Both of the Kyrie settings in E flat major K. 322 (1778/79) and C major K. 323 (probably not prior to 1790) belong to those works by Mozart which were only handed down as incomplete draft scores. However, in both cases Mozart's original drafts were so extensive and well advanced that Abbe Maximilian Stadler, Mozart's friend and known from the history associated with the Requiem, could complete both settings. In 1830, for the first edition of the Kyrie K. 323 Stadler employed the text of the Marian Antiphon for Easter Regina coeli laetare for the vocal parts. The Carus edition presents both the original text (Kyrie), as well as the text from the first edition (Regina coeli), so that the work may be performed in the Mass or in the context of a solemn Vespers during the time of Easter. With a duration of about 10 minutes, Schubert's Magnificat D 486 in C major is one of the more concise settings of the well-known Marian canticles, originally for the service of Vespers. It was composed in late summer 1815, and is therefore probably one of a series of church music works Schubert wrote in his youth for Lichtenthal Parish Church. The work requires a large-scale orchestra with strings, woodwind, and brass. The four-part choir contrasts with four soloists; this quartet sings the peaceful middle section of the three-section work. For the Carus edition Schubert's own autograph manuscript of his Magnificat was consulted again for the first time since 1888. Until 1989 this had been thought to be lost. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score and part available separately - see item CA.7005300.

For SATB (with divisions) unaccompanied This partner antiphon to Bednall's Alma Redemptoris Mater is fast and joyful. This pair of antiphons compliments Howells's setting of the other Marian antiphons (Salve Regina and Regina Caeli). The central section employs a soprano solo, and the divisi in the vocal parts creates a rich texture.

The Urtext edition of what is arguably the most often played double-bass work of all was long overdue. The work was previously available only in an abridged and arranged form. The edition departs from the sole extant source, a set of parts from the estate of the composer and double-bass virtuoso Johannes Sperger. The score and orchestral parts as well as the piano reduction are printed in E major as well as D major so as to make the work playable both in orchestral or Viennese tuning as well as in solo tuning. The piano reduction contains additional cadenzas by the editor.I hope players will convert to this edition.(Clifford Bartlett, in: Early Music Review, No. 142, June 2011)An exciting addition to the bassist's library. This definitive score will assist teachers and performers alike.(Marian Heckenburg, AUSTA Stringendo).

Haydn composed his four-movement Salve Regina at Eisenstadt in 1770/71. It is distinguished by its use of the organ as a solo instrument. Here Haydn proves himself a master of the musical setting of the Marian text. Originally written for four solo singers, it may also be performed chorally. Score available separately - see item CA.5199800.

The unbroken popularity of Vanhal's sole double bass concerto in competitions and for practice and concert purposes is reason enough for us to publish the work in Breitkopf Urtext. The edition profits from Tobias Glockler's experience of many years. As with the other great double-bass concertos of the classical Viennese repertoire (Dittersdorf, Hoffmeister), Glockler arrives at convincing solutions. He began by filtering out a solid musical text from the source (which was not always free of contradictions) that was supplied with many additions. The disposition of the solo part required detailed knowledge of performance practice, since the work was written in the historical Viennese double bass tuning, and a few passages cannot be played without difficulty on a modern instrument. As with Dittersdorf and Hoffmeister, the piano reduction makes it possible to use three different double-bass tunings (solo, orchestral and Viennese). Moreover, it contains the editor's virtuoso cadenzas as well.I have performed the Vanhal in Viennese tuning and it was my thesis topic so I am thrilled to see an edition that makes this tuning so accessible. I highly recommend this all-encompassing edition. (Marian Heckenburg, Stringendo).

This is a modern performing edition of the Mass to the Blessed Virgin by Josquin. In the 16th century, this was the best known mass by the most celebrated composer of the day. It is a troped mass, with textual additions to the Gloria making it appropriate for a Marian service. It is also varied in style and demonstrates a mastery which is exemplary of Josquin's late works. Published in the Fazer Editions of Early Music series - a choral series under the editorial supervision of Paul Hillier, founder and artistic director of the renowned Hilliard Ensemble. Although each title in this series is the result of careful scholarly research and is a reliable source for musicologists, the series' main purpose is to make practical performing editions available to choirs and other vocal ensembles. The original C clefs have been replaced by G and F clefs and the note values adapted to conform to modern practice. All the works in the series are intended for mixed voices. Each title includes a lengthy introduction in English and notes on the editorial principles. Where necessary, an English translation of the text and a guide to pronunciation are provided.
