The
cantata Argre dich, o
Seele, nicht BWV 186 is
in a sense the companion
work to the much
better-known cantata Herz

Leben BWV 147. Both were
composed in Advent 1716
as Bach's last two
cantatas for the Weimar
court, and both were
arranged for another
Sunday in Bach's first
Leipzig cantata cycle by
the addition of
recitatives and a
large-scale chorale
movement, heard at the
end of both parts. The
sound of the Cantata BWV
186 is characterized by
the four-part woodwind
ensemble writing. The
final chorale, heard
twice, anticipates the
opening choruses of the
chorale cantatas from
Bach's second cycle.

The
collection Polyhymnia
Caduceatrix & Panegyrica
of 1619 is rightly
regarded as the high
point in Michael
Praetorius's output. It
combines Solennische
Friedt- und
Frewden-Concert: which
Praetorius as a
travelling musician had
composed largely for
festive occasions - he
writes of Kayser: Konig:
Chur: vnd Furstlichen
zusammen Kunfften - and
also for furnehme
Capellen vnd Kirchen. In
these chorael concerti
the highly modern,
Italian style and the
Protestant chorale
combine and form a
symbiosis which showed
the way forward for the
history of German music.
The chorale settings draw
on influences from
Venetian polychoral
music, use ritornelli and
employ obbligato
instruments in a way
which is beyond compare,
even in contemporary
Italy. Here we see a
quite different side of
the master from the
composer of Es ist ein
Ros entsprungen. And
above all, Praetorius
always remains a
practical musician who
ensures that these
breathtaking chorale
concerti can also be
effectively performed
with smaller forces,
sometimes considerably
reduced ones. In the
chorale setting Wie schon
leuchtet der Morgenstern
Praetorius wrote for a
five-part ensemble which
is joined in some
sections by a four-part
capella. For the
ensemble, Praetorius
suggested both voices and
instruments, which he
uses in a sophisticated
texture of sound, the
instruments sometimes
duplicating the voices
and sometimes alternating
with them. Score

The opening
movement of Bach's
chorale cantata on
Luther's In deepest need
I cry to you BWV 38,
which was composed for
the 21st Sunday after
Trinity Sunday, belongs
to a group of cantatas
whose opening choruses
are not concertante but
have been kept in the
style of a motet; the
instruments merely
amplify the vocal parts.
The archaic character of
the movement is
emphasized by the
addition of a trombone
quartet. An exciting
recitative and an aria
full of pungent harmonies
is followed by an
entirely unusual
recitative in which the
chorale melody forms the
bass foundation for the
vocal part. A second aria
- which is no less
unusual -is a trio which
is only accompanied by
the continuo; it leads
into the concluding
chorale which, pursuant
to the 1st line of text
Ob bei uns ist der Sunden
viel, already begins with
a brusque dissonance.

The cantata
Sei Lob und Ehr dem
hochsten Gut (All glory
to the Lord of Lords) BWV
117 is one of a small
group of Bach's chorale
cantatas which use
exclusively the text of
the chorale, including in
the three recitatives and
three arias. Only the
autograph score of the
cantata survives;
although this enables an
approximate dating to be
made (c. 1730), it does
not give the occasion for
which the cantata was
written. The choice of
chorale may indicate it
was composed for a
wedding. Recently it has
been suggested that the
occasion for its
composition was the
birthday of the Duke of
Weissenfels in 1731; but
there is no firm evidence
to support either theory.
The cantata opens with an
extended movement for
chorus in which Bach
contrasts the concertante
orchestra with festive,
almost homophonic choral
writing. This chorus
movement is repeated at
the end. A simple chorale
movement which comes
fourth indicates that the
nine-movement cantata was
performed in two
sections. Score and parts
available separately -
see item CA.3111700.

Homilius is
known for having always
searched for new forms in
order to avoid any
schematic pattern. Thus,
one looks in vain in the
present cantata for
arias. The opening choir
is introduced by two
choral groups: One calls
to take up the fight
against the devil, while
the other fearfully
hesitates and finally, in
the chorale Jesus
Christus, wohn uns bei
agrees to join in.
Following each of the
three stanzas of the
embellished chorale, in a
recitative the hesitant
one is given courage
before he also takes up
arms, in a confident
final chorus. Score and
parts available

A
short choral nocturne for
SATB and organ, Pan
ddaw ust y nos is a
setting of a poem by
Nesta Wyn Jones. Welsh
speakers will respond to
the subtle imagery and
verbal nuance of the
poet's wordplay, as well
as to the intense lyric
moment of charged
reminiscence captured
both in her evocation of
bygone summer evenings
and in Rhian Samuel's
simple, evocative music.
Pan ddaw ust y

the London Welsh Chorale,
conductor Kenneth Bowen,
was premiered at St
David's Cathedral, West
Wales, on 24 September
2005. An English
translation by the
composer is also
included.

O
Sapientia is a tender
setting of one of the
seven Advent 'O'
Antiphons. The rhythmic
unison in this
chorale-like setting
brings an element of
purity and calm, typical
of Skempton's musical
language.
About Oxford
New
Horizons
N
ew Horizons showcases the
wealth of exciting,
innovative, and
occasionally challenging
choral music being
written today. It
encompasses the whole
gamut of small-scale
choral genres, both
secular and sacred, and
includes pieces for
upper-voice and mixed
choirs. With titles by
some of the most
accomplished choral
composers active in Great
Britain and abroad, the
series introduces new
repertoire and fresh
talent to a broad
spectrum of choirs. New
Horizons features
composers with growing
reputations for quality
composition reflecting a
strong individual voice.
The series is continually
expanding and should be
the first place to look
for attractive and
performable contemporary
choral music.

As
in all cantatas for St.
Michael the chorale
cantata Lord God, we
praise thee all of us BWV
130 from 1724 is a
magnificent composition.
Not only in the opening
chorus and the final
chorale do the three
trumpets and timpani play
a role, but the first
aria In hell the serpent,
hot with hate is even
accompanied solely by
trumpets, timpani and
continuo. The second
aria, Thou, of cherubim
the master, brings an
unexpected contrast in
which, besides the tenor
and continuo, on a solo
flute is heard. The
original set of parts
were separated from each
other in the 19th century
and today are scattered
throughout the world. For
the first time, some of
the parts were taken into
consideration in
preparing this edition.
