According to the date inscribed in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's autograph score, the present mass was composed in March 1780. The instrumental setting (oboes, trumpets and timpani add color and festive splendor to the work) rightly suggests that the work was in all likelihood performed with the Church Sonata K. 336 at the Easter high mass in the Salzburg cathedral. Since Archbishop Hieronymus Count Colloredo wanted the mass text to be treated as succinctly as possible, Mozart offered him a richly orchestrated Missa solemnis in the terse form of a Missa brevis. The brilliant, festive character of the Mass K. 337 is abruptly interrupted by a powerful Benedictus in a harsh A minor, the most striking and revolutionary movement in all of Mozart's Masses, in the strictest contrapuntal style ... (Alfred Einstein). What could have inspired Mozart to such unexpected rigor? But there is another surprise yet: while the dark drama of the Holy Week seems to radiate from this Benedictus, the following Agnus Dei in the distant key of E flat major sounds, with its soprano solo and concertante oboe, bassoon and organ, like a song of thanksgiving filled with the warmth and light of Easter.Other features worth noting are the three unisons between the alto and bass heard at the Deus pater omnipotens in the Gloria (bars 22-32), the a cappella illumination of the words Jesu Christe found a little later (bar 62) and the descending chromaticism evocative of death at the Crucifixus in the Credo. (Incidentally, Mozart had initially planned a different movement for the Credo of this mass, superscribed Tempo di Chiaconna; he wrote out 136 bars but, for some unknown reason, never completed it.)While the Coronation Mass K. 317 of 1779 is one of Mozart's most well-known mass settings, its later composed frllow piece K. 337 - Mozart's last completed mass before the great C minor fragment K. 427 (417a) - has been paid less attention, even though it is an outstanding example of the Mozartian mass type and contains parallels to the Coronation Mass in its disposition and in the structure of its various movements. The score and piano reduction of this new edition were prepared on the basis of the autograph (Osterreichische Nationalbibliothek/Vienna, dass. no. Mus. Hs. 18 97512) and the Salzburg performance material (Staats- und Stadtbibliothek/Augsburg, dass. no. Hl. Kreuz 9). We wish to thank both libraries for putting the source material at our disposal.Franz Beyer, Munich, Spring 1998.

Superstar Bruno Mars wrote this friendship song for his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans. This attractive arrangement is accompanied by piano with optional ukulele or guitar. Plus, the SATB can even be sung a cappella. Sopranos take the melody, while the other parts provide supportive harmonic grooves and stylized backing vocals. Familiar, flexible, and fun!

Beethoven did not work continuously on this symphony and interrupted his work a couple of times. As the sketches show, he presumably wrote down first ideas in the autumn of 1800.No other autograph material has survived. As Ferdinand Ries, a pupil of Beethoven, bitterly reports, Beethoven gave him the autograph, but it was unfortunately stolen by a friend, out of pure friendship. In April 1803, the composition was premiered publicly, together with the first symphony and the third piano concerto with Beethoven himself as soloist. Although Beethoven's first two symphonies are still influenced by Haydn and Mozart, novelties can already be discovered. The second symphony starts breaking away from traditional forms and lets us surmise the monumentality of Beethoven's innovation. The editor, Armin Raab, critically illuminates the transmission of the work and its sources. He also clears up a wide spread belief in older literature, that this cheerful work might have been composed parallel to the Heiligenstadter Testament. The practical performance material by Breitkopf & Hartel is based on the music text of the New Beethoven Complete Edition and constitutes the authoritative reading of Beethoven research.

These canons, published for the first time, document Hindemith's penchant for composing small parodic works with a wink on given occasions. Over 30 artful pieces in the picture postcard format wrote the composer. He packed Christmas greetings, congratulationson anniversaries and thanks to friends, colleagues and cultural institutions in a counterpoint. After the first band for chorus a capella, the second band is now available, containing canons for mixed choir accompanied by a small brass ensemble.

When Ludwig van Beethoven wrote the present two works around 1800, the Romance as a genre designation for a soulful, melodious instrumental piece was anything but established, despite the occasional piece bearing this title. Beethoven himself named the pieces Romance in the autographs, but offered them to Breitkopf & Hartel for publication as Solo. His brother Karl even spoke of 2 Adagios to the publisher. Nevertheless, Beethoven's two Romances for violin achieved lasting popularity ever since the publication of the first editions in 1803 and 1805.The present Urtext edition takes the autographs and first editions as its main sources.

Pietro Nardini was the most important pupil of Tartini regarding both violin playing and composition. Like his teacher, he attached special significance to the beauty of sound and the -suitability for singing, as is shown by reports of his contemporaries. Leopold Mozart, for example, wrote in one of his letters that he had heard a certain Nardini and that there could not be heard anything more beautiful in the tonal beauty, purity, harmony and in the singable taste. The two concertos in A major and F major consist of three movements with the traditional tempo order quick-slow-quick, each movement giving the soloist the opportunity to play a solo cadence.

In 1884 the Norwegian city of Bergen celebrated the 200th birthday of Ludvig Holberg, one of its most famous sons and a symbolic figure of the late Baroque era. For this occasion Grieg wrote the piano suite Aus Holbergs Zeit , which he orchestrated for string orchestra. To this day, the Suite - particularly in this arrangement - ranks among Grieg's most popular works. By using the romantic string sound, Grieg brings the late Baroque orchestral suite and its various dance forms to life again. Along with the string serenades of Dvorak and Tchaikovsky, Aus Holbergs Zeit is regarded as the third great late-romantic work for string orchestra. Breitkopf is currently preparing the release of new and complete performance material in the framework of its cooperation with Eulenburg.Breitkopf is currently preparing the release of new and complete performance material in the framework of its cooperation with Eulenburg.

Italy, Rome particularly, has been unfathomed source of inspiration for several compositions by Kai Nieminen (1953-), starting from his neo-impressionistic orchestral piece Vicoli in ombra (1995). Some twenty years later, in 2016 he wrote Frammenti dal buio... (inspirazioni Caravaggesche) for Trio la Rue. Basically, the work is combination of sacred and profane. Caravaggio, short story by Antonio Tabucchi and three paintings, Saint Francis in Prayer (1610), Saint Francis of Assisi in Ecstasy (1595), and Medusa (1597), all by Caravaggio, church bells, and a puppet theater near Villa Lante in Rome gave inspiration to the composer during the composition process. Trio la Rue gave the first performance on 26th October, 2016 at Villa Lante.

Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) wrote a lot of songs, several of which Jacob de Haan has arranged for ensemble of variable strength. The songs are: Fremad! Fremad!, Stille Nu! and Fola, Fola, Blakken. It has been arranged for beginner bands and can be played with a minimum of four players (+ percussion).

Cesar Franck wrote his Symphony in D minor in 1887/88; in spite of the work's lukewarm reception at its world premiere on 17 February 1889, the work was published during his lifetime. It was not until a few years later that the established conductors dared perform this work more frequently . It marked the inevitable triumph of a work which had once caused such a furor and whose individuality of conception burst the framework of the genre (double tonality of D and F minor in the opening movement; the combination of Andante and Scherzo in the central one; the recapitulation of the main themes and motifs of the previous movements in the finale). The work was finally accepted into the concert repertoire for good around the turn of the century, not least through the good offices of influential critics and composers.Just as with the previously published Carnival of the Animals (PB/OB 5321) by Saint-Saens, Franck's work also raises many questions concerning its origin and history. Peter Jost based his work on the first edition (the autograph was destroyed in a fire in 1935) as well as on the piano reduction (four-handed) by the composer.A major work of the late-romantic repertoire, Cesar Franck's only symphony joins the ranks of Breitkopf & Hartel's new orchestral editions which follow the principles of Source Criticism for Practical Use.

'I wrote Naive Waltz in the early 90s for a dance piece called “Zeche 2†in Bochum, Germany. It was one of a few waltzes in that production and the only one to survive the passing of time,' says Elena Kats-Chernin. Shortly afterwards, the composer herself arranged the original piano solo version for string quartet; this is the form in which the musically restrained piece is included onthe Acacia Quartet's complete recording of her music for this instrumentation.

Carol of the Bells is a holiday tune that my students request year after year, particularly my beginning players. I wrote this arrangement with the goal of creating something that was well within the reach of beginning players--with simple notes and rhythms, and in a range where they could produce good tone and intonation. The addition of We Three Kings makes it a little more interesting for the player and the listener. I hope your students enjoy this arrangement!
