Right at the beginning of the overture, Telemann comes up with a surprising idea. After the -'bare' entry of the wind section, the string tutti do not join in the playing until the third bar. The 'harlequinade' often appearing in Telemann's overture suites obtains its attraction not least from syncopes and from a permanent change of tone colour. The 'Espagniol' whose title prom-ises a bit of urbanity turns out to be a saraband, the 'Bourree en Trompette' justifies its name by the tone repetitions typical of trumpet music.In the context of the whole, the 'Sommeille', a harmonically unusual movement in C minor, is almost a piece across the border. Even in this gently rocking piece, Telemann is not at a loss for unobtrusive wit when he lets the upper parts die down shortly before the end, only a single bass tone represents the last chord.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's (1756-1791) Flute Concerto in G was written by the composer in 1778. The concerto remains widely studied and performed on the flute, making it one of the most important concerti in the instrument's repertoire. Paul Taffanel and Philippe Gaubert's composed cadenzas for the work are essential to all performers of the concerto. Concerto in G is in three movements; 1. Allegro maestoso, 2. Adagio ma non troppo, and 3. Rondo: Tempo di Menuetto. The first and last movements are in the tonic key, whilst the second movement is in the subdominant key of D major. All three movements contain a cadenza which initially would have been left for the performer to improvise. However, cadenzas have since been written, including those of Taffanel and Gaubert. Both were prominent flautists of their time and their understanding of the flute concerto repertoire is second to none, making their cadenzas well-informed and essential to performers of the concerto.

Georg Philipp Telemann gave more consideration to amateur musicians than any of the other great composers of this day. One of the many works he wrote specifically for amateurs is the collection presented here 'A Second Set of Seven times Seven plus One Minuet' by Melante (i.e. Telemann). These are extremely attractive, technically not too demanding pieces for domestic music making. They are also ideal for teaching with their short, clearly structured movements which introduce a comparatively wide range of key signatures (including E flat major, F minor, A major and B minor). The pieces are ideally suited to introduce young players to the musical language of the High Baroque and the technical demands (arppegiated triads, wide leaps, trills) typical for this period. The bass line may be reinforced by a cello or gamba, bassoon or bass recorder (the basso part is only available separately).

The arrangement calls for ?free articulation in a ?jazz legato? spirit?, making the use of circular breathing optional in order to favour the piece?s incredible energy. The score comes with a CD that includes a complete version of the work performed on Saxophone by Philippe Geiss, as well as an electroacoustic accompaniment isolated for playback. This eclectic musical adventure proves itself both stimulating for the mind and invigorating for the senses..
