Gounod had no qualms about arranging well-known works by earlier masters after his own fashion. Thus in 1852 he added a melody with its own operatic climax to the famous arpeggios of the C-major Prelude BWV 846 from Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. He first published instrumental versions of it under the title Mditation, then tried fitting various texts to the melody until in 1859 he arrived at the definitive vocal version using the text of the Ave Maria. Already by the 1890s it was claimed that [we] have heard this sweet melody innumerable times from the best lady singers, and its popularity has continued to the present day. Reason enough, then, for Henle Verlag to publish an Urtext edition of this worldwide hit, based on the sources and with appropriate critical commentary. In 1859, at the same time as the original edition for high voice, editions for middle and low voice, presumably commissioned by the publishers, were also issued. Following this model, the Henle Urtext edition of Ave Maria is also offered in two transpositions for the lower register.

Franz Schubert’s song Ave Maria is among his very most famous works and one of the best-loved works of he classical repertoire. In this version published by the Spanish Musical Union in 1945, the song has been adapted for solo Piano and the key transposed from B flat to C.Schubert’s Ave Maria was originally composed in 1825 as one of seven songs created from the epic poem The Lady of the Lake by Walter Scott, written to set the German translation of the work. The song was fairly quickly adapted for the words of the Catholic prayer Ave Maria and the Schubert melody is now frequently performed in the religious context.

This is an extraordinary setting of a beloved text. Its many challenges will stimulate choirs of advanced abilities and will provide endless possibilities for interpretation. The piece opens with the male voices singing a long melody that builds until all voices have sung it. Dominus tecum is then set quite chromatically as a stark contrast to the simple modality of the opening. A contrapuntal section follows which reaches a broad climax at the words Sancta Maria Mater Dei. A lovely ascending phrase is repeated three times: Ave maria. The piece concludes with an Amen setting using the opening material and ends in the major mode. This is a major addition to the choral repertory and advanced choirs will find it a stimulating and refreshing challenge.

Ave Maria was composed for the University of Kansas Choirs, and dedicated with appreciation to Simon Carrington (Kings Singers). It was premiered by the Oread Consort at Edington Priori Church in Wiltshire, England in May of 1997. The Gregg Smith Singers brought new life to this work at the 2000 Adirondack Festival of American Music in Saranac Lake, and followed with a recording on the Living Artist series. This piece was inspired by Gyorgy Ligeti's setting of Lux Aeterna (1966), as well as by Giuseppe Verdi's Ave Maria, the scala enigmatica armonizzata a Quattro voci (1898). It is shaped by a series of breath-like harmonic swells leading to climactic homophonic statements of the text, with strident voice pairings yearning for resolution. New York writer Watson Bosler describes the work as an iridescent wash of color as an intricate web of interrelated melodic and rhythmic themesThis Ave hymns not the sugar-water Virgin of Gounod or Scott, but rather the powerful Goddess Yeats depicts: The Roman Empire stood appalled:/ It dropped the reins of peace and war/ When that fierce virgin and her Star/ Out of the fabulous darkness called.

The present offertory Ave Maria is one of Haydn's earliest Salzburg sacred compositions. Dating, in all probability, from the year 1765, it displays the modest means and genial lyricism that is typical of his music from the time. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5034500.

This setting for women's voices takes its simplicity from the text. This is a short carol, which repeats the text Ave Maria three times. The opening refrain is written homophonically with a predominant use of major seconds. The middle verse section is an unaccompanied soprano solo set in English. The final refrain incorporates a descant taken from the solo verse which brings all three voices together.

Brahms's Ave Maria was composed in 1858. The widely-held opinions in the literature on Brahms - that the work has justifiably been forgotten, the part-writing is monotonous and the style and diction is ponderous - don't do justice to a truly charming piece, based on folksong-like models. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4018000.

The Ave Maria is suited for performance in a smaller setting. Instead of the Latin text Verdi set the Italian version, which during his lifetime was still ascribed to Dante. The Carus edition makes this work accessible in its original form. Score and part available separately - see item CA.9125000.
