Use this chart to introduce your students to the relaxed swing feeling of an important era of jazz history. Expert scoring enables your horns and rhythm section to achieve the dynamic balance, clarity, and bounce that are essential to the style. Flexible orchestration allows it to be played by as few as 9 players. Additionally, everyone in the ensemble has an opportunity to improvise in the open solo section, and the set includes two suggested solos and a CD with a solo practice track, to facilitate successful improvisation.

A beautiful jazz chorale sets the stage for this straight-ahead chart. As you might guess from the title, the main part of this tune and the solo section are based on the two minor chords that Coltrane used in his classic modal composition Impressions. The 32-bar AABA structure of the original has been compressed to 16 bars to make it easier for younger players.

About the work ... Few American poems are as well known as The Road Not Taken. Robert Frost, the author, is an international icon, not unlike Pablo Picasso, Winston Churchill or Mark Twain in their own disciplines. The poem is full of contradictions and quirks of form and structure. Perhaps that illusiveness is part of the poem's intrigue. But beyond all of the literary devices that only a few scholars may fully appreciate, this poem has taken on a sort of fanfare for the common person credo - a challenge to individualism, stepping out on one's own, and breaking the mold out of sheer determination if nothing else. Frost connects to the core of the human spirit in just a few stanzas using the analogy of a fork in a road. The message super cedes geography, culture, race or creed. Rather, it is part of the DNA of most every person on the planet - the inner desire to feel empowered to create one's own destiny, to forge a road not taken, and ultimately in doing so, to make a difference. Rehearsal notes ... Research strongly suggests that there is a direct connection between the first rehearsal and the performance. First impressions last. I find it helpful to immediately lock three concepts into place - mechanics (notes/rhythms), text/phrasing (intent and motivation) and color (timbre). Performers need to think musically from the first reading forward (first impression). The cello is very much a collaborative instrument in this work, and should be located in front of the ensemble (not to side). Lastly, let the text speak. The simplest melodic lines are often the most exposed. Keep the voices clear and transparent, floating over the top in softer passages, and singing with vibrancy and forward focus throughout. Z. Popcatepetl, “Smoke Mountain†in Aztec, is a dormant volcano which the Mexican people affectionately call “POPO.†This dormant volcano in Mexico is on the boundary between the states of Mexico and Pueblo. In 1921 Popocatepetl belched smoke and gas for several months. Since then is has occasionally emitted the smoke and sulfurous vapors that earned its Aztec name. This suite is my musical impression of the Aztec volcano. The piece is divided into three scenes. The first scene, Prologue, is the first impression formed when you first come upon the volcano. The emotions range from fear to excitement to respect for nature. This scene should be played with spirit and every rhythmically. The second scene, Ballad. represents my feelings after the initial emotions have faded. One is quickly relaxed by the beauty of the volcano and its surroundings. This scene is scored in a dance-band style with lush sounding harmonics. This section of the composition should be played very slowly and with a relaxed feeling. The third scene, Introduction and Samba, is the emotion of joy utilizing Latin rhythms. This scene takes advantage of all of the color and rhythms associated with Mexico. Samba opens with a fanfare which is the main theme on which the whole scene is developed. This section should be played very crisply and rhythmically.Particular attention should be paid to all of the dynamic expressions even though the scoring will in most cases achieve dynamic changes.

Miguel Llobet's famous Catalan plucked string orchestra called the 'Lira Orfeo' was active in Barcelona from 1899-1906. Here we present a new engraving of all the surviving original scores, set in the same performing score format in which they were originally used 120 years ago. The Lira Orfeo quickly became an important part of Barcelona's cultural scene; with Tárrega as its honorary president the Lira Orfeo society was founded in 1898 and an official inaugural concert, shared between Manuel Burgés (pno) and Miguel Llobet (gtr) took place in Barcelona in 1898. The aim of the society was to offer a full musical education, both theoretical and instrumental, for guitarists and players of other plucked instrument family, with eventually with a place in its Catalan plucked instrument orchestra of the same name. The teachers for guitar were Miguel Llobet, Pedro Lloret and Domingo Prat. Prominent musicians such as Manuel Burgés and Baldomera Cateura were also on the teaching staff. Classes were given three times a week, and as the players were mainly amateurs with day jobs, these took place in the evening and often went on until 2 o'clock in the morning. The debut of the orchestra took place in 1903 and it gave regular concerts at top venues right up to the society's dissolution in 1907, mainly due to lack of funding. For the instruments used see the list of works below. The repertoire is varied, selected, arranged by Miguel Llobet it was mainly drawn from traditional and impressionist Iberian music, as well as the German classics, it includes a specially commissioned work Triomphe d'Orphée' by the famous Catalán pianist Manuel Burgés. We at Guitar Heritage are proud to present the first publication of this huge cultural contribution to music in its original form and prepared from the source manuscripts which were the work of Miguel Llobet. The edition has many illustrations, rare documents and photographs as well as a comprehensive critical commentary by Stefano Grondona - whose knowledge of Miguel Llobet, as well as of Catalonian culture, has made an edition of this scope possible. These arrangements are superb and presented as they originally were in the same score form. The now relatively rare instruments called for can be replaced by suitable alternatives - this is ideal and interesting material for adapting to guitar orchestra/ensemble or mandolin orchestra, or similar.

Written in 2010 for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Wigglesworth's nine-minute work explores the idea of perpetuum mobile (continuous movement) in seven connected, miniature inventions. A regular pulse forms the work's core, with elaborations of the central musical idea shifting constantly around it in jagged rhythms and sumptuous orchestration. The composer writes, The seven sections can very briefly be described thus: 1) an active, miniature 'theme and variations'; 2) the juxtaposition of various fragmentary two-part inventions; 3) a tremolo string ostinato with woodwind interjections, building towards the first climax; 4) an ostinato passing between horns and muted trumpets together with a dialogue for high woodwind and low strings; 5) a very slow canon for string harmonics and pizzicato double basses; 6) a fast, one-part invention beginning with solo piccolo, and gradually leading to the second climax; 7) chorale. This is a lively orchestral miniature which gives the impression of a kaleidoscope, with short musical ideas cutting across each other in quick succession.

The Piano music of Jean Sibelius ranks among the greatest of Finnish music, and his 1924 set Five Charactereistic Impressions demonstrates his importance. The first of this set, The Village Church is a ceremonial theme bringing to mind the oaccasions and events that surround a small place of worship and that is perfect for ushering in the start of a programme. An impressionist piece that captures the imagery of reality with tonality, colour and a solemn pace.
