When Karl King was conducting circus bands he would frequently edit his marches so the same composition could be used for contrasting acts (for example a lion act one time, and a trapeze act the next). In the same spirit, Thomas Leslie has creatively repurposed this familiar march to suit an imaginary clown act; complete with novelty percussion sounds and a few surprises sprinkled in. A bit outrageous, but definitely fun! Dur: c. 2:20.

THE BONES OF MR. FORTUNE (FREE AT LAST!) is an 11-minute concerto-like work for solo flute accompanied by symphonic winds and percussion – perfect to play with band or with orchestra, as well as with the composer’s own piano reduction. The work features lengthy cadenzas, and exhilarating dance-like sections with the ensemble. Hailstork describes the historical inspiration: Abused in life and death, an enslaved man (Mr. Fortune) was owned by a surgeon who preserved his skeleton to study anatomy. The bones remained with the doctor’s family for generations, and were given a proper burial making national news in 2013, 215 years after Mr. Fortune’s death.
Abused in life and death, an enslaved man known as Mr. Fortune was honored with an elaborate funeral more than 200 years after he died in Connecticut.Mr. Fortune was owned by Dr. Preserved Porter on a farm in Waterbury, Connecticut. When Fortune died in 1798, Porter, a bone surgeon, preserved his skeleton by having the bones boiled to study anatomy at a time when cadavers for medical study were disproportionately taken from slaves, servants and prisoners.One of Porter’s descendants gave the skeleton in 1933 to Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, where it was displayed from the 1940s until 1970. The descendant referred to the slave as “Larry” and his name was forgotten at the time.A study by forensic anthropologists at the Quinnipiac University School of Medicine concluded that Fortune was about 5 feet 5 inches tall and died at around 55 years old. He suffered a number of painful ailments, including a fracture in his left hand, a severe ankle sprain and lower back pain. “He was an individual who was in considerable distress,” a forensic professor, Richard Gonzalez said.I was taken by the bizarre story of Mr. Fortune and decided to use it as the stimulus for this work.

This short quartet, lasting a mere eight minutes in performance, consists of three sections that can be played aleatorically. Ideally, the piece should be performed more than once in a concert, as the 'points of fracture' (Splitterungen) appear to have quite divergent causes, leaving the listener with very different impressions when the order is changed.

One World deals with a fractured world (populist governments, plagues, climate change, human trafficking, disrespect for basic humanrights, terrorism, war) and heralds a vision of a peaceful and egalitarian planet. The work is best encapsulated by one of the textsset: “Tikkun Olam”, Hebrew for “repair the world”, a Jewish concept of stewardship over God’s creation. Scored for soloists, chorus and orchestra in Jenkins's inimitable style familiar from such works as Adiemus: Songs of Sanctuary, The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, Requiem and The Peacemakers. His vision for One World takes inspiration from diverse texts including the Bible, the Hindu Gayatri Mantra, the poetry of the English Romantic Percy Bysshe Shelley, African-American abolitionist Frances Harper (c1850) and Lebanese-American writer Kahlil Gibran. As in many of Jenkins's works, Carol Barratt contributes impactful text and adaptations. Rehearsal Suggestions:Sunrise March is so named for the opening motive, which quickly ascends like the rising sun. Playable at the end of the first year of instruction, the march offers several teaching tools: independent parts playing in imitation or call and response, dynamic markings, staccato and accent markings, and limited accidentals. Every group gets the melody at some point. This would make a great selection for the end of year concert (especially a demonstration-style concert), or for taking to an adjudicated festival. This prepares students for more traditional full-length concert marches. Keep that in mind when rehearsing.Make sure students observe the articulation and dynamic markings in mm. 6 and 7. Notice the slurs over the 4-3 suspension in m. 10. Where optional divisi is marked in the low brass or reed voices, the division is preferred, but if necessary, play only the lower notes. Pay careful attention to balance at m. 23. The melody is always the most important.Note the accidentals in mm. 29 and 30. This is a great place to reinforce accidentals through repeated notes. After m. 31, note that the melody is fractured, and students will need to count multi-rests and know where the melody is. Focus on a full sound from m. 47 to the end. The stinger note in the low voices at the end should be played for its full value and release with a vowel sound, not the tongue!

This is an abstract recasting of tenor saxophone giant Coleman Hawkins' remarkable 1948 unaccompanied tenor saxophone improvisation Picasso.
