The second movement dramatizes Ruth’s devotion to Naomi and the love story of Ruth and Boaz that results from it.♫ Ruth and Boaz’ great grandson, David, used the phrase ‘valley of the shadow of death’ in Psalm 23. This phrase was the key emotive idea behind the movement. In order to give the music a feeling of authenticity, the composer researched the scales that Jewish people have used in the distant past. Present day cantors use scales that are centuries, probably millennia old. Two of these, the Ukrainian Dorian and the Magein Avot (along with the Mixolydian and Phrygian modes) form the harmonic vocabulary for Movement 2.♫ Ruth’s story is dramatic and a good vehicle for a tone poem. The first movement summarizes Ruth’s story of coming to faith and her loyalty and kindness to Naomi. The second movement dramatizes Ruth’s devotion to Naomi and the love story of Ruth and Boaz that results from it.♫ It was Boaz who first voiced the metaphor of a mother bird protecting her baby birds under her wings and how God does that for us. It was written in 1906 by headteacher Símun av Skarði, and the melody was composed in 1907 by violinist Petur Alberg.The song was written in a work dated 1 February 1906 by Símun av Skarði, the headmaster of a high school in Føgrulið, southwest of Klaksvík. It was written during a time of strong division in the Faroe Islands between conservatives who wanted to preserve Danish rule and autonomists who wanted more self-government, of which Símun was the latter.Violinist Petur Alberg wrote the first notes of the music of the anthem on 4 September 1907, after the melody came to him that evening. He later sang the melody down the phone in the Løgting to Símun av Skarði, who liked it. Petur then sent it to a music teacher he knew in Akureyri, Iceland, and to asked him to harmonise it for a male quartet. In October 1907, the male quartet arrangement arrived, and singers began to practice it for a Boxing Day concert in Sloan's Hall in Tórshavn. Petur, not daring to reveal the song's author, told the singers the song was Icelandic, by a certain Jón Sveinsson. However, the singers liked the song. The song was performed at the concert on 26 December 1907, which was the first time any song by Petur had been performed publicly and the first time Tú alfagra land mítt was performed publicly.On 8 January 1908, Tú alfagra land mítt was published in the Faroese newspaper Tingakrossur. It was then published in the Lesibók, a literary history in chronological order, in 1911. It was later published in many editions of the Songbók Føroya fólks (Faroese People's Songbook), generally in the number one position, from 1913 through 1959.In 1925, a Nynorsk translation of the song by Rolf Hjort Schøgen was published in the Tingakrossur. In 1928, a Danish translation by university student Tormod Jørgensen was published in Højskolebladet No. 7928.[1][2] An Icelandic translation by Jochum M. Eggertsson appeared in the magazine Dvöl in 1935. The same year, a German translation by Ernst Krenn was published in the Føroyaheftið (Faroese Instalment), a Faroese booklet at the Nordic Society in Vienna, Austria. In 1943, an English translation by Padre G. C. C. Knowleson was featured in the notes of the magazine The Pioneer by some British soldiers in the Faroe Islands during World War II. As the national anthem Tú alfagra land mítt won out in a rivalry with Eg oyggjar veit (I know some islands), from 1877, on which song should become the national anthem of the Faroe Islands. Tú alfagra land mítt has been sung at all festivals in the Faroe Islands, and it has been in the psalm book of the Faroese Church since 1990. The national radio station Útvarp Føroya, established in 1957, played it every night before ending its broadcast for the evening.

This musical piece is comprised of two twelve-tone rows, atonal music based on synthetic scales unique to each composition, which are based on medieval plainsong chants whose systemization was begun by Pope Gregory I during the sixth century AD. A simple explanation of this composition is that it is the world's oldest notated music combined with modern 20th-century music theory that eschews traditional melody and harmony for synthetic scales unique to each composition. The music is complex and dissonant, although the conversion of the two plainsong chants to twelve-tone rows retains a semblance of a tonal center at given points throughout. Still, the entire piece of music is that same melody utilized harmonically: just forward, backward, upside-down, backward and upside-down, rhythmically altered, transposed, displaced up or down, or split into smaller cells and then reprocessed in the same way mentioned above. I have also borrowed the Baroque Period techniques of the two-part invention and four-voice fugue combined with serial musical techniques that may offend the average listener's traditional musical sensibilities but make logical structural sense. I used the Dies Irae (The Day of Wrath) and Tuba Mirum (The Last Trumpet Call). The authorship of the chants has been attributed to many saints from Gregory to Thomas of Celano but probably evolved from early Jewish psalmody carried forward by the earliest Jewish converts to Christianity, which further developed into trochaic metered poetry by successive monks. It was set to memorized plainsong heralding back, in part, to Jewish worship. The text of the Dies Irae is very similar to Zephaniah 1:16​. The last trumpet call that raises the dead in Christ is comparable to the Apostle Paul's account written in his first epistle to the Corinthians Chapter 15 and first epistle to the Thessalonians Chapter 4. The two epistles may, or may not, be related to the Final of the Seven Trumpets bringing God's Judgement on the earth spoken of in Revelation 11. The relationship of the trumpet mentioned in the epistles to those written about in Revelation divides theologians, but I digress into unrelated matters. Despite the modern theory, the music is still movingly visceral because of its conceptually descriptive nature. It is full of aural symbolism following the Dies Irae and the Tuba Mirum, making it a type of program music ala Hector Berlioz of the Romantic Period. The music is, therefore, genuinely eclectic because it has blended qualities of several musical periods. The final section of the video explains the symbolism. The music difficulty is virtuosic, extremely taxing to play.

The first movement, in G major, is based on Psalm 34:8, blessed is the one who takes refuge in him, which commands the disciple to trust the Lord and see that the Lord is good rather than fear him. A dialogue between the disciple and the Lord takes place in each section of the piece, as the motives are based on call and response. The second movement, in B major, is based on the text from the doxology, Praise God, from whom all blessings flow, which is represented through the use of the pedal and melodic content, as well as the peaceful mood. The third movement, in C major, is based on Philippians 4:4, Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, Rejoice! A recurring theme in the form of a minuet, a dance in 3, conveys the feeling of joy in the Lord, and to have complete faith in him.This piece is dedicated to my church family at Severna Park United Methodist Church, who have helped me find myself once again through love and Christ. They have blessed me, so it is only natural that Jesus allows me to give my blessings unto him and unto you.
