Double bass solo SKU: BR.EB-9268 Revised Version 2010. Composed by...(+)
Double bass solo SKU: BR.EB-9268 Revised Version 2010. Composed by Helmut Lachenmann. Arranged by Caleb Salgado. Solo instruments; Folder. Edition Breitkopf. Music post-1945; New music (post-2000). Score. Composed 1969/2010. 26 pages. Duration 9'. Breitkopf and Haertel #EB 9268. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.EB-9268). ISBN 9790004185681. 12 x 9 inches. This piece originated as an introduction to instrumental musique-concrete. In this sort of piece it is common for sound phenomena to be so refined and organised that they are not so much the results of musical experiences as of their own acoustic attributes. Timbres, dynamics and so on arise not of their own volition but as components of a concrete situation characterised by texture, consistency, energy, resistance. This does not come from within but from a liberated compositional technique. At the same time it implies that our customary sharply-honed auditory habit is thwarted. Chamber Music Flute(s) SKU: PR.144407290 Composed by Ali Ryerson. Performance Score. 4 pages. Duration 4 minutes. Theodore Presser Company #144-40729. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.144407290). ISBN 9781491135150. UPC: 680160687008. Jazz luminary Ali Ryerson traces a unique and personal artistic path in this solo work. With an engaging form reminiscent of jazz charts (a dreamy introduction, a catchy, swinging head, and improvisatory-feeling 12-bar choruses), Ryerson’s music pays deeply-felt homage to Charlie Parker and other jazz greats, while maintaining an organic connection to the lineage of unaccompanied woodwind music in the classical tradition. Classical players will gain insight into jazz harmony, rhythm, and expression as they learn this knockout recital piece, while Ryerson fans in the jazz world gain an image of her musical mind in this fully-notated composition. Jazz Dream, a jazz-inspired solo flute piece, was commissioned by Claudia Anderson for her Glass Ceilings project. Claudia once told me that playing jazz flute has been one of her musical ambitions. I daresay her performance of JD could very well break a glass ceiling of her own!Moved by the events of 2020, composing Jazz Dream became my way of honoring my musical heroes from the Black community, namely the jazz musicians who created this music and truly broke glass ceilings. As jazz shares its origins with the blues, both genres having originated in the African-American community, I decided on a 12-bar blues form as the framework for the piece. The opening theme gently draws us into a dream-like state, with a melody in slow motion and lines that linger. When the REM cycle kicks into gear, there’s an abrupt rhythmic shift that leads straight into a swingin’ blues. Idiomatic jazz rhythms abound, with blue notes galore – the tension notes that virtually define the sound of both the blues and jazz (i.e. the flatted third, fifth, and seventh notes of a scale in place of the expected major intervals). After several groovin’ choruses of a 12-bar blues in B(, often played as if the soloist is improvising, the blues modulates to the key of E(, and as a tribute to the great Charlie Parker (AKA Bird), I harmonically suggest the more complex set of bebop changes that Parker introduced in his composition, Blues for Alice. Often referred to as Bird Changes or Bird Blues, instead of the basic I - IV – V chord progression commonly used in the blues, Parker used a series of sequential ii-V progressions (and secondary ii-V progressions). With the addition of some tritone substitutions, a chromatically descending bass line deftly replaces the original I-IV-V root movement. This is the harmonic background I was hearing as I wrote this particular chorus. After my 12-bar nod to Bird’s changes, the introductory dream theme returns, now in tempo and with a straight-ahead swing feel. Variations on this theme follow, again to be played as if improvising, with the soloist once again bringing their own personality into the performance. This section builds to a climax, the music pauses, then modulates to C, with a return to the original blues theme. The energy and groove increase through the final flourish, where a blues line ends on the idiomatic flatted fifth. $9.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock

Chamber Music Piano SKU: PR.110418140 Composed by James Matheson. Performance Score. 24 pages. Duration 25 minutes. Theodore Presser Company #110-41814. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.110418140). ISBN 9781491129432. UPC: 680160640379. Matheson’s five-movement work is a setting of stained glass windows created by Marc Chagall and Henri Matisse for a rustic country church adjoining the Rockefeller estate near Sleepy Hollow on the Hudson River. Matheson’s suite draws from four Chagall windows: 1. Jeremiah, 2. Isaiah, 3. Crucifixion, 4. The Good Samaritan, and culminates with Matisse’s 5. The Rose. In 1954, the Rockefeller family asked Henri Matisse to create a stained glass Rose Window for the Union Church of Pocantico Hills, New York as a memorial to Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, the great art patroness and a founder of the Museum of Modern Art. It was to be the artist’s last work. A few years later, Mrs. Rockefeller’s youngest son, David, acting on behalf of the family, commissioned Marc Chagall to create an entire series of stained glass windows to fill the rest of the small church resulting in the large, majestic “Good Samaritan†window and eight sublime smaller windows, each depicting a biblical figure or scene. In 2015, Premiere Commission commissioned James Matheson to compose WINDOWS to celebrate the centennial of the Union Church of Pocantico Hills and the 100th birthday of David Rockefeller. This deeply touching, epic cycle distills into music the intimate, often heart-rending, visions of Chagall as well as the powerful simplicity of Matisse’s modern design which utilizes the striking collage forms he employed in his final years. Matheson’s work also reflects the influence of Olivier Messiaen’s own theologically-inspired music. Like the French master, Matheson utilizes large-scale blocks of harmonies with organ-like sonorities to support and shift the music’s kaleidoscopic planes of color and set into relief the work’s piercing motifs and intricate patterns. The universal themes of love and sacrifice (“Jeremiah†and “Isaiahâ€), loss and altruism (“Crucifixion†and “The Good Samaritanâ€) and the jubilant celebration of life and nature (“The Roseâ€) are memorably portrayed in this poignant tribute to the human spirit.—Bruce Levingston. $20.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock

Hand percussion and bodhran - Beginning; Intermediate; Advanced SKU: MB.22062...(+)
Hand percussion and bodhran - Beginning; Intermediate; Advanced SKU: MB.22062M Composed by Michel Merhej Baklouk. Squareback saddle stitch, Percussion: Hand Percussion and Bodhran, Method. World Music. Book and online audio. 128 pages. Mel Bay Publications, Inc #22062M. Published by Mel Bay Publications, Inc (MB.22062M). ISBN 9781513460536. 8.75 x 11.75 inches. Built around the life and teachings of master percussionist, Michel Merhej Baklouk, this book has been designed as a biographical tribute, a teaching manual, and a resource guide for anyone wishing to develop a deeper understanding of the role that percussion plays in Near Eastern Arabic music. This book differs from most technique manuals in that it includes historical information about Arabic music as it pertains to the life and work of a single artist, Michel Merhej Baklouk. The book is composed of three parts: Introduction, Lessons, and Reference Information. Each part is written to stand on its own as well as fit with the whole so that readers can approach the book either as individual articles and lessons, or in its entirety, to be read from cover to cover. By presenting Michel's work in this way, we hope to appeal to a wider audience, percussion students at varying skill levels and from varying music disciplines and backgrounds, students of music and Middle Eastern studies, or anyone else interested in twentieth century Arab music and culture. The first part, Introduction, contains several essays about Michel's life, his teaching philosophy, pedagogical practices, musical aesthetics and performance practices. Although these sections may be read independently, they are also designed to help percussion students apply the book's lessons to their own playing and musical interpretations. The technical focus of this book is on the riqq; however, students of Arabic music (beginning through advanced) can adapt the practical exercises to gain mastery of the percussion instrument(s) of their choice. The second part, Lessons, begins with information about how to hold the percussion instrument (case in point: the riqq) and how to practice effectively. It then presents the body of exercises that Michel developed for his students. These exercises have been taken directly from Michel's notated lessons, which he developed into units corresponding to levels of proficiency, or academic years as he taught them at the Conservatory in Beirut; however, for the purposes of this book, the exercises are reorganized to correspond to subject matter and only roughly mirror Michel's conservatory sequence. Unit 1, Technique Building Exercises, is aimed at novice players or anyone who is new to reading music. Units 2 through 5 focus on specific rhythmic structures with increasing complexity. Students should master each unit of exercises before proceeding to the next unit. The third part, Reference Information, includes a notation reference, a list of rhythms, a list of further reading recommendations, and a glossary of Arabic music terms, many of which are used in the text. All Arabic words in this book appear in italics, except proper names, and with the exception of some proper Arab names, the text is essentially written in the standard system of transliteration used by the Library of Congress and most academic literature Throughout the book you will see quotations from Michel offset in the text. These prosaic tidbits may be words of wisdom, interesting anecdotes about Michel's life, or insights into his work and world of music. Each provides a glimpse into the personality of this exceptional musician. As a technical manual for students of Arabic percussion, Classical Riqq Technique provides specific exercises and explores important concepts, some of which are rarely taught, even in private lessons. At the same time, this book strives for a broader goal, to present and preserve classical percussion from the perspective of a master who not only lived in but also influenced the golden age of Arabic music. Piano SKU: PR.510076960 Pour Piano. Composed by Stephane Delplace. Full score. With Standard notation. 28 pages. Duration 25 minutes, 37 seconds. Gerard Billaudot Editeur #510-07696. Published by Gerard Billaudot Editeur (PR.510076960). 1. Choral: An improbably superimposing of Beethoven and Brahms. At the end of the first performance of the latter's 1st Symphony, someone asked the composer: Don't you find that your main theme remin ds one of the Ode to Joy? To which he retorted: Even an idiot would have noticed it! 2. Fugue: in the last exposition, the subject of Fugue I from volume 1 of Bach's Well-Tempered Keyboard is super imposed on the theme from Mozart's so-called easy sonata. 3. Passion: In his Violin Concerto, Mendelssohn, to whom we owe the rediscovery of Bach's Passions, seems to have borrowed a theme from a lost Passion. 4. Recitativo: Tribute to Franck's tribute to Bach in his Sonata for violin and piano. 5. Invention: A private revenge, after a bitter failure. Debussy's Toccata was on the compulsory list for the Conservatory piano class entrance exam. 6. Arpeggione: In which the listener realizes the similarity in the introduction to Schubert's Unfinished Symphony and Arpeggione Sonata. 7. Sarabande: The most iconoclastic, for Bach's 5th Cello Suite is already suffused with harmony. There might be an evocatioin of a Brahms-like overarching structure, though... 8. Variation: The slowest variation ever written on Paganini's 24th Caprice. 9. Scene: Schumann's Reverie as a Prelude. 10. Finale: In order to capture the elusive harmony of the Finale of Chopin's Sonate Funebre. 11. Fugue on Au clair de la lune: Our greatest nursery rhymes, fugue fitted and choralized. 12. Fugue de Noel (Christmas fugue): Quite appropriate. 13. Fugue on J'ai du bon tabac: Prohibited counterpoint. 14. Fugue on La Marseillaise: Franco-German reconciliation. 15. Pedal - Exercitium: Realization and conclusion of Bach's organ pedal exercies. $29.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks

SATB choir with some divisi, organ - Medium SKU: PL.0122 Composed by Peter Pindar Stearns. Parish. Choral, General. Octavo. Paraclete Press #0122. Published by Paraclete Press (PL.0122). This imaginative setting of words by John White Chadwick creates a feeling of eternal strength from its constant musical flow. Peter Pindar Stearns is well known for his sensitivity to text and choir alike and this anthem reflects his keen imagination as well. The first verse is set in unison with a lovely soaring melody while the second verse supports the melody in four-part writing. A brief organ interlude ensues before the final verse which is for two part women and men's voices concluding in a spirit of unity. Peter Pindar Stearns has surpassed even my highest expectations for him with his Eternal Ruler, a tribute to Edwardian and post-Edwardian hymn anthems. Where to begin? Imagine the finest, broadest melody Gustav Holst could write, add the impassioned fervor of Balfour Gardiner's Evening Hymn or Stanford in B-flat, and hold all that together with Stearns's ultimate integrity and infallible taste. Every time I play and sing through this, it leaves me in tears, and I haven't even mentioned the amazing subtlety of Stearns's harmony, the genius of his part writing, and the overwhleming sweep of his lines. This is gorgeous, glorious music. - Dr. John Hooker AAM Journal November 2001. $2.10 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Joseph Haydn's so-called Paris Symphonies were composed in 1785 and 1786 for the masonic lodge “Société Olympique†in Paris, which ran a large orchestra and organised regular concerts. These six works are notable for their artful motivic work and playful wit. Haydn here pays tribute both to the discerning taste of the Paris audience and to the excellent abilities of the musicians in the orchestra. These symphonies rapidly became famous and popular throughout Europe, thanks to editions published variously in Paris, Vienna and London. In this D-major symphony, composed in 1786, the slow movement entitled “Capriccio†is very free in its form, and its introverted mood stands in marked contrast to the exuberance of the other movements. This study edition reproduces the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, which is a guarantor of the finest scholarship. Theodore Presser Company #114-40726. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.114407260). UPC: 680160011209. Ports of Call, a suite of five movements for two violins and guitar was written for the Trio Triento for their New York debut. Composed in the Summer of 1992, it was premiered in April 1993. 1992 was the 500th anniversary of the 1492 expulsion of the Jews from Spain and, of course, Columbus' trip to America. To commemorate these important events, I was commissioned by organizations in 20 major cities to write an oratorio. The result was Ever Since Babylon. The musical material was greatly influenced by tunes from around the Mediterranean region. These Sephardic melodies took on treat meaning for me, and I took five of them and expanded them into these five pieces which are actually dances. I felt that the combination of two violins and guitar lent itself well as a vehicle for this music. The names of the cities are used because the tunes originated in these particular locations. Marseille, a typical provencale dance with naturally changing meters and a light, airy, touch. Alexandria, much more mysterious and languid, reflecting the heat and inertia of that glorious city in slow though sometimes steady movement. Salonika, a wild dance in typical Greek fashion celebrating a holiday with abandon. The whirling movement goes relentlessly from beginning to end. Haifa is represented by two beautiful chant-like pastoral tunes which introduce the beauty and luminous quality of this, one of the most beautiful parts in the Eastern Mediterranean. Valencia, the last, a tribute to medieval Spain. The music is a culmination of the influences of the three great cultures, Moslem, Christian, and Jewish, which flourished there for hundreds of years. It is an uplifting dance with just a tinge of sadness in the center, since the Golden Age of which the tune was a part, had come to a tragic end in 1492. --Samuel Adler. $55.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Sheet music. Edition Schott. Classical. Hardcover. Op. 32. 206 pages. Schott Music #WGA1054-20. Published by Schott Music (HL.49042455). ISBN 9783795794828. 10.0x13.25x0.845 inches. German - English. Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on 'Der Freischutz'. The unprecedented success of this opera overshadowed all his other works and contributed to their increasing fall into oblivion. Certain works such as 'Preciosa', 'Oberon', and 'Euryanthe', the overtures, solo concertos and piano sonatas, the lieder and chamber works enjoyed great popularity and were widely known in Germany and abroad as late as the second half of the 19th century. However, any chance of a revival of Weber's influential and substantial oeuvre was wasted in the 1920s, when a complete edition - begun by Hans Joachim Moser and with potential contributors including Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein and Richard Strauss - failed after the third volume.Ever since there have been numerous attempts to restart a complete edition of Weber's works, but as this kind of project would have required the co-operation of scholars from both sides of the inter-German border, the political situation after 1945 was not conducive to any such enterprise. Careful negotiations led to the first tangible steps in the 1980s. The intention, right from the beginning, was to place Weber's work in context, and not to separate his musical output from his influential work as a writer, critic and organiser in the musical field, but to publish his compositions together with his letters, diaries and other literary output as the best way to document the cross-fertilisation between his musical, literary and practical activities.Since the German re-unification both working-parties concerned - at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, and at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, Detmold/Paderborn - have co-operated on the complete edition of the musical works (c. 45 volumes in 10 series: sacred music; cantatas, odes and other occasional works; stage works; lieder and vocal works; orchestral works; chamber music; music for piano; piano reductions; miscellanea, arrangements and orchestrations; works of doubtful attribution). The diaries (6-8 vols.) are edited in Berlin and the letters (8-10 vols.) and other writings (2 vols.) in Detmold. This complete edition aims to be a reliable basis of scholarly debate as well as for the authentic performance practice of Carl Maria von Weber's music. Conforming to the standards of recent historico-critical editions, the textual material will be based on all available authentic sources, accompanied by a detailed documentation of the genesis and a list of variants for each work. The musicological importance of the works will be evaluated by placing them in their historical context, the presentation of their genesis, history and Critical Commentaries. The letters, writings and diaries will be treated as inter-related and relevant to each other in the commentaries, therefore readers should benefit from a wealth of concise information and cross-references. $201.00 - See more - Buy online

SKU: BA.BVK02137 Five Centuries of Sacred Muisc in San Pietro. Composed by Giancarlo Rostirolla. Hardback. Volume I + II. Book. Baerenreiter Verlag #BVK02137_00. Published by Baerenreiter Verlag (BA.BVK02137). ISBN 9783761821374. 24.5 x 17.5 cm inches. Text Language: Italian. One of the major institutions of sacred music, the Cappella Giulia at St. Peter's Basilica, can look back on a five-hundred-year history. Now Giancarlo Rostirolla brings this turbulent and spellbinding history to life using original documents from the Papal Library and the chapter archives of Saint Peter in the Vatican.
The Cappella Giulia was founded by Pope Julius II in 1513. Its chapel masters were the most important representatives of Roman vocal polyphony, above all Giovanni Animuccia and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Francesco Soriano, Virgilio Mazzocchi, Orazio Benevoli, Paolo Lorenzani and Pietro Bencini. Also employed there were such opera composers as Domenico Scarlatti, Niccolò Jommelli and Nicola Zingarelli, the proponents of Italian Cecilianism up to Armando Renzi, and such renowned organists as Girolamo Frescobaldi.
In this documentary history, as comprehensive as it is exciting to read, Giancarlo Rostirolla pays tribute to the Cappella Giulia as a musical institution of extraordinary historical importance and the vehicle for half a millennium of sacred music. For decades the author, an internationally acclaimed authority on Rome's musical traditions, has immersed himself like few others in the church and chapel archives, libraries and music collections of the Eternal City.
– For the first time these two volumes explore the history of the Cappella Giulia with information on all the musicians known to have worked there, together with their biographies, lists of compositions and documents on the chapel's history.

It is a matter of debate whether or not this Symphony no. 85, “La Reine†(“The Queenâ€), was really given its nickname because it was the favorite symphony of Marie-Antoinette. The name certainly did not stem from Haydn, but it was nevertheless stated on the title page of the edition published by Imbault in Paris as early as 1788. This study edition reproduces the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, which is a guarantor of the finest scholarship. An informative preface and a brief critical report make this handy score an ideal companion for all Haydn fans, both present and future. $16.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock
