up and slows down excessively. Toscanini takes it twice as fast as it should be and broadens the tempo at the close, which is indicated nowhere. No: the Bolero should be played in one single tempo from the beginning to the end, in the plaintive and monotonous style of Spanish-Arabian melodies. The performance material to Ravel's Bolero can now also be purchased in its entirety for the first time.

Composed under pressure, edited in peace: K. 491In spring 1786 Mozart was under pressure: he had only two weeks between the composition and first performance of the C-minor Piano Concerto K. 491. It is no wonder that the autograph was written very hastily and the piano part occasionally only sketched. Mozart, who played the solo part at the premiere, still thought about it later. During subsequent revisions of the piano part, he caused a certain amount of confusion through corrected versions and parallel versions. Editor Ernst Herttrich thus faced great challenges when preparing the Breitkopf Urtext edition, especially since printed editions were only published posthumously. But since they contain readings that play an important role in the reception of the work, they were included in the new edition as variants. $29.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks

| Easy Character Pieces from the French Baroque Era Piano solo [Score] Breitkopf & Härtel
Piano SKU: BR.EB-8029 Piano Lessons by Francois Couperin. Composed...(+)
Piano SKU: BR.EB-8029 Piano Lessons by Francois Couperin. Composed by Francois Couperin. Edited by Heinz Walter. Solo instruments; Softcover. Edition Breitkopf. Baroque period. Score. 20 pages. Breitkopf and Haertel #EB 8029. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.EB-8029). ISBN 9790004174326. 9 x 12 inches. This series of easy piano music for teaching purposes presents pupils in the lower and lower middle grades with a carefully chosen selection of well-known and lesser-known compositions by important masters. The volumes are deliberately kept small in extent, since it is more stimulating for children to change the teaching material frequently. There are four existing harpsichord books with a total of 226 compositions by Francois Couperin le Grand (1668 -1733). His works are as unknown to pianists as they are famous among harpsichord players. The grace and imaginativeness of his works lend themselves especially well to the sound of the harpsichord, which is why the piano interpretation of works by Couperin, Rameau, Scarlatti and other composers of that time has been categorically rejected. But, after all, the works of Bach and Handel were written for the haipsichord and clavichord, and no one would dare question their intetpretation on the pianoforte. In order to introduce these lmpressionists of the Baroque Era to piano instruction, the editor has added to this series a folio of both Couperin's and Rameau's (EB 8033) music. The selection of the pieces is based on two criteria: 1. relatively modest demands made on technique, 2. various musical forms of expression. The Butterflies and the Windmills are both especially typical of masterful character pieces. The demands made on technique certainly correspond to a level of moderate difficulty. The simplifications made are restricted to the artistically realized twopart accompaniment (eg. p. 4 f. and p. 8 f.) with regard to finger stretch and to the profuse ornamentation of the original. The indications for phrasing and articulation are those of the editor. The first two pieces have been precisely elaborated on in this respect to serve as a model, whereas the remaining pieces contain only suggestions. As in other folios of this series; what is here to be stressed, is the importance of working out independently the phrasing and the dynamics. Directions for this are given by the respective footnotes; these directions, however, are not obligatory. lndications pertaining to dynamics and tempo have been omitted completely; the clearly recognizable character of the individual pieces should be direction enough. The tonal possibilities of the piano should in any case be used subtly. The very precise fingerings have been adapted to the suggested phrasings and to the corresponding realization of trills (according to the table). Tuba or Bass Trombone and Piano - advanced SKU: CY.CC2951 Composed by Claude Debussy. Arranged by Ralph Sauer. French Impressionist. Solo part and Piano accompaniment. 20 pages. Cherry Classics #2951. Published by Cherry Classics (CY.CC2951). ISBN 9790530057704. One of the greatest works of the French impressionist era, Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faune by Claude Debussy evokes mystery, stillness, lyricism, finesse, sensuality, nature, dreams and desires. Taken from a poem by Stephane Mallarme this work is considered by some to be a turning point of musical history as an awakening of modern music as it stretches the limits of tonality. The work was later choreographed in 1912 by Nijinsky.
This marvelous arrangement by Ralph Sauer is appropriate for advanced performers and is about 10 minutes in length. $27.50 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks
