Song of Friendship was commissioned by the Concert Band of Jumonji University, Saitama, Japan and their conductor, Yutaka Nishida. The commission marked the 50th year of Yutaka Nishida’s involvement with bands as a player, conductor and radio presenter. The ceremonial Song of Friendship opens with an extended fanfare, largely featuring the brass section. This leads to the main theme, which develops slowly until it is played by the full band. A change of key signals a contrasting central section containing a quiet woodwind chorale, which grows until the return of the triumphant sounding main theme. Elements of the opening fanfare then close the work.

Song of Friendship werd geschreven voor het harmonieorkest van de Jumonji University in Saitama, Japan, en dirigent Yutaka Nishida. De opdracht markeerde tevens het vijftigste jaar dat Yutaka Nishida al actief was met blaasorkesten als muzikant, dirigent en radiopresentator. Song of Friendship opent met een uitgebreide fanfare waarin vooral de kopersectie aan het woord is. Dit gedeelte leidt naar het hoofdthema, dat geleidelijk verder wordt uitgewerkt tot het door het volledige orkest wordt gespeeld. Een modulatie kondigt een contrasterend middendeel aan, met een rustig koraal in het hout dat zich verder ontwikkelt tot aan de terugkeer van hettriomfantelijk klinkende hoofdthema. Het werk wordt afgesloten met elementen uit de openingsfanfare.

Das Auftragswerk steht auch für Yutaka Nishidas über 50-jähriges Engagement im Bereich der Blasmusik als Musiker, Dirigent und Radiomoderator. Das feierliche Stück Song of Friendship beginnt mit einer ausgedehnten Fanfare, die vor allem die Blechbläser herausstellt. Diese führt zum Hauptthema, das sich langsam entwickelt, bis es schließlich vom gesamten Orchester gespielt wird. Ein Tonartwechsel leitet den gegensätzlichen Hauptteil mit einem ruhigen Choral in den Holzbläsern ein, der sich bis zur Wiederkehr destriumphierenden Hauptthemas langsam weiterentwickelt. Das Werk endet mit Elementen aus der Eröffnungsfanfare.

Song of Friendship est une commande de l’orchestre d’harmonie de l’Université de Jumonji, Saitama, Japon, et de leur chef Yutaka Nishida. La commande marque aussi la 50e année de l’engagement de Yutaka Nishida avec des bands, que ce soit comme joueur, chef d’orchestre ou présentateur radio. Le cérémonial Song of Friendship commence par une longue fanfare, mettant en scène en particulier les cuivres. Ceci nous mène au thème principal qui se développe ensuite graduellement jusqu’ une interprétation par l’ensemble entier. Une modulation signale le début de la section centrale contrastante. Elle se caractérise par un choral calme pour les bois qui se développeensuite jusqu’au retour du triomphant thème principal. Des éléments de la fanfare du début finissent alors l’œuvre.

Il celebrativo Song of Friendship si apre con un esteso tema di fanfara che presenta ampiamente la sezione degli ottoni. Questo conduce al tema principale, che si sviluppa gradualmente fino all’esecuzione da parte di tutta la banda. Un cambio di tonalit anticipa una contrastante sezione centrale che contiene un calmo corale di legni che cresce fino al ritorno trionfante del tema principale. Gli elementi musicali della fanfara d’apertura concludono l’opera.

The Tower of Pisa is beyond doubt the most famous and legendary tower in the world. The main motif symbolizes the three bells of the tower. The motif is transformed throughout the piece in which the spectacular effect of a downward motive playedagainst sustained chords, symbolizing the leaning tower, is used. The finale portrays a parade of all bands from around Pisa coming to town to celebrate, accompanied by the bells of the tower!

De Toren van Pisa is zonder twijfel de beroemdste en meest legendarische toren van de wereld. In dit werk symboliseert het hoofdmotief de drie klokken van de toren. Dit hoofdthema wordt gaandeweg getransformeerd, terwijl halverwege de compositieeen spectaculair neerwaarts motief tegenover aangehouden akkoorden staat voor het scheef hellen van de toren. De finale weerspiegelt een optocht van blaasorkesten uit de omgeving, op weg naar Pisa om er feest te vieren, begeleid door hetklokkenmotief!

Der Schiefe Turm von Pisa gehört zweifellos zu den berühmtesten und legendärsten Türmen der Welt. Das Hauptmotiv des Stückes symbolisiert die drei Glocken des Turms. Das Thema mit dem großartigen Effekt eines abwärtsgehenden Motivs, welches denschiefen Turm symbolisiert, im Kontrast zu den gehaltenen Akkorden, kehrt im gesamten Stück in verschiedenen Versionen wieder. Das Finale stellt eine Parade aller Orchester aus der Umgebung von Pisa dar, die zum Feiern in die Stadt kommen und von denGlocken des Turms begleitet werden!

La tour de Pise est sans doute la tour la plus célèbre et légendaire du monde. Le motif principal symbolise les trois cloches de la tour et est transformé tout au long du morceau. En contraste aux accords soutenus, une impression descendante estcréée par un autre motif qui symbolise la tour inclinée. Le final dépeint une parade de tous les orchestres des alentours de Pise qui se rassemblent en ville pour célébrer, accompagnées par les cloches de la tour !

Quella di Pisa è, con ogni probabilit , la più famosa torre al mondo. Il leitmotif del brano di de Haan simbolizza le tre campane della torre, mentre tutta l’opera mantiene un andamento fluttuante capace di rendere pienamente il senso di pendenza della torre. Il finale illustra una grande parata alla quale partecipano tutte le bande dei dintorni della citt , festanti e accompagnate dal suono gioioso delle campane.

Marcho Brioso was commissioned by The Brioso Brass, a British-style brass band from Hokkaido, Japan. They gave the first performance in January 2012.The commission was for a bright and breezy march that the band could use as their theme tune, so Marcho Brioso falls into the composer’s series of Broadway-style marches, which includes Slipstream, The Bandwagon and Jubiloso. After a short introduction a solo cornet plays the main theme, accompanied by a euphonium counter-melody. A secondary phrase from the horns and baritones leads to a tutti version of the main theme which is followed by the traditional ‘bass’ strain. A change of key heralds the triosection, which features a cantabile melody on euphonium; this is then taken up by the full band after a short bridge passage and further change of key.This takes us back to the home key which sees a quiet staccato version of the main theme lead to a recapitulation and a short coda which brings the march to a close.

Marcho Brioso is geschreven in opdracht van The Brioso Brass, een brassband in Britse stijl uit Hokkaido in Japan. Marcho Brioso wurde von The Brioso Brass, einer britisch geprägten Brass Band aus Hokkaido in Japan, in Auftrag gegeben. So fällt Marcho Brioso in die Reihe der Märsche des Komponisten im Broadway-Stil, zu denen auch Slipstream, The Bandwagon und Jubiloso zählen.Nach einer kurzen Einleitung spielt ein Solo-Cornet das Hauptthema, begleitet von einer Gegenmelodie im Euphonium. Die Nebenphrase in den Hörnern und Baritonen führen zu einer Tutti-Version des Hauptthemas, die vomtraditionellen Bass“-Solo abgelöst wird. Ein Tonartwechsel kündigt den Trio-Teil an, der eine cantabile gespielte Melodie auf dem Euphonium enthält; diese wiederum wird nach einer kurzen Überleitung und einem weiteren Tonartwechsel von der gesamten Band aufgegriffen.Der letzte Wechsel führt zurück zur ursprünglichen Tonart, in welcher dann eine Staccato-Version des Hauptthemas eine Rekapitulation hervorbringt sowie eine Coda, die den Marsch zu seinem Ende führt.

Marcho Brioso est une œuvre de commande pour le Brioso Brass, un Brass Band de style britannique basé Hokkaido, au Japon. La création mondiale de cette pièce eut lieu en janvier 2012.L’orchestre souhaitant une marche enjouée qui pourrait lui servir d’indicatif musical, Marcho Brioso s’inscrit dans la lignée des marches du compositeur : Jubiloso, Slipstream et The Bandwagon. Un style « broadwayien », des motifs fortement syncopés et quelques surprenantes et capricieuses mesures viennent troubler le rythme régulièrement cadencé de ces marches.Après une courte introduction, le cornet solo joue le thème principal, accompagné d’un contre-chant l’euphonium. Un second motif de huit mesures exécuté par les cors et les barytons mène une version tutti du thème principal. Puis une brève section intermédiaire est déléguée aux basses. Le changement de tonalité qui s’ensuit annonce le trio qui contient une mélodie cantabile confiée l’euphonium ; ce trio est ensuite repris par l’orchestre entier après un bref passage de transition et un autre changement de tonalité.Nous revenons ensuite la tonalité de départ pour un rappel du thème principal en une paisible version staccato et une courte coda, pour conclure cette marche brillante et sémillante.

Named after the leaf displayed on Canada’s flag, Maple Leaf Overture was composed specifically to open a Canadian school’s symphonic band tour of England. A short fanfare during the overture smoothly transitions to a jazzy, syncopated section. The main theme is first played by the horns and saxophones, and then by the entire ensemble. This lively theme then alternates with a slower second theme, building momentum before a brisk coda culminates in a rousing finale!

Maple Leaf Overture gaat natuurlijk over het bekendste herkenningsteken van Canada: het blad van de esdoorn, in de vlag. Sparke componeerde dit openingswerk speciaal voor een Canadees schoolorkest uit Calgary, voor hun tour door Groot-Brittannië.Een korte fanfare gaat in deze ouverture naadloos over in een jazzachtig, syncopisch vivo. Eerst nemen de hoorns en saxofoons het hoofdthema voor hun rekening. Daarna speelt het hele orkest dit thema. Spanning ontstaatwanneer het snelle hoofdthema een langzaam tweede deel afwisselt. Daarna keert het snelle hoofdthema weer terug. Een snel coda beëindigt de ouverture. Maple Leaf Overture: feestelijk en sprankelend!

Maple Leaf Overture trägt das kanadische Wahrzeichen, das Ahornblatt im Titel. Eine kurze Fanfare geht in dieser Ouvertüre nahtlos in eine jazzig synkopiertes Vivo über. Das Hauptthema dürfen erst die Hörner und Saxophone vorstellen, dann spielt das gesamte Blasorchester. Es entsteht Spannung durch den Wechsel zwischen dem schnellen Hauptthema, einem langsameren zweiten Thema und zurück, bevor eine schnellere Coda das Werk beendet.

Maple Leaf Overture porte l’emblème du Canada (la feuille d’érable) jusque dans son titre… Ce morceau, composé par Philip Sparke, a été joué par l’Orchestre Symphonique du Lycée de Calgary dans le cadre de sa tournée en Angleterre. La pièce s’ouvre avec une fanfare maestoso, puis un passage en tempo vivo introduit peu peu des rythmes syncopés de style jazzy. Un motif plus doux nous conduira progressivement vers un apogée où le thème central réapparaît. Le morceau se termine par une brève référence la fanfare d’ouverture, suivie d’une rapide coda.

Maple Leaf Overture, il cui titolo riporta all’emblema della bandiera canadese (la foglia di acero), è un brano commissionato a Philip Sparke dall’Orchestra Sinfonica di un liceo di Calgary che l’ha eseguita in occasione di una serie di concerti tenutisi in Inghilterra. Il brano apre con una fanfara maestosa che alterna fraseggi affidati alle varie sezioni della banda. Questa successione omogenea in un tempo vivo introduce progressivamente ritmi sincopati in stile jazz. Un tema principale, all’inizio eseguito dai corni e dai sassofoni, sar in seguito ripreso da tutto l’organico. Segue un motivo più dolce che si intercala progressivamente verso un’apoteosi nella qualeviene riproposto il tema principale. Il brano si conclude con un breve richiamo alla fanfara di apertura, seguita da una rapida coda.

Guardians of the Waves was commissioned by the Japan Coast Guard Band to celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2018. They gave the premiere as part of a 30th anniversary concert on November 8th that year. Set in traditionalmarch form, Guardians of the Waves opens with a short introduction, which leads to the main theme, played initially by the brass and then repeated with a florid woodwind descant. The theme is extended and morphs into asecond theme, first played tutti and then quietly repeated by bassoon, tenor sax and euphonium. This leads to a conventional ‘bass strain’, played twice with varying accompaniments. A quieter trio section follows, delicatelyscored and featuring the tenor instruments of the band. Taken up by the full band, this leads back to a recall of the introduction and a return to the main two themes, which lead to a triumphal close.

Dit thema voert ons mee naar een conventionele baslijn, die twee keer wordt gespeeld metvariërende begeleiding. Daarna volgt een kalmer triogedeelte, dat delicaat is getoonzet en waarin de tenorinstrumenten van het orkest ruimschoots aan bod komen. Het wordt dan overgenomen door het complete orkest en brengt onsterug naar de inleiding en de twee hoofdthema’s, uitmondend in een triomfantelijk slot.

Guardians of the Waves wurde von der Japan Coast Guard Band anlässlich ihres 30-jährigen Bestehens im Jahr 2018 in Auftrag gegeben. Die Uraufführung fand am 8. November 2018 im Rahmen eines Jubiläumskonzertes statt.Guardians of the Waves wurde als traditioneller Marsch komponiert und beginnt mit einer kurzen Einleitung, die zum Hauptthema führt. Dieses wird zunächst von den Blechbläsern gespielt und dann von den Oberstimmen in denHolzbläsern mit Verzierungen wiederholt. Das Thema wird erweitert und geht in ein zweites Thema über, das zunächst vom Tutti gespielt und dann von Fagott, Tenorsaxophon und Euphonium leise wiederholt wird. Anschließend erklingteine traditionelle Melodie in den Bassinstrumenten, die mit unterschiedlicher Begleitung zweimal gespielt wird. Es folgt ein ruhigeres Trio, das zart besetzt ist und die Tenorinstrumente des Blasorchesters hervorhebt. Dies wirdschließlich vom gesamten Blasorchester aufgegriffen und führt zu einer Wiederholung der Einleitung und einer Rückkehr zu den beiden Hauptthemen, die in einen triumphalen Schluss überleiten.

Guardians of the Waves est une commande de l’Harmonie de la Gendarmerie maritime du Japon pour marquer son 30e anniversaire, en 2018. L’orchestre a créé l’œuvre dans le cadre d’un concert d’anniversaire le 8 novembre decette même année. Écrite en forme de marche traditionnelle, Guardians of the Waves s’ouvre avec une courte introduction qui mène au thème principal, interprété d’abord par les cuivres puis repris avec un déchant fleuri parles bois. Le thème est prolongé et se morphe en un second thème, d’abord en tutti, puis répété doucement par les bassons, saxophones ténor et euphoniums. Ce passage mène une mélodie conventionnelle dans les graves, jouée deuxfois avec divers accompagnements. Vient ensuite un trio plus calme, orchestré avec délicatesse et mettant en avant les instruments ténor. Repris par l’orchestre entier, ce passage est suivi d’un rappel de l’introduction avant unretour aux deux thèmes principaux, qui mènent une conclusion triomphale.

Sinfonia and Caprice is comprised of two contrasting sections. Both sections are characterised by the arrangement of the eight voices into two four-part groups that play in dialogue with each other.The first, slow movement is a Sinfonia in the baroque sense?a majestic opening work. With its dotted rhythms and semiquaver runs, the movement is reminiscent of a French overture. The fast second movement, the Caprice, features an almost unbroken galloping rhythm. In this section an energetic main theme in a minor key plays in alternation with a lyrical subsidiary major theme. The work closes with a triumphant fanfare.

Het werk Sinfonia and Caprice bestaat uit twee contrasterende gedeelten. Het arrangement van beide delen wordt gekenmerkt door de verdeling van de acht partijen in twee groepen van vier, die in dialoog met elkaar spelen.Het eerste, langzame deel is een majestueuze sinfonia in barokke sfeer. Met zijn gepunteerde ritmes en loopjes van zestiende noten doet dit deel denken aan een Franse ouverture. Het snelle twee deel, de caprice, omvat een bijna onafgebroken galopritme. In dit deel wordt een energiek hoofdthema in mineur afgewisseld door een lyrisch ondergeschikt thema in majeur. De compositie wordt afgesloten met een glorierijke fanfare.

Sinfonia and Caprice besteht aus zwei kontrastierenden Teilen. Typisch für beide Teile ist die Aufteilung der acht Stimmen in zwei vierstimmige Gruppen, die miteinander im Dialog stehen.Der erste, langsame Satz ist eine Sinfonia im barocken Sinne, also ein majestätisches Eröffnungsstück. Mit seinen punktierten Rhythmen und Sechzehntelfolgen erinnert der Satz im Charakter an eine französische Ouvertüre. Der schnelle zweite Teil, die Caprice, weist einen fast unablässig durchlaufenden Galopp-Rhythmus auf. In diesem Satz wechselt sich ein markiertes Hauptthema in Moll mit einem lyrischen Seitenthema in Dur ab. Das Werk endet mit einem fanfarenartigen,triumphalen Schluss.
