Mozart ((1756 – 1791)) Saxophone Trio, flexible instrumentation Divertimento in B Flat K.439b by Mozart, arranged for sax trio, flexible instrumentation. This is number two of a set of five divertimentos written around 1783. Originally, the works were written for 3 basset horns but were also performed by other wind and string ensembles. They are commonly performed by two clarinets and a bassoon today. This arrangement is for saxophone trio with flexible scoring.Divertimento in B Flat has five movements: Allegro (Common time, tempo around 124 bpm, B-flat major throughout, about 2.25 minutes) Minuetto 1 (3/4 time, tempo around 124-136 bpm, ABA form, B-flat major to E-flat major to B-flat, about 3.75 minutes) Larghetto (3/4 time, tempo around 60 bpm, B flat major throughout, about 4 minutes) Minuetto 2 (3/4 time, tempo around 136 – 144 bpm, ABA form, B-flat major to F to B-flat major, about 3.5 minutes) Rondo (2/4 time, tempo around 144 – 152 bpm, ABACA form, B-flat major except when the C section wanders to F minor, about 3.25 minutes) The first movement features a lively main theme and a carefree, somewhat mellow alternate theme. Minuet 1 has a graceful main theme and relaxed, somewhat playful trio section. The movement three Larghetto is slow and dreamy. It even seems to yawn when the music several times indulges in long pauses. The second Minuet movement is livelier and a bit more colorful and playful than the first with a lively trio section. Danse Noble is an elegant little piece that began life as a work for piano. The alto and tenor saxes trade melody and counter melody statements while the bari sax provides a quiet bass line. The arrangement for saxophone trio is raised one semi-tone from the original key of A to B flat. A good choice for an intermediate group of players. Moderate tempo in 3/4 time with a middle section slightly faster in the parallel minor key. The parts are very independent. Performance time is about 3.5 minutes.  The late 19th century French composer Émile Paladilhe is mostly forgotten today but in his time was well respected and admired. His works were performed throughout the concert halls and opera stages of Europe. Today singers remember him for a few of songs and oboists for his “Solo for Oboe†also known as “Concertanteâ€. Although called a trio sonata, it does not follow the typical format of a Baroque trio sonata. Each of the three movements are quite short – think of it as a trio sonata in miniature. Together, all three movements take less than five minutes to perform. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd parts are included for both E flat and B flat instruments. The parts may be combined as desired. The short length and moderate range of the piece make this a good choice for intermediate players. Movement 1, Allegro in C major, is in common time. Movement 2, Adagio in A minor, is in  common time. Movement 3, Vivace in C major, is in 3/4 time.

Far Reaching Vista (From Here to Eternity) is a Tone Poem for Instrumental Trio reminiscent of Les Six (the Parisian composers Poulenc, Auric, Durey, Milhaud, Honnegar, Tailleferre). I have used 20th century harmonies, alternating Time Signatures of 4/4 and 6/4, and many, many markings which require interpretation and musicianship. His String Quintet in E major, Op. 11, No. 5, G 275, was written in 1771 and published in 1775, and is one of his most famous works.The quintet is famous for its minuet and trio, third movement which is often played as an independent piece outside the context of the full quintet. This is notably the most famous, it is in 3/4 time, in the key of E Major modulating to A Major. This is a beautiful work, and not just the third movement, with good partial writing for all. The lovely, flowing melodies and rhythms are typical of Boccherini. The quintet is suitable for both concerts and home performances.
