New for September 2020 this is a very fresh take on this traditional classic and has been launched into a crazy swing/groove style! It's a great showstopper and a real joy to play. The piece includes playful interplay and new original material/solo/s. Ukrainian Folk Carol is just one of five pieces from 'Christmas Jazz - Volume 2' Flute edition (also available in Bb sax, Eb sax and Bb clarinet editions) which also includes; Deck the halls (Piazzolla-inspired style), The Holly and the Ivy - a smooshy smooth jazz ballad with original solo/s, Away in a manger - again, a gentle smooth jazz style, and O Holy Night (which has cheeky interplay, yet sweeping original lines too). All the pieces are aimed at early intermediate-confident intermediate level (typical UK exam grades from grade 4-6) so are achievable by most players (and don't take weeks and weeks of preparation; very important at the busy festive time!).There is also a 'Christmas Jazz - Volume 1' collection by the same composers (which includes; God rest ye merry gentlemen, Silent night, The first nowell, Hark the herald, and I saw three ships - all of which are available on SMP, or search for Christmas Jazz volume 1 if you'd like to buy the collection at a bargain price).

In the first movement, an overall A minor feel is challenged by the near-atonal way in which the main gesture is developed; and by the intermittently chromatic, pentatonic and whole-tone scalic material which emerges in the piano accompaniment. In the coda [from bar 100] obsessive repetition of chords and single notes threatens to take over, until the tension is resolved onto bare E's (the note with which the movement began). Part of this movement was written in Siena on a summer holiday with my parents; the vivid presence of the Tuscan cicadas is echoed in the flute's fluttertonguing. The Passacaglia second movement can also be performed as a standalone piece. Shades of Bartok's 'night music' style are evident in the central section, where after a short flute cadenza the soloist flutters and mutters above limpid piano arpeggios. In the outer sections, a calm flute melody appears above the block chords of the piano's passacaglia cycle. In contrast to the heat of Italy, this movement was inspired by the image of an icy river connecting different wintry landscapes of cold light snow. A scherzo finale rounds off the sonata, dominated by trills emerging from a theme which rhythmically reconfigures the main gesture from the opening movement. In the central Trio [bars 39-49] the melody from the second movement is recalled to bind everything together. As with the first movement, the coda [from bar 99] develops its own repetitive momentum.

TJHoltMusic #6134009. Published by TJHoltMusic (A0.1021619). Sonata for Flute and Piano, Op. 12 was written for and is dedicated to my friend, Natalie Smith. This sonata conveys different moods using various styles in each of the movements, all of which take some liberty and, at times, are vague with form.The first movement, inspired by Claude Debussy, uses a quasi mirror form, with the two motives connecting with a sudden yet seamless tempo change, which is supported by the driving rhythm in the piano, and a development in the middle of the movement.The second movement is a funeral march and is based on the chord progression built around the sustained B natural in the flute, which conveys a dreamlike atmosphere. As the progression transforms, there is an increasing sense of dread that unfolds until this feeling becomes primal before collapsing in on itself at the climax of the movement. From there, the progression returns more actively with, although not as strong as before, a sense of dread still present for the remainder of the movement. The movement is in ternary form (ABA), with a development in the first A section.The third movement is a more clearly defined rondo form and is based on themes that undergo subtle changes each time they return. Other themes include a recurring call and response between the treble and bass lines in the piano, which the flute participates in this exchange when it is presented again later, a reference to the second movement's progression, and a modal theme that floats in terms of harmonic and melodic structure. When the initial theme returns for the final time, a coda restates previous ideas as the finale gradually increases its tempo and concludes the piece. This movement is the most technically challenging, especially considering that I asked Natalie how fast she can double tongue. In general, there are a fair amount of high passages and big leaps. Friction was composed at the beginning for the 8th International Academy for New Composition and Audio Art Avantgarde Schwaz 2000 (Tirol/ Austria), during the Summer 2000. The initial line up adjusted to the Academie’s ensemble in residence Het trio (Flute, Bass Clarinet, Piano) plus Alto Saxophone. Almost One year later I revised the piece and slightly changed the instrumentation, using Violoncello instead of Alto Sax. That gave to the piece more timbral variety with better balance as well as expressed better the work’s musical idea. The starting point of the work is the characteristics of Friction a real world sounding event, which then is abstracted and applied to form the idea for the compositional process. The work has three main sections. The first section is quite homophonic and harmonic; the middle one is inharmonic and energetic and works as crossfade to the last section, which is characterized as a more linear with repeated patterns. The transformation from one section to another is the most important and long part of the composition. It is a kind of transformation of the sound itself, a timbral exploration of the characteristics of the initial idea. Moreover, electroacoustic techniques are modeled using acoustic instrumental means. To achieve that I make use conventional musical instruments, utilizing extended performance techniques (which I could call timbral techniques). As well, instruments coupled with the use of unconventional objects treated as musical instruments or extensions of them (boxes, plastic or metal cards etc). That allows a better development, control and transformation of the sound. Friction was awarded the Second Prize at The Second Seoul International Competition for Composers in Seoul/ Korea and was Finalist at The Ensemble Eleven Young Composers Competition 2002 in Manchester/ United Kingdom. - Panayiotis Kokoras, York 2001-.

The flutist, composer and professor of music Theophilus Bucher had a settled and successful life after his immigration to England, where he is reported as newly arrived in 1831. We are lucky to have a monument at his grave in Edinburgh (in the Dean Cemetery) which gives both his date and place of birth, as well as the date and place of his demise. Theophile Bucher was born at Schlestadt, Alsace, on March 13, 1802, and died at Edinburgh, December 20, 1871. The obituary published in Signale für die Musikalische Welt, in March 1872, which states he came from Naples, from French parents. That obituary, although in German, gives his name in the French form of Theophile Boucher, the only source which gives this spelling for his surname. Certainly, his early successes and earliest publications seem to be in Naples, although he is reported in other parts of Italy as well. The pieces are intended as supplementary material to your usual tutor books. The music can be used with any number of players and the pieces remain in the lower register. Several early pieces use only the notes B, A and G and the key of G major predominates. Six of the pieces use only half notes (minims) and quarter notes (crotchets). The low C, a tricky note for many beginners, has been avoided almost completely. On the one occasion it appears, the note C an octave above is given as optional. Although the pieces are arranged in approximate order of difficulty you can play them in any order you want, depending on the musical needs of the student. Your students are sure to enjoy these pieces, which are both easy on the fingers and easy on the ear! The music is identical to that in the companion book My Recorder and Me. Several pieces have a few measures (bars) rest in the middle not only to give the player a break and add musical contrast but also to give the experience of counting empty bars during the music. When space allows, piano cues appear in the solo part. Some of the later pieces in the book have good performing potential and could be strung together in any order to create a small suite. Every piece has a short piano introduction so that the student can sense the tempo and musical style before playing. The keyboard accompaniments have been kept as simple as possible with the minimum number of notes. Dynamic markings (e.g. piano and mezzo-forte) are used from the start, but phrasing has been omitted from the solo part. This is because the teacher is usually in the best position to suggest phrasing within the physical capabilities of each student. Transcribing orchestral pieces for the flute presents certain difficulties, such as playing loudly and with a full tone in the lower register or producing high notes that gradually fade away. Despite these challenges, the purpose is to challenge the flute's traditional role and explore its expressive capabilities through this repertoire.

In the middle there is a flamboyant flute cadenza which leads us into a calm, ethereal, slightly mysterious section, before the lively, mischievous waltzy jig returns, to eventually lead us into a beautiful calm, dignified ending derived from the somber opening melody but now with glorious, positive harmony and a feeling that all is right and good.

It has words by English author Eleanor Farjeon and was inspired by the village of Alfriston in East Sussex, then set to a traditional Scottish Gaelic tune known as Bunessan [1] (it shares this tune with the 19th century Christmas Carol Child in the Manger[2]). The hymn originally appeared in the second edition of Songs of Praise (published in 1931), to the tune Bunessan, composed in the Scottish Islands. In Songs of Praise Discussed, the editor, Percy Dearmer, explains that as there was need for a hymn to give thanks for each day, English poet and children's author Eleanor Farjeon had been asked to make a poem to fit the lovely Scottish tune. A slight variation on the original hymn, also written by Eleanor Farjeon, can be found in the form of a poem contributed to the anthology Children's Bells, under Farjeon's new title, A Morning Song (For the First Day of Spring), published by Oxford University Press in 1957. The song is noted in 9/4 time but with a 3/4 feel. Bunessan had been found in L. McBean's Songs and Hymns of the Gael, published in 1900.[5] Before Farjeon's words, the tune was used as a Christmas carol, which began Child in the manger, Infant of Mary, translated from the Scottish Gaelic lyrics written by Mary MacDonald. The English-language Roman Catholic hymnal also uses the tune for the James Quinn hymns, Christ Be Beside Me and This Day God Gives Me, both of which were adapted from the traditional Irish hymn St. Patrick's Breastplate. The turbulent opening is immediately arresting. and one can imagine the swirling wind flowing around powerfully. Pulsing rhythms and captivating brass lines reinforce this sense of power, before the mood breaks into a more gentle duo moment for flute and harp. Knehans' orchestration is imaginative and full of colour, making effective use of different timbral combinations and creating a transparency of texture through the use of solo lines from around the orchestra. The flute part is dazzling and takes centre stage with a sense of charismatic virtuosity. Challenging and exhilarating throughout, the first movement has the sort of energy one might associate with the opening movement of the lbert concerto, but intensified and developed to reflect the 21st century flute and the modem world. The second movement has a greater sense of stillness, and the flute line weaves around relatively static strings, low woodwind. Despite the stillness, an underlying intensity gives the music a brooding feel; this is music that deals with profound ideas, and as such, it is vital that the music, too, has depth. Knehans has achieved this convincingly; this is a piece which demands attention and holds you in its spell. The final movement is full of rhythmic punchiness and fantastic orchestral energy. The scoring is once again highly imaginative, making use of bassoons and low brass in pounding rhythms punctuated by the strings. Over all of this, (flutist) Gareth Davies astonishes and dazzles; displaying not only a phenomenal technique but also a magnetic energy and charisma which is spellbinding . One of that set was called Pleasant Landscape, which I have freely arranged for accompanied Instrumental Solo. I have slowed it down considerably from the original and marked it with passionate energy. The beauty and interest is created by the shaping and phrasing of this beautiful melodic line. It has a rubato feeling throughout with constant tempo changes like rall, molto rall, freely, accel, etc. In keeping with the characteristics of the Romantic period my arrangement is full of interpretive marks in every measure making it a great piece for auditions to show your technique and interpretation. Not too difficult to play but sounds quite advanced when all details are observed. The equally beautiful piano part provides great interplay of expressive harmony and countermelody. A beautiful piece to show your expressive musicianship and impress them in either concert or audition. Marked Intermediate due to the plethora of markings to observe, musicianship that is required for a mature performance, and a 2 octave range that will push the limits of some instruments.3:10 minutes, 5 page score, 2 page solo partTemporary recording of a piano reduction of total score.
