This piece by Thierry Deleruyelle is based on one of the most significant events in the history of coal mining; the catastrophe at Courrières, Northern France. It took place on 10th March 1906 and is considered the most momentous mining accident inEurope and the second most significant in the world. This work is both emotional and spectacular and tells in 7 contrasting sections the catastrophe that occurred. Fraternity was the test piece in the “Champion” category at the European BrassBand Competition 2016 in Lille, thus commemorating 110 years since the disaster at Courrières.

Dit werk van Thierry Deleruyelle beschrijft een van de belangrijkste gebeurtenissen in de geschiedenis van de kolenmijnen: de mijnramp van Courrières in het noorden van Frankrijk. Deze vond plaats op 10 maart 1906 en wordt beschouwd als de meestindringende mijncatastrofe in Europa en de op één na ergste van de wereld. De compositie is zowel emotioneel al spectaculair: in zeven contrasterende delen vertelt ze het aangrijpende verhaal van de ramp. Fraternity was het verplichte werkvoor de kampioensdivisie van de Europese Brassband Kampioenschappen van 2016 in Lille; hiermee wordt tevens de ramp van Courrières herdacht, die 110 jaar geleden plaatsvond.

Cole Porter was one of the great masters of Broadway musicals during the thirties, forties and fifties, with So in Love, from the musical Kiss Me Kate, being one of his best loved works. It has been recorded by many artists including Bing Crosby, Lulu, Shirley Bassey and Julie Andrews, however it is the Ella Fitzgerald version that is best known. Lâ??auteur-compositeur américain Cole Porter (1891-1964) est initié au piano dès son plus jeune ge. Plus tard, il suit un cursus universitaire Yale puis Paris. Sa vie a suscité bien des commentaires. En 1918, il épouse Linda Lee Thomas. Le couple partage sa vie entre Paris, Venise, New York et Hollywood où Cole Porter se consacre la composition de musiques de films. Le mariage est heureux en dépit de lâ??homosexualité notoire de Cole Porter. En 1937, il est victime dâ??un grave accident qui le laisse handicapé vie. Cole Porter restera meurtri par cette expérience. Son épouse meurt en 1954. Quatre ans plus tard, il est amputé de la jambe droite. Son appétit de vivre et saflamme créatrice sâ??éteignent. Il meurt en 1964.Cole Porter a composé de superbes chansons et comédies musicales dont certaines sont encore très appréciées de nos jours. Il suffit dâ??évoquer Iâ??ve Got You Under My Skin ou Every Time We Say Goodbye. While the day-to-day grind of our lives can be filled with overwhelming obligations, goals and commitments, it is sometimes very easy to forget just how precious and fragile life is . It is so easy to get caught up in our own personal feelings and worries that we sometimes don’t realize and appreciate the many blessings we have, especially friendships . On Wednesday, November 18, 2015 the Jefferson High School Band in Jefferson, Georgia lost two of its members to a fatal car accident . The victims were brothers . Music was a constant part of their lives, and the boys were talented percussionists in the marching band . To help with the grieving process the school and community commissioned this piece to celebrate the lives of William and Alex Trimble .As a father, I cannot imagine losing a child, let alone two, and beginning this piece was very difficult as I felt extreme anguish, especially for the parents . But it was decided the piece should primarily reflect the enthusiasm, youthful spirits and positive influence these two young men demonstrated as they were deeply loved by their band mates, community and family . There are four main themes, each representing the feelings and emotions that are certain to occur after a loss of loved ones . The first theme is a short, introductory fanfare, strong and bold, to stand for courage . A second dance-like melody features a liltingly mixed meter to portray a youthful and carefree innocence . This soon changes into a third more song-like, and stately theme intended to provide encouragement as we move forward through life .The middle of the piece includes a soft transition as two snare drummers give voice to the boys, allowing them to thank their friends and assuring them that it will be okay . This moves directly into a slow melody introduced by the saxophones (Alex, the younger brother was also a saxophonist) and is a time for reflection and allows for feelings of sadness at losing beloved friends . However, a second statement of the same theme, now at full volume with a strong percussion cadence, intends to lift the spirits and allows all friends to unite in joyous celebration of life . Both the enthusiastic dance theme and stately lyrical theme return, now in different keys, and work their way toward the highly energetic burst of glorious sound in the short and wild coda . When Hearts Tremble was written to celebrate the joys of youth and life, and should remind us that our friends and loved ones are precious, and we should live each day to bring more joy into the world and into the lives of others .

After a long recovery from an accident, composer Hodkinson was asked for piano duet music for two colleagues at Stetson University. Eager to return to composing, Hodkinson produced this serenade, Brain Drops, with each of seven movements dedicated to the doctors and therapists who saw him through his ordeal. The serenade is frequently defined as instrumental 'evening music' characterized by a mixture of elements, he says. Forever Climbing was written as tribute to the loss of a high school band student that was tragically killed in a rock climbing accident. It is not intended as a sad piece, but as a celebration of the life of this exceptional young man. At times the piece is contemplative, but also contains a joy that is to depict the way he lived.
