Over the course of time, many composers have honoured the mother of Jesus with a musical Ave Maria (a Hail Mary). One of the most well-known is that of the French composer Charles François Gounod (1818-1893), who added a melody to the first prelude from Das Wohltemperierte Klavier by the German master-composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). The result is a long, lyrical melody line with a wonderfully built-up curve of tension, floating above a softly sparkling accompaniment. Lorenzo Bocci has arranged the Ave Maria by Bach/Gounod for clarinet ensemble.

As a counterpart to theOrgan Symphony No. 1 Pater Noster (ED 9937), the Organ Symphony No. 2 offers softer and more mysterious (Marian) sound worlds, sketching stages of Mary's life: an adoring Salve Regina grows from the mystic source, followed by Berceuse pour Marie as a lullaby of the Christmas events. The third movement Mater Dolorosa falls back on the well-known Gregorian sequence Stabat Mater, taking Mary's pain at the cross as its central theme. The finale treats the Ave Maris Stella in a crescendo from pp to ff in a positive and solemn manner, in memory of Mary's assumption. It is advisable to use an organ with at least three manuals.

Ave Maria was composed in 1964 and is one of the most beautiful works for choral ensemble from the 20th century. It was written for a local German fireman's choir by one of his parish's singers who's profession was as a firefighter. The work languished for years but was discovered by a touring American choir who brought it back to the USA and recorded it. It became an instant hit.The music has a heavenly feel to it and one is uplifted by its sheer beauty. This 7-minute arrangement by Robert Kalwas is for 8-part Trombone ensemble and of moderate difficulty. All parts are in bass clef and the ranges are not extreme at all.Ave Maria is featured on YouTube as a Virtual Choir International Multitrack for a Children's Charity in South Africa.Cherry Classics is pleased to have approval for this arrangement from the estate of Franz Biebl.

Schubert’s famous Ave Maria was originally titled Ellens dritter Gesang and was the sixth song in the Fräulein vom See song cycle (after The Lady of the Lake by Walter Scott). Edward Elgar originally composed this work in 1887, as a Pie Jesu, when he was an organist in the St George’s Church in Worcester. Years later, in 1902, he transformed the Pie Jesu into an Ave Verum for soprano and tenor solo, mixed choir and organ. This excellent arrangement by Robert van Beringen skilfully retains the wonderful atmosphere of the original composition.

Ave verum corpus creates an ethereal, somewhat removed mood. - The DiapasonA beautiful quasi-organum setting for SAB, reminiscent of Stravinsky's Pater Noster and Ave Maria...the Ave Verum is the most accessible to average groups, and is worth serious considerations for many directors.

Written for eight voices, this setting of Ave Maria harkens back to its roots with phrases of the original Gregorian Chant interspersed throughout. This would work well sung by either an octet or full choir.

Gounod had no qualms about arranging well-known works by earlier masters after his own fashion. Thus in 1852 he added a melody with its own operatic climax to the famous arpeggios of the C-major Prelude BWV 846 from Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. He first published instrumental versions of it under the title âMéditationâ, then tried fitting various texts to the melody until in 1859 he arrived at the definitive vocal version using the text of the Ave Maria. Already by the 1890s it was claimed that â[we] have heard this sweet melody innumerable times from the best lady singersâ, and its popularity has continued to the present day. Reason enough, then, for Henle Verlag to publish an Urtext edition of this worldwide hit, based on the sources and with appropriate critical commentary. In 1859, at the same time as the original edition for high voice, editions for middle and low voice, presumably commissioned by the publishers, were also issued. Following this model, the Henle Urtext edition of âAve Mariaâ is also offered in two transpositions for the lower register.
