The Exeter Book is a collection of many different writings and is generally acknowledged to be one of the great works of the English Benedictine revival of the tenth century. Among the other texts in the Exeter Book, there are over ninety riddles or kennings. The difference between a riddle and a kenning, is that the answer to a riddle is in itself meaningless - a means to an end, a guessing game. The Kennings of the Exeter Book, on the other hand, are part of an ancient tradition of learning through memorable metaphor, much valued in the Anglo-Saxon world.

John Stanleyâ??s 30 Voluntaries (translatable as preludes), published in three collections as opp. 5, 6 and 7, are among the best known organ works of the 18th century. These free-style compositions were received with great appreciation by his contemporaries; the first volume, published in 1748, immediately achieved canonical status and encouraged other composers to write similar collections. The pieces, of easy to medium difficulty, are for manuals (alternatively, they can also be played on the harpsichord) and comprise two movements, slow and fast, many of which are characterized by a certain rhythmic energy and richness of color, expressed through the use of solo registers such as cornet and trumpet, with multiple echo effects, here adapted and transformed into piano, forte, and playing near the sound board effect, limiting, or rather modifying, their results.

This five-movement work for piano, string quintet, oboe, horn, mezzo and soprano soloists, and SATB choir was commissioned in 2020 by Gary Packwood, director of choral studies at Mississippi State University, and dedicated to the Mississippi State University State Singers for the opening of the new music building. The piece is based on Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood by the English Romantic poet William Wordsworth. These writings, along with others, represent the greatest lyrics of his maturity. In these poems Wordsworth presents a fully developed yet morally flexible picture of the relationship between human beings and the natural world. When Wordsworth completed this work in 1804, he called it simply Ode, and the poem carried this title when it was published in 1807. In 1815, when the poem was republished, Wordsworth expanded the title to Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood. Intimations means hints, inklings, or indirect suggestions. Track Listing: Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood The glory and freshness of a dream Ye blessed creatures, I have heard the call Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting Full soon thy Soul shall have her earthly freight Of the eternal silence A cappella works by Michael John Trotta Justitiae Domini Ubi Caritas Dies Irae.

Debussy's Premiere Rhapsodie is one of two concertante works completed, premiered and published during his lifetime. He was commissioned to write it in 1909 for the final examination at the Paris Conservatoire in 1910. Debussy orchestrated it in the summer of 1911. While transferring the clarinet part from the already published version for clarinet and piano, he made a few subtle changes, particularly in m. 201, which has been a bone of contention among clarinettists for over a century. The present scholarly-critical publication is the first Urtext edition of the orchestral version. It draws on every known source and takes into account a previously ignored source that sheds new light on the piece.

I have recently been incredibly inspired by the writings of the great Bengali mystic Rabindranath Tagore, whose monumental collection of poetry Gitanjali won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. This book introduces the reader to a new awareness of the world that surrounds us, deepening the connection between nature and the human spirit that we all yearn for. Verse 69 is particularly joyful and life-affirming: an ecstatic realization of the energies that move in ceaseless ebb and flow through us, our lives, and our natural environment. Each individual line of this verse has a unique character and color, so I have placed each in a key that I feel suits the mood of the text. The constantly flowing ostinati that weave their way throughout are collectively a musical representation of the “stream of life†to which Tagore refers. This flowing line can be found even in the subdued third line of text, which makes reference to the “ocean-cradle of birth and of death.†In similar fashion, the more complex rhythmic cells found within the stream (e.g., measures 21–40) are a product of Tagore’s ecstatic tone. Ultimately this piece is simply meant to be an expression of joy. It is dedicated with great admiration to the commissioning ensemble, the Fort Myers High School Greenwave Singers, and their conductor Matt Koller. This tremendous ensemble is a prime example of choral music education in practice in the United States, and I feel honored to have been given this opportunity to work with them. —Thomas LaVoy.

The Little Negro was originally composed by Claude Debussy (1862-1918) for piano in 1909. The purpose was to write a great work that could also played by children. Eugène Bozza made the piece even more accessible in 1984 by arranging it for wind quintet. The Little Negro is marked Allegro and begins with a theme modelled on ragtime music, a style which was very popular at the time of composition. Jazz influences, the C major key signature, 2/4 meter and upbeat features make for an exciting and accessible piece for all the ensemble. Bozza's arrangement of Debussy's The Little Negro for a wind quintet made up of flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon and horn is a thrilling addition to the repertoire.

Aulis Sallinen was born in 1935 in Salmi on the northern shore of Lake Ladoga (which the Soviet Union claimed in 1944). His early musical experience was playing the violin. Improvising (including jazz) on the piano led him to write his first compositions as a teenager. After studying with Aarre Merikanto and Joonas Kokkonen at the Sibelius Academy, he joined the staff there. He was Administrator of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra (1960-69); Secretary and member of the Board (1958-73), then Chairman (1971-73) of the Finnish Composers' Society; member of the board of TEOSTO (Finnish copyright society) from 1970-84, then Chairman from 1988-90; he also served for several years on the Board of the Finnish National Opera. Here is the Facsimile of the Sixth Symphony that was composed over 1989-1990, and commissioned and first performed by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

In January 1834, the great violinist Niccolo Paganini asked Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) to write a viola concerto so that he could showcase his newly-acquired Stradivarius, though Paganini rejected the work when he saw that he would not be playing continuously. HAROLD EN ITALIE (HAROLD IN ITALY), Op. 16/ H. 68, inspired by the travels of the Byronic hero, premiered on November 23, 1834, with the Orchestre de la Societe des Concerts du Conservatoire. Chretien Urhan performed as soloist instead of Paganini under the baton of Narcisse Girard. Rather than a concerto, it is more accurately described as a symphony with viola obbligato. Hearing it at a December 1838 concert, an ecstatic Paganini pulled the composer back onto the stage and knelt to kiss his hand. Franz Liszt prepared a piano transcription with viola accompaniment of the work in 1836 as S.472. Taking its title from a poem about grief and loss by Chrissie Pinney, Live On honors the life of band director Linda Mann, to whom the piece is dedicated. The piece begins with a pensive intro before shifting to a whimsical theme that brings about happy thoughts of a life well-lived. After a return to the poignant opening material, the music surges to a triumphant conclusion based on an augmented version of the whimsical theme.Live On was commissioned by Diplomat Middle School's staff, faculty and students, in Cape Coral, Florida, and is dedicated to the memory of their Director of Bands, Linda Mann. Director of Orchestras, Roland Forti, championed the commissioning of this piece to honor the life of Linda after her untimely passing in February of 2017. Linda Mann’s impact on the field of music education was profound and wide-reaching. She was a beloved member of the staff at Diplomat Middle School, as well as the music community of Cape Coral and the state of Florida. Linda was highly respected throughout the state, serving as recent past-president of the Florida Bandmasters Association. In discussing the type of piece the school wanted to honor Ms. Mann, they indicated the piece should “depict Linda’s personality: dynamic, sassy, yet thoughtful and almost mentor-like.†They wanted a piece that was upbeat, yet still had moments that were thoughtful, portraying the grief that the Diplomat Middle School community has suffered from the sudden loss of such a beloved teacher. After contemplating their thoughts, I did some research to find inspiration for the piece. This led me to poetry about grief and loss. In time, I stumbled upon a short, yet poignant poem that I felt perfectly depicted the sentiment that I wanted the piece to convey. That poem is entitled Live On by Chrissie Pinney.Live OnNow as I live onWithout youI hope to keepThe pieces of youThat I loved so dearlyYour mannerismsAnd compassionate characterAnd smiles through struggleSo that youMay live on too -Chrissie PinneyI reached out to Ms. Pinney, and she graciously agreed to allow me to quote her powerful poem in these notes. She expressed that she was deeply touched that her work would inspire me to write a piece in honor of Linda Mann. The piece begins with a poignant, pensive opening section. The use of the musical interval of a tritone between the first two openly voiced chords are used to represent the sadness we all feel from this type of loss. When I sat in front of my piano and started to work on this piece, my hands seemed to naturally and immediately play these first two chords, which set the process in motion of composing the piece. After the somber opening, the piece shifts to a whimsical theme that I hope brings about happy thoughts of Linda and her personality. It was also my intent, however, to include some musical dissonance in the theme that still reflected the bittersweet loss at the same time. The piece develops into a secondary theme that is a quasi inversion of the main fast theme. This section is followed by a return of the opening material, with snippets of the fast theme intertwined, before the piece builds to a triumphant, augmented presentation of the main theme in a lush form to complete the work.It is my hope that in some small way, this piece will bring comfort to those affected by the loss of Linda Mann, and that the music will allow her memory to Live On.–Larry ClarkLakeland, FL 2017.

Thierry Pecou's demanding Sextet for piano and wind quintet can be played by students and professional ensembles alike. The composer got his inspiration to write this piece from listening to a gamelan orchestra at the Expo 2010 in Shanghai. What mattered to Pecou in this composition, however, was not just imitating the music styles of Bali or Java. The Sextet rather gives a very personal answer to the intensive impression the exotic sounds had made on the composer. Smoothly flowing lines in the flute part emerge next to fine-tuned chord clusters, echoing the original sound spectrum of gamelan gongs.
