La Casa‘l Señor Cura & El MandilÃn: these traditional folk tune from Asturias (Spain) are arranged for two melody instruments and is one of a number of folk tune arrangements by the UK based folk duo Na-Mara. Written in 2/4 time in the key of A, La Casa‘l Señor Cura & El MandilÃn can be played as a duet on two mandolins or on any C clef instruments (violins, ukuleles, flutes etc), with the guitar chords accompanying the individual players. We came across this particular tune played by the Asturian band Niundes from their album Enxamás Ye Pa Siempres.Performance tips: this is intermediate level piece played allegro or medium fast speed. We have added a second melody part to the original tune, and this makes a nice interplay between the melody instruments. Both parts interplay and inter-wind so it is a good exercise to work on the balance between the two instruments, varying the dynamics on some of the repeated sections. The guitar accompaniment can be played with strummed chords. This make a nice set when it is coupled with our arrangement of the Spanish Asturian folk tune, Les Dancites

They have also used it alongside other tunes in workshops as a teaching and learning resource, introducing players to tunes from different parts of the Celtic world. La fosca tragedia di Aphra Behn, portata sulle scene nel 1676 senza musica, viene riproposta nel 1695 alla riapertura del Drury Lane Theatre. La vicenda di Abdelazer, principe moresco che per vendicare l’assassinio del padre cerca subdolamente di usurpare il trono di Spagna attraverso l’affetto della regina spagnola, viene introdotta da una solenne Ouverture in tonalità minore che ne evidenzia la drammaticità . La tragedia suscita pochi entusiasmi tra il pubblico che, peraltro, apprezza moltissimo le musiche di Purcell e soprattutto la canzone finale Lucinda is bewitching fair, affidata al cantante tredicenne Jemmy Bowen, che viene pubblicata immediatamente come Aria a sé stante; le musiche poi verranno pubblicate postume nel 1697 come suite per archi e basso continuo nella quale l’ordine dei movimenti è differente da quella adottata per l’esecuzione teatrale.La suite è formata da Ouverture, Rondeau, Air I & II, Minuetto, Air, Giga, Hornpipe, Air. Il Minuetto è un pezzo di particolare eleganza, ma è il Rondeau che ha assicurato alla suite fama duratura; questo movimento è alla base della celebre composizione di Benjamin Britten Guida all’orchestra per i giovani, Variazioni e fuga su un tema di Henry Purcell. Il Rondeau, poi, è stato utilizzato come tema per la serie TV della BBC del 1969 The First Churchills e come sottofondo musicale per gioco Intellivision Thunder Castle del 1986; lo troviamo anche nel film di Joe Wright Orgoglio e pregiudizio, eseguito durante il ballo a Netherfield.

For the straight way was lost was commissioned and premiered by The Darkwood Consort in Boise, Idaho. But it has since been performed throughout the US and Europe many times in many duet combinations: Bb Clarinet and Viola, Bb Clarinet and Cello; Alto Sax and Viola, Alto Sax and Cello, and Viola and Bass Clarinet (the original!). The live video concert performance seen here is for Bb Clarinet and Cello, performed by Natalie Grata and Chris Erickson in Orlando, Florida. The title became unintentionally more and more appropriate over time, as the work has undergone multiple revisions and tweaking, and experiments. The title comes from a passage in Dante’s The Divine Comedy, and I chose it because, first, it includes the name of the ensemble that commissioned it from me, but second, it also seems a good description of how the compositional process sometimes goes and did go with this piece; sometimes while working, the piece takes unexpected turns (almost of its own volition) that must then be dealt with: Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vitami retrovai per una selva oscura,che la diritta via era smarrita. He's performed across the globe, including Canada, the USA, Mexico, Germany, England, Ireland, Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, and more. Nick has toured with award winning multi-genre bands that play jazz, folk, pop, latin, Celtic, klezmer, classical, ska, and others. He plays trombone, conch shells, bass, and sings. Some of his bands include the Juno winning Paperboys, Locarno, and Michael Kaeshammer. His arrangements are used by many different bands ranging from middle school string programs to high school and professional R&B bands to major touring artists. All of Nick's R&B charts have been tested and performed by multiple high school, college level, and professional groups. They’re well written, accurate, high energy, and fun! Charts include vocal cues at the start of new phrases or sections on all the parts.
