The musical Miss Saigon has touched millions of hearts worldwide. This is partly due to the romantic, yet equally tragic, love story set in war-torn Vietnam during 1975, and partly to the emotional and engaging music by Claude-Michel Schönberg. The myth of El Dorado (“the golden one”) stems from the story of a powerful chief who used to cover himself with gold dust before bathing in a sacred lake where he threw precious objects as offerings to the gods. The myth was soon relayed to the Spanish conquistadors and inspired many expeditions, although the invaders didn’t bring back nearly as much gold as they expected, if any at all. Eldorado is a mysterious and dynamic work that illustrates the myth of the golden man and the European expeditions that followed. With a touch of exotic influences, the music is varied and rich. This piece was commissioned by the French Cultural Association Lille 3000 as part of theirEldorado-themed festival in 2019.

De mythe van El Dorado (de man van goud) is het verhaal van een machtig opperhoofd die zichzelf met goudpoeder bedekte voordat hij ging baden in een heilig meer waar hij ook kostbare voorwerpen aan de goden offerde. Deze mythe werd al snel bekend bij de Spaanse conquistadores en vormde de aanzet tot vele expedities, hoewel de veroveraars niet met grote hoeveelheden goud terugkwamen, zoals ze hadden gehoopt. Eldorado is een mysterieus, dynamisch werk dat het verhaal van de gouden man verklankt, alsmede de Europese expedities die op touw werden gezet. Met een vleugje exotische invloeden is de muziek gevarieerd en rijk aan schakeringen. Het werk werd geschreven in opdrachtvan de Franse culturele organisatie Lille 3000 als onderdeel van het thematische programma Eldorado in 2019.

Der Mythos von El Dorado (der Goldene“) handelt von einem mächtigen Herrscher, der sich vor dem Baden in einem heiligen See mit Goldstaub bedeckte und als Opfergaben an die Götter kostbare Gegenstände in den See warf. Der Mythos sprach sich bald bei den spanischen Eroberern herum und war der Grund für zahlreiche Expeditionen doch sie fanden nicht annähernd so viel Gold, wie sie erhofft hatten. Eldorado ist ein geheimnisvolles und dynamisches Werk, das den Mythos des goldenen Mannes“ und die daraus resultierenden Expeditionen der Europäer darstellt. Durch ethnische Anklänge ist die Musik sehr abwechslungsreich. Dieses Stück wurde vom französischen Kulturverein Lille3000 für den Themenschwerpunkt Eldorado“ im Jahr 2019 in Auftrag gegeben.

Ce mythe a rapidement été relayé par les conquistadors espagnols et est l'origine de nombreuses expéditions. Mais les envahisseurs rapportèrent beaucoup moins d'or qu'ils n'espéraient. la fois mystérieuse et dynamique, Eldorado est une œuvre qui dépeint le mythe de l’homme doré et les expéditions européennes qu’il inspira. Gr ce ses échos ethniques, la musique est riche et variée. Cette œuvre est une commande de l’association culturelle Lille 3000 pour l’éditionthématique Eldorado du festival 2019.

In het jaar 2013 worden de gebroeders Grimm herdacht naar aanleiding van de sterfdatum - 150 jaar geleden - van Jacob. Samen met zijn broer Wilhelm verzamelde hij wereldberoemde sprookjes als Roodkapje, Doornroosje, Sneeuwwitje en Repelsteeltje, enstelde ze op schrift. De gebroeders waren allebei werkzaam als taalkundige: hun grote betekenis voor de Duitse taal in het algemeen wordt wereldwijd erkend. Het baanbrekende werk dat zij op taalkundig gebied verrichtten, omvat onder meer desamenstelling van een woordenboek. Jacob publiceerde bovendien een uitgave over de Duitse grammatica.
Vier sprookjes van Grimm staan centraal in dit ‘Singspiel’, dat is geschreven op initiatief van de Bläserphilharmonie Rhein-Main. De gebruikte nieuwe tekstversie is van de hand van de Finse schrijfster Anni Komppa. Het sprookje De gouden sleutelopent als het ware op symbolische wijze de drie overige verhalen - respectievelijk Roodkapje, Repelsteeltje en Doornroosje. Het ‘sleutelmotief’ wordt tot klinken gebracht via een verfijnde en ‘rinkelende’ instrumentatie. De originele verhaallijnenworden grotendeels gevolgd, maar het geheel is ingekort om de uitvoerbaarheid niet uit het oog te verliezen. Zang en gesproken tekst wisselen elkaar voortdurend af, en ook het orkest heeft een belangrijke rol, zodat het geheel gevarieerd is quainhoud én qua klankkleur. Ook puur muzikaal is er veel diversiteit in dit werk te beleven: van lieflijk tot angstaanjagend, van dromerig tot bombastisch en grotesk, van schilderend tot triomfantelijk... de fantasiewereld die in sprookjes wordtopgeroepen bevat inderdaad vele facetten.
Het werk ging in première op 29 september 2013 in het Duitse Hanau, in een uitvoering door solisten, een groot kinderkoor en de Bläserphilharmonie Rhein-Main, onder leiding van Jens Weismantel. Het is opgedragen aan Anni Komppa en JensWeismantel.
Deze compositie kan ook zuiver concertant uitgevoerd worden en biedt daarnaast mogelijkheden voor een (half )scenische aanpak.
De Nederlandstalige versie is van de hand van Fred Brouwers.

In diesem Singspiel, das zu Ehren des 150. Todestages von Jacob Grimm im Jahr 2013 komponiert wurde, wechseln Gesang und gesprochener Text einander fortlaufend ab und auch das Orchester spielt eine wichtige Rolle, sodass das Gesamtwerk inhaltlich undklanglich abwechslungsreich ist. Es war einmal ... kann auch konzertant aufgeführt werden und bietet außerdem Möglichkeiten für eine (teilweise) szenische Umsetzung.

Es war einmal ... (Il était une fois) s’inspire de quatre contes de Grimm : La Clé d’or, Le Petit Chaperon rouge, La Belle au bois dormant et Le nain Tracassin. Chants et narration alternent sans interruption, tandis quel’orchestre joue un rôle capital dans cette pièce au contenu et aux sonorités très variés : sons harmonieux ou terrifiants, ambiance rêveuse, majestueuse ou grotesque, climat pittoresque ou triomphant... Cette composition, qui peut être interprétéeinstrumentalement, se prête également une mise en scène partielle. Les textes sont en allemand et en flamand. In quest’opera buffa che è stata composta per ricordare il 150° anniversario della morte di Jacob Grimm nel 2013, il testo cantato e quello recitato si alternano continuamente. L’orchestra riveste un ruolo importante creando un brano completo, concontenuti e melodie molto variegate. Es war einmal … può essere rappresentato anche in forma sinfonica e offre anche delle possibilit per una (parziale) trasformazione scenica. Il testo per la voce recitante è disponibile al momento in fi ammingo etedesco, quello in lingua inglese è in preparazione.

The Cherubic Hymn is the primary cherubikon, or song of the angels, sung during every Divine Liturgy of the year except those of Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday. It occurs after the Gospel reading and is interrupted by the Great Entrance. During the period of the fourth to sixth centuries, the shape of the Eastern Divine Liturgy reached its fi nal form under the gidance of liturgists such as St. John Chrysostom. In this same period the major formative changes occurred, most of which resulted in liturgical components that corresponded to the Church's developing theological understanding. Among them were the hymn Only-Begotten Son and the addition of the Nicean-Constantinopolitan Creed (countering heresies), and The Trisagion Hymn refl ecting the Trinitarian theology being currently defi ned. In this period and on through the ninth century, hymns were composed and added to the Divine Liturgy, such as the Cherubic Hymn, sung while the priest recited the prayer that is now called The Prayer of the Cherubic Hymn.

This major concert work cosists o five movements.1st movement: La Laguna del ShimbeSituated high up in the Andes mountains in Northern Peru are the Huaringas, a group of lagoons in isolated and mysterious surroundings. The water has healing powersand for centuries traditional healers have settled there in small villages. From far the sick come to the Huaringas to be treated in nightly rituals, in which the hallucinating juice of the San Pedro cactus gives the prophet a look inside hispatient. The biggest lagoon is the “Laguna del Shimbe”, one of the countless wells of the immense Amazon stream.2nd movement: Los AguarunasFurther downstream in Northern Peru we come across the rain tribe of Los Aguarunas. It’s a proud, beautiful andindependent race, which has never succumbed to domination, not even from the Incas. They live from everything the forest has to offer: fish, fruit, plants, ... . They also grow some crops and live as semi-nomads. They take their fate into their ownhands and after having made contact with modern civilisation, they have integrated new elements into their lives without betraying their own ways.3rd movement: MekaronMekaron is an Indian word meaning “picture”, “soul”, “essence”. The Indians are theorigina inhabitants of the Amazon region. They either live in one place as a group or move around a large region. They all have their own political system, their own language and an intense social life. At the same time they are master of music andmedicine. “Everywhere the white man goes, he leaves a wilderness behind him”, wrote the North American Indian leader Seatl in 1885. As a result of these contacts with the whites, the disruption of most Indian societies began. (In this century alone,80 tribes have vanished completely).4th movement: KêêtuajêThis is the name of the initiating ceremony of the Krahô tribe in the Brazilian state of Goias, in which young boys and girls enter adult life. They are cleansed with water, painted with redpaint and covered with feathers, after which the ritual dance holds the entire tribe spell-bound.5th movement: Paulino FaiakanIn 1988 the Indian chiefs Faiakan and Raoni Kaiapo came to Europe to protest against the building of the Altamira dam inBrazil. As a result of the dam the Indians would be driven from their traditional land and enormous artificial would be created. The project was supported financially by, amongst others, the European Community. In February 1989 the Indian tribesaround Altamira held a protest march for the first time in their history together. Amongst other things they paid tribute tot Chico Mendez, who, murdered in 1988, was the leader of the rubber syndicate and a fierce opponent of the destruction of theBrazilian rain forest. Brazilian and world opinion was awakened. The building of the dam was -albeit temporarily - stopped.
