The piece opens with the tune altered to G mixolydian mode. As the word exploited appears, a sinister-sounding E flat enters the harmony. Open octaves between soprano and bass show the emptying, followed by a shift to E phrygian mode with the word slave. Several dissonances emerge as the narrative gets darker. The flute and clà rsach represent chaos or hell with an aleatoric interlude of extended techniques involving tongue rams, flutter tonguing, multiphonics, spoken syllables, and lever glissandi. The harp then joyfully proclaims the new tonality of G major in a fanfare to introduce the text of praise and exaltation. The original source tune returns harmonically restored to G major.

It is most appropriate for church choirs to sing during communion service, especially during Lent. It is also appropriate for concert performance by choruses/choirs of students, amateur adults or professionals. Here is an English translation of the text: Hail, true body, born of the Virgin Mary, having truly suffered, sacrificed on the cross for mankind, from whose pierced side flowed water and blood, be for us a foretaste (of heaven) in the test of death. O sweet Jesus, O holy Jesus, O Jesus, son of Mary, have mercy on us. Amen. There are many settings of this text by well-known composers including W.A. Mozart and William Byrd. This setting, like that of Byrd, is for unaccompanied voices, but is written in the homophonic texture and uses a few more modern harmonies. Performance time is approximately 2:24.

The peninsula at Gallipoli in Turkey is now marked with cemeteries; particularly striking are the graves of Australian and New Zealand infantry, which are marked with epitaphs provided by the families of the fallen. Five of these epitaphs have been included in the text for “Waves of Gallipoli,†along with lines from poet Leon Gellert, a Gallipoli veteran. In the music we can hear the undulating of the Aegean Sea lapping the coastline of Gallipoli, sad melismas complement the idea of “moaning;†following the epitaphs, a single voice sounds the bugle call, “The Last Post,†which is sounded at ANZAC (Australia and New Zealand Army Corp) Day dawn services each year, memorializing the soldiers who fell at Gallipoli.

The Heavens Are Telling is a very accessible classic SATB anthem for choir and organ.  I took two lines of music and lyrics from Haydn's 1797 oratorio The Creation and made that my chorus.  I then wrote verses using lyrics from other parts of The Creation and then wrote new music for the verses to sound like a continuation of Haydn's work.  The structure is through composed but with Ch/Vs/Ch/Vs/Ch/Ch with the final chorus having the lines reversed.  The piece makes a stately declaration of the wonders of God's creation of the heavens.  11 pages; 1:50 minutesThe range for each part is only 1 octave.Be the first choir to record this anthem and send me the link and I will post it.   plbeaman@gmail.com    Temporarily I have attached a recording of the vocal solo version, which is in another key, so you can get the text and main melody; which is then followed by a MIDI version of organ and 'aahs', to give you an idea of the SATB version.
