Lee Hyla's Lives of the Saints, a work for solo voice and chamber ensemble, not only took theology as its subject, but also amounted to a virtual musical treatise. (Andrew Druckenbrod, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) The music conveys the story like a friend that uses her voice, arms, hands, shoulders and face to tell a story. (BobH on amazon.com) Part I of Lives of the Saints is for advanced performers. Duration: 20' (intended to be performed together with Part II, total duration 42'.).

Popular choral anthem Natalie Sleeth's popular choral anthem and hymn, also known as In the Bulb There Is a Flower, has been given a lovely new treatment by Tom Fettke for SATB choirs. The provocative text relates both to our present life and our hope of eternal life, as expressed in I Corinthians 15:35-58. This fresh setting emphasizes the resurrected life as it builds to the final victory stanza with driving rhythm and a change to common meter (4/4). This arrangement is also available in a medium-voice vocal solo in the key of F. The orchestration by Camp Kirkland contains a Conductor's Score and parts for: Flute 1 & 2, Oboe, Clarinet 1 & 2, Horn 1 & 2, Alto Sax 1 & 2 (substitute for Horn 1 & 2), Trombone 1 & 2, Tenor Sax/Baritone TC (substitute for Trombone 1 & 2), Trombone 3/Tuba, Percussion 1 & 2, Harp, Violin 1 & 2, Viola, Clarinet 3 (substitute for Viola), Cello/Bassoon and String Bass, Keyboard String Reduction.

“English Horn (or flute or clarinet or alto), Violin & Cello Rarely has a musical work been better characterized by its subtitle than Nicolas Bacri's Lyric Interlude: 'A Study in Pastoral Style'. When, in 2008, the composer received the commission for a piece with English horn from Cecilia Benner, patron of the Chamber Music Society of Detroit, he immediately thought of the duo between this instrument and the oboe that Berlioz, in the Symphonie fantastique, placed at the beginning of the 'Scène aux champs', making suddenly appear a nocturnal country landscape where two shepherds carry on a dialogue on their pipes. First performed in March 2009 at one of the Scarab Club Concerts in Detroit, the Lyric Interlude for English horn, violin and cello (Op.110a) nonetheless proclaims another tradition: that of British pastoralism, illustrated by the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), the 50th anniversary of his death having just been celebrated. This score pays him homage of rare sensitivity: set off by refined counterpoint, the undulating lament of the beginning, rhythmically supple, evokes the waving wheat, as does Vaughan Williams in the opening undulation of his Symphony No.3. The lyrical effusion, briefly interrupted by a scherzo in 6/8, again pours out, making the work evolve towards a slow, ecstatic atmosphere, close to the last of the English composer's Three Preludes on Welsh Hymn Tunes. Far from bucolic, postcard clichés and servile imitation, this Lyric Interlude opens the doors to a realm where pure beauty reigns. The composer also wrote another version of this work for English horn (or flute, clarinet, or viola) and piano, Op.110b (AL 30 750)&rdquo.

The Hungarian composer Istvan Szelenyi (1904-1972), a student of Kodaly, originally wrote Aria for cello or clarinet and piano. Subsequently the solo part has been transcribed for violin (arranged by Susanne Bank) and viola (arranged by Martin Fischer). The original version, an elegiac, cantabile concert piece * many rhythmic and melodical features are influenced by Kodaly and Hungarian folk-music * requires a beautiful tone and a freely drawn-out tempos with plenty of rubato from the performer.

Concerto da Camera II is a work for six instruments which may be further grouped into three separate entities - clarinet, string quartet, piano. In this combination, chosen by the work's commissioning organizations (the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in conjunction with Mount Holyoke College), lies the work's first challenge. While pairings of any two of these three sound types abound in the concert literature, the three together form a far less common soundscape. The main difficulty appears in the necessity to reconcile the potential of both the clarinet and the piano of acting in a soloistic capacity when pitted against the string quartet. Indeed, the three movements of the Concerto deal with this problem in various ways, with the balance of power between the six instruments' potential for unity and contrast, solo and ensemble playing, continually shifting and changing. Yet another, more delicate, balance of power is at play here, namely, the relationship between the external, foreground level of the piece and a subtler background level. What, at first, appear like small, gentle melodic strands, mere echoes or residues of the main events, gradually assume an inner life of their own. Never actually taking over yet always there, a salient, if quiet, factor within the work's compositional fabric and evolving organism. Though each movement includes numerous tempo fluctuations, the overall thrust of the work clearly suggests a fast-slow-fast framework, with the last movement being a loosely structured, occasionally tempestuous Rondo.

An early (1938) non-spatial work by Henry Brant, whose Ice Field won the Pulitzer Prize for Music, Whoopee in D is scored for a modestlysized orchestra of single winds, 2 clarinets, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, trombone, piano, percussion (1 player) and strings. The piece satirizes the standard light opera/musical comedy type of overture. The composer describes it as the prelude to a comic-strip opera as revealed in a nightmare. In a brief and rollicking four minutes, Brant takes a fragment of Bach's accompanying melody from the choral prelude Wachet auf! (also familiar from its use in Cantata No. 140) and subjects it to several clever parody-variations in polka, rumba and march style. A tour de force for a chamber orchestra, Whoopee in D has always been a great audience pleaser. Orchestral parts are available on rental.
