It is only natural that Universal Edition turns to their excellent pedagogical composer James Rae to kick off their new Concert Band Collection, a new series of works perfect for school bands. I have composed with the aim of providing directors of elementary level bands with original material that will both inspire and challenge their musicians. Something quite a bit different from the usual Christmas program fare, Bartok's collection of Romanian Christmas Carols springs from his lifelong fascination with folk music of the region. Bartok arranged several of these folk songs for the Christmas season into his original piano solos (UE005890), and van Zoelen has faithfully transcribed this into saxophone quartet. A collection of solo songs by Einari Marvia (1915-97) edited by Matti Tuloisela. As many as 11 songs are here published for the first time. Einari Marvia contributed about a hundred solo songs to the Finnish Lied tradition established by Yrjo Kilpinen but drew his musical influences more from his teacher, Erkki Melartin, than from Kilpinen. Marvia turned for inspiration to ancient Finnish folk poetry and the nature lyrics of Finnish poets. His songs are characterised by rich musical, melodic invention enhanced by colourful, distinctive harmonies. The texts are taken from a number of sources, which proves that he read widely and was familiar with poetry.
