Cats’ Night Out follows the adventures of a cat as it makes its big escape to explore the magical mysteries that await our feline friend in the darkness of the great outdoors. The opening line foreshadows the upcoming movements of our cat as it experiences a night outside. The first movement, On the Prowl, musically represents the cat as it roams around the neighborhood looking for adventure. The second movement Mouse Hunt, melodiously depicts a cat as it hunts down its favorite prey the mouse. The surprise ending represents the mouse making his great escape. This is a truly enjoyable selection for students and audiences alike. This programmatic work is an excellent choice for your next concert.

The Corona pandemic has affected orchestra organizations around the globe since January 2020. Most of the ensembles were forced to stop operations during hard lockdown periods of public life. Freelance ensembles and privately funded orchestras faced even higher pressure than state funded ones. The pandemic has shown, how fragile orchestras may be. On the other hand the pandemic has brought forth a boost of creative alternatives from single musicians, from greater ensembles and from orchestra managements to upkeep operations under new physically distanced conditions and on the internet. Highest flexibility was shown in artistic planning, in creating new programs, in digital and recording work, in outreach and education activities, in new concert formats or support of pandemic-related charity campaigns. The pandemic has shown, how agile orchestras might be. The very questions are: What are the lessons learned from the pandemic challenges? What are new structural approaches for musicians and managements to rethink orchestral organizations for the post-pandemic future? How can the engagement of musicians and staff for the own organization be enhanced? How can the ties towards the members of already familiar audience groups be strengthened? Every co-author of this book is a specialist in his or her field. Together were looking out to all aspects from which we think thatorchestral organizations should take a breeze of fresh air and rethink their operations in the new normal after the pandemic. There is no step back, there only are steps forward.

The third volume in the Songs and Choral Works Series of the Reger Complete Works (RWA) contains the songs Max Reger composed (almost entirely in Munich) between 1901 and February 1903. With these compositions, Reger not only entered into direct competition with the so-called “Munich School†around Ludwig Thuille, Max von Schillings, and Richard Strauss, but also attempted to establish himself more widely as an uncompromising renewer of the genre. The songs contrast with the Romantic song aesthetic through their forward-looking declamatory style and they display a treatment of the piano which goes far beyond conventional song accompaniment. In January 2008 the Max-Reger-Institut (MRI) in Karlsruhe began publishing a scholarly-critical edition of the works of Reger (RWA). This is supported by the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature, and as a Hybrid Edition is exploring new approaches in editorial techniques.

This collection of more than 170 songs and chants without words, including six previously unavailable in North America composed by Edwin E. Gordon, is for anyone looking for more songs organized by tonality and meter to use in their Music Learning Theory-based classes. Like the first volume, these songs and chants are an excellent resource for bringing young children through the various stages of preparatory audiation, from acculturation to imitation and assimilation. The melodies in this collection are organized by tonality: major, minor, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian, multitonal/multimodal, chants are organized by meter: duple meter, triple meter, unusual paired meter, unusual unpaired meter, and multi-metric. As with the first volume, these songs and chants present a rich and varied musical syntax, and they are also a great way to hold a child’s attention. Intentionally without lyrics (so children concentrate on the music and are not distracted by the words), these songs should be sung by an adult using a conversational and relational approach rather than as a formal musical performance. If left free to move around the classroom and to enact movements while listening to these songs, young children will spontaneously babble and vocalize—the earliest forms of autonomous “creation†in response to the music. Enjoy! Andrea Apostoli is an author, musician, and educator living in Italy. He is president of the Italian Gordon Association for Music Learning (aigam.org). Elena Papini is trainer and supervisor for the Italian Gordon Association for Music Learning (aigam.org). She is also a Music Moves for Piano instructor and Director of the Amadeus School. .
