Marcho Brioso was commissioned by The Brioso Brass, a British-style brass band from Hokkaido, Japan. They gave the first performance in January 2012.The commission was for a bright and breezy march that the band could use as their theme tune, so Marcho Brioso falls into the composer’s series of Broadway-style marches, which includes Slipstream, The Bandwagon and Jubiloso. After a short introduction a solo cornet plays the main theme, accompanied by a euphonium counter-melody. A secondary phrase from the horns and baritones leads to a tutti version of the main theme which is followed by the traditional ‘bass’ strain. A change of key heralds the triosection, which features a cantabile melody on euphonium; this is then taken up by the full band after a short bridge passage and further change of key.This takes us back to the home key which sees a quiet staccato version of the main theme lead to a recapitulation and a short coda which brings the march to a close.

De première vond plaats in januari 2012.De componist kreeg het verzoek een vrolijke, luchtige mars te schrijven die de band als herkenningstune zou kunnen gebruiken. Marcho Brioso past daarom uitstekend in Philip Sparke’s serie van marsen in Broadwaystijl - waarin ook Slipstream, The Bandwagon en Jubiloso thuishoren.

Marcho Brioso wurde von The Brioso Brass, einer britisch geprägten Brass Band aus Hokkaido in Japan, in Auftrag gegeben. Das Stück wurde von der Band im Januar 2012 uraufgeführt.Gewünscht war ein heiterer, flotter Marsch, welcher sich als Erkennungsmelodie der Brass Band eignen sollte. So fällt Marcho Brioso in die Reihe der Märsche des Komponisten im Broadway-Stil, zu denen auch Slipstream, The Bandwagon und Jubiloso zählen.Nach einer kurzen Einleitung spielt ein Solo-Cornet das Hauptthema, begleitet von einer Gegenmelodie im Euphonium. Die Nebenphrase in den Hörnern und Baritonen führen zu einer Tutti-Version des Hauptthemas, die vomtraditionellen Bass“-Solo abgelöst wird. Ein Tonartwechsel kündigt den Trio-Teil an, der eine cantabile gespielte Melodie auf dem Euphonium enthält; diese wiederum wird nach einer kurzen Überleitung und einem weiteren Tonartwechsel von der gesamten Band aufgegriffen.Der letzte Wechsel führt zurück zur ursprünglichen Tonart, in welcher dann eine Staccato-Version des Hauptthemas eine Rekapitulation hervorbringt sowie eine Coda, die den Marsch zu seinem Ende führt.

Marcho Brioso est une œuvre de commande pour le Brioso Brass, un Brass Band de style britannique basé Hokkaido, au Japon. La création mondiale de cette pièce eut lieu en janvier 2012.L’orchestre souhaitant une marche enjouée qui pourrait lui servir d’indicatif musical, Marcho Brioso s’inscrit dans la lignée des marches du compositeur : Jubiloso, Slipstream et The Bandwagon. Un style « broadwayien », des motifs fortement syncopés et quelques surprenantes et capricieuses mesures viennent troubler le rythme régulièrement cadencé de ces marches.Après une courte introduction, le cornet solo joue le thème principal, accompagné d’un contre-chant l’euphonium. Un second motif de huit mesures exécuté par les cors et les barytons mène une version tutti du thème principal. Puis une brève section intermédiaire est déléguée aux basses. Le changement de tonalité qui s’ensuit annonce le trio qui contient une mélodie cantabile confiée l’euphonium ; ce trio est ensuite repris par l’orchestre entier après un bref passage de transition et un autre changement de tonalité.Nous revenons ensuite la tonalité de départ pour un rappel du thème principal en une paisible version staccato et une courte coda, pour conclure cette marche brillante et sémillante.

Named after the leaf displayed on Canada’s flag, Maple Leaf Overture was composed specifically to open a Canadian school’s symphonic band tour of England. A short fanfare during the overture smoothly transitions to a jazzy, syncopated section. The main theme is first played by the horns and saxophones, and then by the entire ensemble. This lively theme then alternates with a slower second theme, building momentum before a brisk coda culminates in a rousing finale!

Maple Leaf Overture gaat natuurlijk over het bekendste herkenningsteken van Canada: het blad van de esdoorn, in de vlag. Sparke componeerde dit openingswerk speciaal voor een Canadees schoolorkest uit Calgary, voor hun tour door Groot-Brittannië.Een korte fanfare gaat in deze ouverture naadloos over in een jazzachtig, syncopisch vivo. Eerst nemen de hoorns en saxofoons het hoofdthema voor hun rekening. Daarna speelt het hele orkest dit thema. Spanning ontstaatwanneer het snelle hoofdthema een langzaam tweede deel afwisselt. Daarna keert het snelle hoofdthema weer terug. Een snel coda beëindigt de ouverture. Maple Leaf Overture: feestelijk en sprankelend!

Maple Leaf Overture trägt das kanadische Wahrzeichen, das Ahornblatt im Titel. Eine kurze Fanfare geht in dieser Ouvertüre nahtlos in eine jazzig synkopiertes Vivo über. Das Hauptthema dürfen erst die Hörner und Saxophone vorstellen, dann spielt das gesamte Blasorchester. Es entsteht Spannung durch den Wechsel zwischen dem schnellen Hauptthema, einem langsameren zweiten Thema und zurück, bevor eine schnellere Coda das Werk beendet.

Maple Leaf Overture porte l’emblème du Canada (la feuille d’érable) jusque dans son titre… Ce morceau, composé par Philip Sparke, a été joué par l’Orchestre Symphonique du Lycée de Calgary dans le cadre de sa tournée en Angleterre. La pièce s’ouvre avec une fanfare maestoso, puis un passage en tempo vivo introduit peu peu des rythmes syncopés de style jazzy. Un motif plus doux nous conduira progressivement vers un apogée où le thème central réapparaît. Le morceau se termine par une brève référence la fanfare d’ouverture, suivie d’une rapide coda.

Maple Leaf Overture, il cui titolo riporta all’emblema della bandiera canadese (la foglia di acero), è un brano commissionato a Philip Sparke dall’Orchestra Sinfonica di un liceo di Calgary che l’ha eseguita in occasione di una serie di concerti tenutisi in Inghilterra. Il brano apre con una fanfara maestosa che alterna fraseggi affidati alle varie sezioni della banda. Questa successione omogenea in un tempo vivo introduce progressivamente ritmi sincopati in stile jazz. Un tema principale, all’inizio eseguito dai corni e dai sassofoni, sar in seguito ripreso da tutto l’organico. Segue un motivo più dolce che si intercala progressivamente verso un’apoteosi nella qualeviene riproposto il tema principale. Il brano si conclude con un breve richiamo alla fanfara di apertura, seguita da una rapida coda.

The assignment to write a test piece for the National Brass Band Championships ended up also being a ‘test piece’ for myself as a composer.
Although being quite familiar with the Brass Band phenomenon, as a composer I still have the feeling ofbeing an outsider.
Delta Energy turned out to be a non-program composition. The Brass Band as orchestra form is depicted musically in this piece. All the specific characteristics are portrayed in varying settings. Solo passages for Euphonium,Flugelhorn and Cornet alternating with extensive tutti-passages and of course technical highlights form the ingredients for this work written in rhapsodic form.

The title “Delta Energy” is derived from a project of the N.V. NederlandseGasunie in Groningen which also contributed in making this composition possible.

Delta Energy is een spectaculair en verfrissend concertwerk van Jan Bosveld (Nijmegen, Holland).
Het beleefde haar première als testpiece (3e divisie) ter gelegenheid van de Nederlandse Brassband Kampioenschappen (2002) te Groningen.

Decomponist heeft getracht een gevarieerd speelwerk te maken waarbij de mogelijkheden van het fenomeen brassband optimaal worden benut.
Delta Energy is abstract van opzet en heeft geen programmatische inhoud. Het werk bestaat uit 5 aaneengeslotendelen welke aan elkaar worden verbonden door cadensen van solisten of secties.

Een krachtig, ritmisch getint openingsmotief brengt ons al snel bij het hoofdthema gespeeld door de cornetsectie. Dit grillige en ritmische gedeelte wordtafgesloten door een cadens van de euphonium die ons in het tweede gedeelte brengt dat wederom zeer ritmisch van karakter is met een knipoog naar de Tarantella.
De flugelcadens zorgt ervoor dat er rust in het werk komt. Dit derde deel doet onsdenken aan een deel uit de Schilderijententoonstelling van Modest Moessorgsky, niet in de laatste plaats door de lyrische euhoniumsolo.
Een cadens van de cornetsectie verplaatst ons naar het 4e deel en daarmee naar de virtuositeit van debrassband.
De energie en de actie zetten de band en publiek op scherp in een zinderend feest. De korte trombonecadens zet de zaak nog eenmaal stil om in het 5e deel Delta Energy op spectaculaire wijze te beëindigen.
Een weergaloze compositie!

Guardians of the Waves was commissioned by the Japan Coast Guard Band to celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2018. They gave the premiere as part of a 30th anniversary concert on November 8th that year. Set in traditionalmarch form, Guardians of the Waves opens with a short introduction, which leads to the main theme, played initially by the brass and then repeated with a florid woodwind descant. The theme is extended and morphs into asecond theme, first played tutti and then quietly repeated by bassoon, tenor sax and euphonium. This leads to a conventional ‘bass strain’, played twice with varying accompaniments. A quieter trio section follows, delicatelyscored and featuring the tenor instruments of the band. Taken up by the full band, this leads back to a recall of the introduction and a return to the main two themes, which lead to a triumphal close.

Guardians of the Waves werd geschreven in opdracht van de Japan Coast Guard Band ter gelegenheid van het dertigjarig bestaan van dit orkest, in 2018. De première vond plaats tijdens het jubileumconcert op 8 november van datjaar. Het werk, dat is gecomponeerd in een traditionele marsvorm, begint met een korte introductie die het hoofdthema inleidt, dat aanvankelijk wordt gespeeld door het koper en dan wordt herhaald met een weelderige discant in hethout. Het thema wordt voortgezet en gaat over in een tweede thema, eerst tutti gespeeld en rustig herhaald door fagot, tenorsax en eufonium. Dit thema voert ons mee naar een conventionele baslijn, die twee keer wordt gespeeld metvariërende begeleiding. Daarna volgt een kalmer triogedeelte, dat delicaat is getoonzet en waarin de tenorinstrumenten van het orkest ruimschoots aan bod komen. Het wordt dan overgenomen door het complete orkest en brengt onsterug naar de inleiding en de twee hoofdthema’s, uitmondend in een triomfantelijk slot.

Guardians of the Waves wurde von der Japan Coast Guard Band anlässlich ihres 30-jährigen Bestehens im Jahr 2018 in Auftrag gegeben. Die Uraufführung fand am 8. November 2018 im Rahmen eines Jubiläumskonzertes statt.Guardians of the Waves wurde als traditioneller Marsch komponiert und beginnt mit einer kurzen Einleitung, die zum Hauptthema führt. Dieses wird zunächst von den Blechbläsern gespielt und dann von den Oberstimmen in denHolzbläsern mit Verzierungen wiederholt. Das Thema wird erweitert und geht in ein zweites Thema über, das zunächst vom Tutti gespielt und dann von Fagott, Tenorsaxophon und Euphonium leise wiederholt wird. Anschließend erklingteine traditionelle Melodie in den Bassinstrumenten, die mit unterschiedlicher Begleitung zweimal gespielt wird. Es folgt ein ruhigeres Trio, das zart besetzt ist und die Tenorinstrumente des Blasorchesters hervorhebt. Dies wirdschließlich vom gesamten Blasorchester aufgegriffen und führt zu einer Wiederholung der Einleitung und einer Rückkehr zu den beiden Hauptthemen, die in einen triumphalen Schluss überleiten.

Guardians of the Waves est une commande de l’Harmonie de la Gendarmerie maritime du Japon pour marquer son 30e anniversaire, en 2018. L’orchestre a créé l’œuvre dans le cadre d’un concert d’anniversaire le 8 novembre decette même année. Écrite en forme de marche traditionnelle, Guardians of the Waves s’ouvre avec une courte introduction qui mène au thème principal, interprété d’abord par les cuivres puis repris avec un déchant fleuri parles bois. Le thème est prolongé et se morphe en un second thème, d’abord en tutti, puis répété doucement par les bassons, saxophones ténor et euphoniums. Ce passage mène une mélodie conventionnelle dans les graves, jouée deuxfois avec divers accompagnements. Vient ensuite un trio plus calme, orchestré avec délicatesse et mettant en avant les instruments ténor. Repris par l’orchestre entier, ce passage est suivi d’un rappel de l’introduction avant unretour aux deux thèmes principaux, qui mènent une conclusion triomphale.

March of the Robot Army was commissioned by Linda Anzolin & Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi for Campobanda 2019, with funds made available by JUST ITALIA. Campobanda is an Italian summer music camp for 8- to 18-year-olds (held inCamposilvano in 2019) which has a different theme every year. The theme for 2019 was ‘science fiction’, so composer Philip Sparke chose to write a robot march. After a quirky introduction featuring trumpet calls and chromaticfigures, the main theme appears in a minor mode on clarinet and tenor sax and is then taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a new theme, led by the trumpet and again repeated by the full ensemble. A further change ofkey introduces a legato ‘trio’ melody over a rather robotic accompaniment: instruments are added bit by bit until a climax is reached. Small motifs from the introduction then lead back to a full recapitulation, revisiting thefirst two themes in new guises before finishing the march with a flourish.

Campobanda is een Italiaans zomermuziekkamp vooracht- tot achttienjarigen (dat in 2019 werd gehouden in Camposilvano) met elk jaar een ander thema. Het thema voor 2019 was sciencefiction, dus besloot componist Philip Sparke een robotmars te schrijven. Na een grilligeinleiding met trompetsignalen en chromatische motieven verschijnt het hoofdthema in mineur op klarinet en tenorsax, waarna het door het hele orkest wordt overgenomen. Een verandering van toonsoort kondigt een nieuw thema aan, weeringeleid door de trompet en herhaald door het volledige ensemble. Een verdere toonsoortverandering introduceert een legato ‘triomelodie’ boven een nogal robotachtige begeleiding: er worden stapsgewijs instrumenten toegevoegd totde muziek uitmondt in een hoogtepunt. Korte figuren uit de inleiding nemen ons dan mee naar een volledige herneming, met een terugkeer naar de eerste twee thema’s in een nieuwe gedaante, waarna de mars in stijl wordt afgesloten.

Das italienische Sommermusikcamp Campobanda für 8- bis18-Jährige fand 2019 in Camposilvano statt und hat jedes Jahr ein anderes Motto. 2019 lautete das Thema Science Fiction“, daher entschied sich der Komponist Philip Sparke dazu, einen Robotermarsch zu schreiben. Nach einerskurrilen Einleitung mit Trompetenrufen und chromatischen Figuren erklingt in Klarinetten und Tenorsaxophonen das Hauptthema in Moll, das dann vom gesamten Orchester aufgegriffen werd. Ein Tonartwechsel kündigt ein neues Thema an,das von der Trompete vorgestellt und anschließend vom gesamten Ensemble wiederholt wird. Ein weiterer Tonartwechsel führt zu einem melodischen, legato gespielten Trio-Abschnitt über einer roboterhaften Begleitung. Nach und nachkommen weitere Instrumente hinzu, bis der Höhepunkt erreicht ist. Kleine Motive aus der Einleitung führen dann zu einer Reprise, wobei die ersten beiden Themen in neuer Gestalt wieder aufgegriffen werden, bevor der Marsch zum Endehin noch einmal musikalisch aufblüht.

Destinée aux jeunes de 8 18 ans, Campobanda est une école demusique d’été dont le thème change chaque année. Celui de l’édition 2019 étant « sciencefiction », Philip Sparke décida d’écrire une marche pour robots. Après une introduction insolite rassemblant appels de trompette et figureschromatiques, le premier thème apparaît dans un mode mineur la clarinette et au saxophone ténor avant d’être repris par l’orchestre entier. Un changement de tonalité annonce un nouveau thème, mené par la trompette et repris,encore une fois, par l’orchestre entier. Un autre changement de tonalité introduit une mélodie legato « en trio » sur un accompagnement quelque peu robotique : divers instruments s’y ajoutent progressivement pour aboutir unclimax. Des petits motifs tirés de l’introduction mènent une récapitulation complète qui reprend les deux premiers thèmes sous des formes différentes, avant de conclure la marche avec un bouquet final.

Sparkling Brass was commissioned by Osaka Concert Brass, one of Japan’s top brass bands, and premiered by them on 27th December 2018 during a concert which celebrated their 10th Anniversary. The work opens in lively mood with fanfare-style figures from the lower band which are answered by the cornets. This interplay intensifies until the mood calms suddenly to introduce a chorale which leads to a duet-cadenza for cornet and euphonium. The rhythmic mood of the opening soon returns and leads to the main theme of the work, a modal caccia which features various section of the band. A short bridge passage leads to a change of key and a new cantabile theme which isintroduced by euphoniums and baritone. This is taken up by the full band after another change of key and leads back to the caccia theme. A transformed version of the opening fanfare returns to close the work.

Sparkling Brass werd geschreven in opdracht van Osaka Concert Brass voor een concert ter gelegenheid van het tienjarig bestaan van die band. Het werk opent in een levendige sfeer, met fanfareachtige motieven in het lage koper, beantwoord door de kornetten. Dit samenspel wordt intenser tot de sfeer plotseling rustiger wordt en er een koraal naar voren komt dat leidt naar een duet-cadens voor kornet en eufonium. De ritmische sfeer van het begin keert snel terug en mondt uit in het hoofdthema, een modale caccia met diverse secties uit de band. Een korte bridgepassage brengt een verandering in toonsoort en een nieuw cantabile thema, ge ntroduceerd door de eufoniumsen bariton. Dit wordt overgenomen door de hele band na nog een toonsoortverandering, waarna het caccia-thema terugkeert. Het werk besluit met een getransformeerde versie van de openingsfanfare.

Nach einem weiteren Tonartwechsel wird es von der gesamten Brass Band übernommen und führt wieder zum Caccia-Thema zurück. Zum Schluss des Werkes erklingt noch einmal eine veränderte Version der Eröffnungsfanfare.

Dit werk, dat door de Olympic Band wordt gespeeld als de olympische vlag wordt gehesen, bevat virtuoze fanfares in het koper, afgewisseld met de percussie en de spectaculaire klanken van de houtblazers. Het dramatisch vloeiende hoofdthemawordt van tijd tot tijd onderbroken door motieven uit de openingsfanfare. Festival Prelude ‘Ad Excel’ was commissioned by the AD Concert Band, from Solihull in the UK, to celebrate their 40th Anniversary in 2016. The title, Ad Excel, is a play on words: it is Latin for ‘to excel’ but also celebrates the band’s anniversary as XL is 40 in Roman numerals. The work opens with a bright fanfare with frequent changes of meter. This leads to a playful main subject, played first by woodwinds, followed by full band. A bridge passage leads to a legato second subject, played twice. The bridge passage returns to introduce the both main melodies in new keys and instrumentations before a coda, derived from the opening fanfare, brings the work to a close.

Festival Prelude ‘Ad Excel’ werd geschreven in opdracht van de AD Concert Band uit het Britse Solihull, ter gelegenheid van het veertigjarig bestaan van dit orkest in 2016. De titel, Ad Excel, heeft een dubbele betekenis, die is gebaseerd op de Engelse van het Latijn afgeleide term ‘to excel’ (excelleren, uitblinken) én op het veertigjarig jubileum van de band, aangezien XL in Romeinse cijfers het getal 40 aanduidt. Het werk opent met een opgewekte fanfare waarin frequent van maatsoort wordt gewisseld. Dan volgt een speels hoofdthema, eerst in het hout en dan het volledige orkest. Een bridgegedeelte leidt naar een legato tweede thema, dat twee keer klinkt.Daarop keert de bridge terug om beide hoofdmelodieën in nieuwe toonsoorten en instrumentaties te introduceren, waarna een coda, ontleend aan de openingsfanfare, het werk besluit.

Das Stück Festival Prelude ‘Ad Excel’ wurde 2016 von der AD Concert Band aus Solihull (Vereinigtes Königreich) aus Anlass ihres 40-jährigen Jubiläums in Auftrag gegeben. Der Titel, Ad Excel, ist ein Wortspiel: Es ist das lateinische Wort für to excel“ (engl.: hervorragend sein“), bezieht sich aber auch auf das Jubiläum des Orchesters, da XL die römische Ziffer für 40 ist. Das Werk beginnt mit einer strahlenden Fanfare mit zahlreichen Taktwechseln. Sie führt zu einem verspielten Hauptthema, das zunächst von den Holzbläsern und anschließend vom gesamten Orchester gespielt wird. Eine Überleitung führt zu einem zweiten Thema im Legato. Die Überleitung kehrtschließlich wieder, um die beiden Hauptmelodien in neuen Tonarten und Instrumentierungen vorzustellen, bis das Werk in einer Coda, die von der Eröffnungsfanfare abgeleitet ist, endet.

Il titolo, Ad Excel, è un gioco di parole: è il corrispondente latino di “eccellere” ma celebra allo stesso tempo l’anniversario della band dato che XL equivale a 40 in numeri romani. L’opera si apre con una luminosa fanfara con frequenti cambi di tempo. Questa sfocia in motivo giocoso principale, prima suonato dai legni, subito dopo dall’intera banda. Un passaggio che funge da ponte porta poi a un secondo tema in legato, suonato per due volte. Il passaggio ritorna poi ad introdurre le due melodieprincipali in una nuova tonalit prima della coda, che riprende la fanfara di apertura, portando il brano alla conclusione.

Prague, also named ‘The Golden City’, has been the cultural and administrative capital city of the Czech Republic for thousands of years.
The city is beautifully situated on the river Moldau.
Every year millions of tourists visit Prague. It is one of the most popular cities of Eastern Europe. With it's mysterious little squares, dark alley ways and cobblestone streets, the ‘City of the 100 Towers’ is a unique mixture of architecture, dominated by monumental buildings, numerous churches and the oldest castle of Europe.
The Bohemian capital city remains timeless. Visit the fort and be amazed at the lovely views over the Charles Bridge. Spend your time carefully browsing through the little stalls filled with paintings, photos, jewelery and hand-decorated products, accompanied by the sounds of the street musicians in the background.
Notice the famous 15 th century astronomical clock that indicates the time every hour with a parade of the twelve apostles.
When composing this piece, it was Jan Bosveld’s intention to depict the atmosphere of this metropolitan city with over one million inhabitants, rather than to create a fairly literal musical portrait.
One of the many other names of Prague is ‘The City of the Clocks’. This can be heard throughout the piece depicted by the tubular bells.
The piece consists of three movements (slow-fast-slow) and was written in a rhapsodic format.

Jan Bosveld was commissioned to write ‘The Golden City’ by the Dutch Music Lend and Information Centre (MUI), a department of the library for the province of Gelderland in Arnhem, the Netherlands.

Praag is één van de oudste metropolen van Europa. De bijnaam “de Gouden Stad” heeft het te danken aan de goudkleurige koepels op de honderden torens die de stad rijk is.
Vanaf de hooggelegen, majestueuze burcht “Hradcany” heeftmen een prachtig uitzicht op het oude stadsgedeelte. Men ziet de brede, traag stromende Moldau met de vele bruggen waaronder de Karelsbrug met zijn gotische bogen. In het centrum is het een wirwar van kleine straatjes. De tram ishier het ideale vervoermiddel waarbij men steeds schijnt uit te komen op het grote Wenceslasplein.
Hier is de invloed van het westen en de val van het ijzeren gordijn overduidelijk aanwezig in de vorm van schreeuwende lichtreclamesen trendy winkels.
Ondanks deze invloeden en het massatoerisme heeft Praag haar authentieke sfeer voor het grootste deel weten te behouden.
Een van de vele andere namen van Praag is 'De Stad van de Klokken'. Dit kanworden gehoord in heel het stuk, uitgebeeld door de buisklokken.
Het stuk bestaat uit drie bewegingen (langzaam-snel-langzaam) en werd geschreven in een rhapsodisch formaat.

In deze compositie geeft de componistde indrukken van een tweetal bezoeken aan Praag weer.
Het is meer een sfeerbeeld van de stad en zijn bewoners dan een beschrijving van de belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden.

The title Whistle for a Penny can have different meanings, but brings especially to mind the difficult relationship between art and money… After a short introduction, the main theme is heard. This theme is an excellent tune to whistle, by the way. After lots of variation in the instrumentation, as well as contrasting melodies and themes, the finale sees a return to the opening bars of the composition.

Kunst en geld? Helaas gaat dat niet altijd even goed samen...En dat is waar deze titel naar verwijst. Maar ook naar het feit dat uw publiek met dit werk uitstekend kan meefluiten! Na een korte inleiding horen we het hoofdthema; hétmoment om mee te doen! Na veel afwisseling in de instrumentatie, contrasterende melodieën en thema’s keren we terug naar de inleidende maten.

Der Titel Whistle for a Penny (‘Pfeife für einen Pfennig’) kann auf verschiedene Weise gedeutet werden, ist aber auch sicherlich ein Verweis auf das problematische Verhältnis zwischen Kunst und Geld...Nach einer kurzen Einleitung erklingt in diesem Konzertmarsch das Hauptthema, das man ausgezeichnet mitpfeifen kann. Nach viel Abwechslung in der Instrumentation sowie kontrastierenden Melodien und Themen kehrt der Schluss zu den einleitenden Takten zurück.Eine runde Sache!

Une courte introduction précède l’entrée du thème principal. Celui-ci est un air que l’on peut siffler facilement (whistle signifiant siffler“ ou sifflement“ en anglais, tandis que pennywhistle est un fl teau).La mélodie suivante est exécutée par le registre grave de l’orchestre, puis le thème principal revient dans diverses instrumentations. Dans le trio, nous entendons un thème lyrique qui précède un tutti. La marche s’achève avec une coda qui rappelle allègrement les premières mesures de la pièce.

Una breve introduzione precede il tema principale, un’aria che si può fischiare facilmente (whistle significa appunto fischiare, mentre il pennywhistle è una specie di flauto). La melodia che segue è affidata al registro grave dell’orchestra che anticipa la riesposizione del tema iniziale in diverse strumentazioni. Nel trio, sentiamo un tema lirico che precede un tutti. La marcia termina con una coda che riprende allegramente le prime misure del brano.
